Inconsistent performance

Sometimes I can log onto GTP no problem. It's very fast and all the images load, etc. Other times it is very slow, avatars won't load, certain buttons never appear, etc. Still other times it is inaccessible altogether.

Does anyone have any idea why this is? After a time of the site being so slow it wasn't worth trying, yesterday it started working fine again.

I don't assume it's GTP's fault, or its hardware. But I would like to know how it can be so inconsistent. I don't have this problem with other sites.
 
We haven't been having any server trouble as far as I am aware. As you suspect, it probably has something to do with your connection to our server. Here's what you should do...whenever the site is loading very fast, slow, or not at all, run a trace route to see exactly what path your data is taking to get to the server. To run a trace route in XP, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, "Command Prompt". Once there, type in tracert gtplanet.net and see what comes up. Make a note of which servers have the slowest response times (#ms). If you see them only at times when you have a slow connection with GTP, then you'll know they're the culprit.

On another note, if you're curious, you can go to a website such as http://www.all-nettools.com/ and run a traceroute from there. Just type in gtplanet.net in their Trace Route box and click go. This will run a trace from their servers, which obviously have a solid connection all of the time. So, if GTP is slow for you and you have high ping times, you can check that site to see if it's a universal problem for everyone. That's when it beomes really frustrating, because there isn't really anything that anyone can do about it.
 
Thanks. I'll try that out at home. We use NT here at work, and that's where sometimes I can't get on at all. At home it will just load very slow, but it does load, eventually.
 
sometimes it wont let me log on but i can still go on and other times it get logged of and other times it sends me to random threads (otherwise this is a great site! good job :))

Well, it doesn't look like a network problem. Did anyone else experience slowdowns last night?
 
Yes. Occationally it would not load a page at all and sit spinning for quite a while before it timed out. Other times it would actually load fairly quickly. My guess would be excessive load on your site, or other sites hosted at the same facility. Their internet connection would seem to be overloaded.
