There's a possibility this belongs in Videos & Photos, or Computers & Electronics, or even Cars In General, but being a bridging thread I thought I'd stick it in here first.

I want to wire up a small camera in my car to film the road ahead. As far as I can tell I'll need:

Camera
Digital Video Recorder

(the idea being that there's a small camera behind the rear-view mirror, filming the road ahead, wired into a DVR in the glovebox)

Does anyone have any advice on products or entire set-ups which they've used in the past or have experience of, with which to guide me?

ive heard of people doing this, they did it at the nurburgring a lot until it got banned because people were filming crashes and giving the circuit bad press.

Everyone knows that the Ring will kill you if you're careless...

This is just for everyday things.

Trying to catch someone doing something? Like maybe...taking your car places where it shouldn't be going?

Is this just to make a recording of you driving?

Knowing you it's for an experiment! Are you creating a new device that could save hundreds of lives on the roads?

*edit* Oh, and sorry, i don't know of anything that can help you.

I've fabricated a mount with a standard digicam, but nothing recording to a seperate device. Plenty of solutions are available that match your criteria.

Camera!!!

If you are at the home page, you can search for a certain product: left hand side at the bottom (home page).
Typ the word Camera and you will get all the answers you want.

Err..

Thanks and all - but I already KNOW what I need. I'm after advice on specifics.

Like... imagine I need a 21" TV. Pointing me to a site selling TVs isn't helpful. Telling me what 21" TVs you've had in the past, or if you know of a 21" TV review site, IS helpful.

I KNOW I need a 1/3" 480 line CCD bullet camera. I KNOW I need a Personal Video Recorder to plug it into. I'm after opinions and/or reviews from people who've owned or used them before, or advice on what levels of technology I'll need - and if they've had a simialr set-up in their car. PVRs are a mystery to me though.

Why don't you just tape a camcorder to the dash?

1. I don't want tape on my dashboard.

2. I don't want to have a camcorder in my car, obscuring part of my view.

3. I don't want to leave a camcorder in my car.

4. I don't want to lug a camcorder around everywhere I go.

5. I don't want to have to change expensive tapes every hour and a half.

6. Power. A small CCD takes less from the battery than a camcorder.

7... (and so on)

You mean something like this?

Vids are a long wait to download. It's not my setup, but it's a guy I know. :) The USB cord is a 10 foot long extension and connects into his laptop which his friend controls, when he pushes record, it records, and yea. Hope this gives you an idea!

That can get wet and still function flawlessly? I think mounting the cam in car is a better bet... It'll stay clean and protected.

Now THAT'S pleasant... :D

What cam is it? What resolution does it output?

Wow, that's pretty neat.

Famine, what are you planning on doing with this? Knowing you their has to be some motive for doing this that you're not telling us.

Just videoing as I drive. That's all. Really.

dude, those videos do not work AT ALL.

megaupload blows!

could you put it on yousendit or something?

edit: okay, I got one working....but even still, it's not moving at all. the funny part is it says so...yet still only at 3.8kb/sec. I've no clue why anyone would upload to that website.

How about a finding a suction cup that can be fitted with a camera?

I know some guys that do this when they go out onto the tracks.

I dunno, but what I do know is that it's resolution is 800x600. From what I can guess, it's a webcam type thing. I haven't spoken to him in a really long time. I guess it is probably a simple webcam that you use to talk to people. I remember I had a USB webcam once, but I dunno what happened to it. I guess you would need some special software, but it should work. Something that you would find at a major electronics department store. Sorry I couldn' be of further help! 👍

Damn, that guy was flying through Oulton. cool links.

Famine: find a website or catalog in the UK that's dedicated to racing and motorsports supply. In-car cameras are becoming normal equipment even for people who just like track days; there are probably a number of package systems you can buy, either including camcorder or supplying your own. And some units are pretty small both for weight reasons and so they are unobtrusive in the cabin.
