I can listen to cheezy drum beats and simple background stuff all day long. I listen to a lot of odd (and not so odd) older electronic music, so I find it a pity that there isn't a lot of instrumental stuff on the radio. How often do you hear naythig without words on the radio or MTV, in fact? Almost never.
It's all about the music. Words are interchangeable. A song doesn't need it. Any good band or artist has at least one instruemntal song per release, a song that invites you in to experience the music as language unto itself (unfortunately a lot of people call it "boring" and "repetitious"). The prevalent notion that the music is merely a prop for some guy's boasting, half baked opining, or personal problems, is disappointing.
I say what I say about classical and jazz because they are too obvious.
Listen mainly to guitarists in the Instrumental area eg. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai etc
also there are some great, IMO, tracks i have as well such as Sting of the Bumblebee (ManoWar), Call of Ktulu (Metallica)

Yeah, a lot of the stuff I listen to is instrumental, or uses vocals in an instrumental way. Stuff like BT, Paul van Dyk, Sabres of Paradise, Jean-Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield.
Those artists cover a real spectrum, but it's all good!
I like guitar stuff.
To mellow things out I like "Acoustic Alchemy", "Spyro Gyra", and anythng instrumental by SRV.
There are others, but they are too numerous to name.
When I'm feeling instrumental, I go for Man... or Astroman?. They're 90% instrumental, with the 'vocals' mostly being voicetrack clips from old science fiction movies.
FSOL (Future sound of London) are sort of instrumental.
Im not sure what kind of music it is though, I think it is trance. At the moment im listening to F.S.O.L- papua new guinea (hybrid mix).
The Japanese OST's for Gran Turismo 1,2,3 have very nice Rock/Jazz instrumentals, by Masahiro Ando and Isamu Ohira I think.

We seem to have an overlap in musical taste. I don't own anything by them but have heard a lot of it and liked it.
Another one along those lines is a band called The James Taylor Quartet (no not the James Taylor). They change a lot but their album called Mission Impossible is instrumental versions of old rock songs like Mrs Robinson, James Bond Themes (hence the album title) and more obscure stuff. It's pretty raw sounding with no overdubbing.
Just as good. Cocteau Twins' singer Elizabeth Frazier does this. I once read some comical sex survey that asked what kind of music you liten to to do the deed; Cocteau Twins was choice "A."

as for this, I listen to a lot of anime and game OSTS and also a lot of electro AND jazz... that thing about ZZZzzzZZ and etc is stupid... also, I find minimal very pleasing. I also like those guitar masturbation stuff but lately its been boring. I prefer a complete band rather than a solely tlented guy backed up by any guy with a battery and a bass.
I never said I dislike it. It is old, that is all. Old. Old is not necessarily bad, just old. New music is being produced that is on par with Mozart, Davis, etc. It just hasn't had enough time to drape itself in a mantle of snobbery.
