I remember getting lost on aldershot firing range with my dad after watching a rally stage they somehow managed to run on it. Then a few years ago having to walk down a road filled with those traps that close shut to rip your leg off I was on a school hiking trip at the time. Thats how to scare children.

Parents probably did give a stuff, but just trusted the lessons they taught their kids about watching the traffic and not talking to strangers etc.
Nah, my parents only gave a stuff about my sister (and still do)

I was five/six/seven years old and I was out and about on my own for 4-6 hours at a time... how is that right? My daughter is almost 10 and she gets to go out with friends, round the corner for a couple of hours at a time. It's not because I don't trust her, and it's not because I believe there are any more "dodgy characters" about than 30 years ago, I just don't feel it's right to ship a child off out of the house and make them feel like they're in the way if they stay at home.

Back in Grade 2, the school has its own playground. Instead of sand there were small pebbles. Being the easily-amused kid I was, during a recess break I took a handful and drop it down from the top of the slide to let it roll its way down. a few minutes later, 2 classmates come up to me like butthurt policemen and told on me. I get sent to the office and they put me in the staff Walk-in closet for the rest of the school day.

Apparently on that very morning, it was announced that doing such a heinous act spelled automatic suspension. The hell was I suppose to learn from that by sitting in a dinky closet?

I recall from the age of 5 I was pretty much left to my own devices. I was taught to tell the time and would wear a wristwatch so I knew when to go home for lunch and tea. During the warmer months when I was aged 5, 6 and 7 before we moved house, I would spend time out and about on the streets near my home on my bike, with my friends etc. I also used to spend time on the massive field which was round the corner. Once I recall aged around 6 being on the field and watching with awe a young lad on his motorbike. Looking back, I reckon he was probably somewhere between 13 and 16 years old. He stopped next to me and my friend. I asked if he'd let me ride pillion which he duly did :odd: That was a fantastic thrill, but looking back incredibly dangerous and irresponsible - I had never met this person before, I wasn't wearing a crash helmet (although to be fair it was on the grass) and who knows what might've happened. To be quite honest, I always felt like my parents didn't really give a stuff about what I was getting up to anyway, out of sight - out of mind and all that?

I thought I was the first person to think of "free-range children"?!?!

I plan on bringing mine home from the hospital, putting it out back with a bowl of water and some food and then letting him/her into the house when they're able to use the bathroom on their own and can hold a steady job.

That of course will also be the day when they get told they have to move out, and that we'll see them at Christmas and any other holiday. Especially fathers day.

First thing, this

Oh man, where do I start?

was my exact thoughts when I read the title. Anywho..

Discovering my dad's porn, digging for Christmas presents.

The rec center in the military base I lived in took a field trip to a lake where my friend Nathan got pooped on by a bird, while eating KFC. I don't know why I remember that so vividly.

Speaking of the rec center, I would I always be the first one there on Saturdays so I could play all the arcade games for free when the where first turned on.

Having a friend introduce me to Street Fighter II, the whole while thinking, "How are you just gonna skip to 2?!"

I could go on forever.. Captain N, Zombies Ate My Neighbors..man those were the days.

I remember walking into a spiders nest.

It was the most terrifying thing ever.

When I was two on holidays in salou (hey that rhymes) me and my mother were sitting by the pool, then I got up and took 50p from her purse and strolled off to get two big bubblegums, My mother was very suprised to see me come back with 2 bubblegums after not even noticing I was gone!

I remember seeing The Ghost and The Darkness for the first time as a kid and not wanting be around the backyard for a while.

There were lots of trees and bushes there, and I was afraid of going outside and getting eaten by lions.

When I was around 7, my uncle bought me a toy RC Ferrari f40 race car for my birthday but I didn't realise that the antennae was broken so I spent two weeks trying to fix it and then finally gave up when I accidentally dropped it down the stairs. I found it recently whilst cleaning my bedroom and passed it on to my cousin and he looked at me in shock.. I guess it's in my families blood to give away broken toys

I'm sure every kid has done this at some point, but I had to see if the cigarette lighter in the car was ACTUALLY hot, or if it was just some parents' conspiracy to hide something wonderful from me.

At least I used my finger and not my tongue though.

Pokemon battles IRL  Good times.

I remeber when I was at my grandmas house when I was 4 I was being mardy so I went over to my sister and dug my teeth into her arm and but her for about 2 minutes she had a giant scar with teeth marks and the lot!

