With option to change the display, as some of the latest cars have this now ( Lexus LFA, Ferrari F458 ).Maybe more cars have this function already.I know many race cars, have this. Also many motorbikes, have multi function displays.Could have this as an update, after game release.Nice thing to use or completely useless ?.HUD could auto-off when in cockpit view, with option of off in third person view. This could display everything, not only speedometer & revs.

What i mean is projecting all in car dials & warning instruments as HUD in another view ( third person etc ), not only cockpit view. Some race cars don't have speedometers ( Jag D Type Long Nose ).

Yeah, that would be cool, I think NFS:S has this. I for one just want to turn that ugly thing off tho.

Maybe if there was a oldschool GT1 HUD option ...

:)

Analogue clocks can't change ( Km/h or MPH ) obviously. So could add replacement or aftermarket dials, low oil warning light, water temp, battery level, oil temp, oil pressure, fuel pressure, fuel gauge, boost gauge, handbrake light, generic low washer fluid warning light, engine check light, turbo overboost warning light, warning light for s/charger belt ( if there is one ), cam belt light etc.

Are you talking about these things?

Was just confirming. I couldn't really discern much from the OP.

And yeah, I hope they let us assign a button to switch what these show in cars that have them. Many GT cars allow you to switch between at least 4 screens, so it would be helpful.

Could press the L3 or R3 button to change the page.I wouldn't mind extra analogue/digital dials too, that would be ace.

Is the OP referring to how NFS III (and IV) would display a graphic of the cars actual tachometer in third person view?

Yeah like it did on the PS1.Except with all dials & warning lights etc. Also separate the dials, so they can be zoomed in.

A bit to arcade-like I think. Maybe in the cockpit view itself when the car (like the LFA dash and the ZR1 and Z06 windshield HUD display) allows for the different optional display. But for the other views (chase, bumper cam), the current display of speed/tach, accel/brk etc. in a simple bar across the bottom of the screen keeps everything simple and functional.

The only other requirement is to be able to get rid of the gear suggestion and the timing in the top middle of the screen just like GT4's simple display and also to be able to turn the HUD completely off.

No i don't think so, i reckon it would complement the game well. The dials now in third person, i think are more arcade machine like dials.More complicated yes, but has the arcade machine feel about it.Including when the word START appears. No way do the GT games play similar to arcade games no.I think they should leave that style behind now imo.Other japanese sim games, have that style & they have had for a long time.Fair enough if KY-San wants that style.

Hey what about separating these dials around the screen

It's the same idea as combat flight games.

Let me understand what you're saying:

Here's NFS:SHIFT HUD with Instrument display HUD (in third person view) imitating what's actually in the real car:

And GT5 Prologue which just like GT4 is based on simple bars at the bottom of the screen:

I wouldn't say both are non-arcade looking- the fact that there is a third person view makes it arcade-ish. But of the two, the top is rather ostentatious- do we really need the instrument panels to be replicated? After all, by looking at the back of the car, you already know what you're driving (that may not be the point but still).

On the other hand I do prefer how NFS:SHIFT uses of transparency on the HUD especially the timing and the position on top right and left of the screen.

The thing I like about the way NFS does it which they have done since back in the HP2 days is give each hud its own unique look to mimic the specific cars dials. So like in that picture the TT's dial font and look have been replicated for the hud.

Robin.

I'll put the flame suit on for this, would it be better to lock out third person view in GT mode. What you'll probably have left is roof, hood, bumper & cockpit cam plus more views. In third person view these dials, water temp, oil pressure, fuel gauge, boost gauge, handbrake light etc could restrict peripheral vision. So what PD could do is allow these guages to fade, as liked above. Also could be simplified to be setup as the following e.g. OT 85 deg C, FP 50psi, OP 75psi, revs 8,550rpm, speed 162 mph, gear indicator 6th, 0 to 62 mph 3.5 sec, boost pressure 1.2 bar, battery guage 14v, fuel gauge 1/4 & mpg 15 etc.The speed & revs could be in the middle with the gear indicator, the other guages could be in a box then reappear if a problem occurs or shown at any time.Yes i agree the third person view is more arcade.

If we didn't have cockpit view, maybe. But as it stands, all the cars have modelled interiors and instrument panels, so it would be pretty pointless IMO.

Personal preference: if the HUD was to go analog for the tach, I think it be great if they put the redline at the apex of the tach (on the top), like they do on proper race cars.

Then again, I don't know what view I'll be using once I purchase the game. In GT4 I usually always used the bumper-camera or the third-person-camera, so I'd imagine I stick with those views in GT5. But if I find out that I am handy in GT using the onboard-camera, this entire conversation is moot.

In arcade mode this would work, if you are using third person view. Will give GT5 more authenticity at least. It might prove useful or maybe not.

All things that you say you can do in rFactor, GT5 must to imitate a lot of things of that simulator.

Sorry my english.

Your english is ok, my language writing could prove worse.Yeah i thought of rFactor, after i saw someone driving an E30 M3.It shows all warning lights, similar to a dashboard. It maybe a distasteful idea though, i don't know.I wouldn't mind it.

Only 200+ cars have cockpit view.

Personally i would love to have that kind of hud, unique to each car in bonnet view also, at least it shows me more what i am driving (regarding Standard cars)

I wish some things in the cockpit would work. This was, what I was missing in GT5P... The fuelmeter (what´s it´s name in english? :D) does not move (ok there was no fuel in prologue). also the esp (traction control) does not work, when it gets activated... little details... If we get 200 cockpits, this would be no big thing to implement...

Yeah and I also wish we can turn the HUD off...

EDIT: Ahhhh the most important thing I forgot, that would be soo perfect if the KM/Miles in the cockpit would really show the distance you´ve driven with that car. And it must stay so and don´t get nulled, zero (0000000) again if you take a ride on an new track...

I wish we could get a hud, of the real dials/gauges for at least premium cars.As they are all there to see.Plus some are functional too, like multi function displays in race cars. That to me is adding more professional touches to it.

Why are people so hung up on the 'arcade' issue with the GT series? If you consider a representation of the car's tacho to be arcade, then so is a lap counter, split time and lap time display on the HUD. VBox data logger can be skinned with graphics and I've seen one image of it having been skinned with the real car's tacho, so it's not an 'arcade' feature at all.

I'd rather have a functional, decent-looking uniform HUD. Morphing the HUD to the style of the car would result in diminished usability and would have questionable aesthetic benefit.
