I can't say there is no risk at all, but I would say that if you're not backing up your data to USB you're taking a risk anyway. Furthermore, it's what most of the traders here do so that they don't loose the car/ticket they are sending: Save backup to USB, send stuff, restore backup to PS3.
But don't do it if you don't want to or if you're not confident about it, it's your game, that's true.

I'm just scared incase I lose my save. The save is only a few hundred KB, is this defo the save that backs up my 1,000 cars, paints and credits?? Seems like the 10GB ONE would do that haha
 
The good save is the one that has a few MB. You should back up anyway, just in case your PS3 dies or there is some blackout while the system is saving to disk or something like that. People complaning about losing their game because of corrupted data didn't have a USB drive with a backup to restore :)