Kenan and Kel, anyone?

My mom hated this show just because of that April Fool's episode, where Kenan gives a fake lottery ticket to Chris.

This is going to sound weird, but can you elaborate on that story. Like, how did you react? I'm just curious.

Man, I think i was in the sixth grade. Talk about an early Christmas present! Suddenly, I could give a rats ass about Christmas gifts. This was during the days of VHS so, just to be safe, I would always rewind it back to where I found it:sly:. There was an Asian themed one that helped mold me into the man I am today. The wheelbarrow, ftw!

:lol::lol: I probably laughed for a good two minutes after reading those last couple of lines!

I feel jealous now.

I actually managed to convince by brother that his copy of Shadow of the Colossus that he got for his birthday was mine!

Oh and all those hours running around the school playground with friends pretending to be train drivers! :D
edit: - train drivers, dinosaurs or star wars mechs!

A story from my younger days:

I was real young when this happened 4 or 5, but I can still recall the details well. What happened was my family went to a swimming pool complex, one of those places with an Olympic sized pool and some smaller ones for kids. Places for people to set up a picnic blanket, etc.

This place had change rooms, that were split up into a few smaller rooms. People left their clothes in neat piles on the wooden benches. Shoes left on top. I did the same.

So after spending a few hours in the pools. It was time to go so I went back to put my clothes on.

~ Now to explain the big error I was about to make ~ . . . I, in my simple (innocent) young mind, had a completely wrong memory of what clothes I had been wearing.

So I go looking for my clothes, looking and looking. Obviously I could not find them. I soon got the idea in my head that some kids had pulled a prank and messed with the piles of clothes. I found the shirt I was looking for (wrong one) mixed in with a pile of other clothes. So I grabbed that out. Then I found my shorts (wrong again) in another pile. "That's mine, I'll grab it" shortly after that I found the shoes I was looking for on another pile.

Finding the (wrong) clothes was easy thanks to our family's low budget for clothing, all of my clothes were generic EVERYKID brand label. So I was able to find the clothes I was looking for in my size.

Sure that I had sorted out the wrong-doing of these pranksters. I happily left the change rooms fully clothed.

When my brother saw me he was instantly "what are you wearing that for???"

My reply "Huh???"

He then ran though a list of what I had been really wearing. The coin dropped, I ran back into the change rooms, and quickly found my correct pile of clothes totally un-touched. I put my correct clothes on, great . . . which then left me with a pile of random other kid's clothes that I'd pulled from all different places. Ummm.

I kinda tried to find the right original pile's of clothes, honestly. But no good, in the end I just shoved what I had, just anywhere and got away before someone saw me.

Oh, I've got a good one!

I remember when I used to live, well, only a few blocks further than the house I'm in now (which was a somewhat fancy apartment building, which I like at least 3x more than this duplex POS. Anyway...) and I cut school one day; I pretended to leave by opening and closing the door, and then proceeded to hide in the closet. If you're thinking "Was your mom home?" the answer would be yes -- why else would I hide in the damn closet? I sat in that closet fully clothed for 5 or 6 hours straight, and once it hit the time I usually get home (around 3-ish) I waited for her to head to the bathroom, and when she did I quietly crept out of said closet, opened and closed the door again (to give off the perception of me coming home), and then proceeded on as if nothing ever happened.

I should tell her now because she still has no idea that ever happened. As far as she's concerned, I went to school that day.

Playing The Fast and The Furious in 3rd grade. I used to love being the yellow Skyline.

Oh! We used to play demolition derby in Grade 1. Everybody would be running into each other, it was more fun when you played it on a 10 foot high snowhill, until you get pushed off it, and land head first onto pavement. I got a bunch of stitches... and went to school the next day!

Putting all toys of animals or people in the doorway in the light before I went to bed so they didn't wake up and kill me in the night

I rememberer when I was a kid, about 7 years old, going to the cinema to see Jurassic Park (1993). Sitting in the front row seats and the T-Rex scaring the hell out of me
Also the movie Ghost (1990) the noises the ghost things made when they came to take people away in it scared the hell out me :scared:

Questions:
1. You skipped school to sit in the closet all day????
2. How old were you then??

You should tell her, I bet she'd just laugh at you.

1. It was better than going to school, to me, at the time.
2. Early to mid teens. Don't remember the exact age.

If I told her now she likely wouldn't even remember or better yet she'd pretend she knew I was in there all along. Like so many mothers do. :p
