Which Do You Prefer?​

When it comes to speaking out and interacting, many of us are shy in public, and more open on the internet. I'm doing this poll just for a general survey (and I might use the results for a school project). Don't worry, all your results are anonymous and you will not be forced to publicize your answer.

You have 3 choices in the poll:

  1. Internet - I Can Definitely Express Myself Better In A Forum
  2. Real Life - Emoticons And Bold Text Just Don't Do It For Me
  3. Impartial - I Feel I Can Express Myself Equally In Both Environments

Your objective here is to decide where you think you are more open and outspoken: Real Life, The Internet, Or Both Equally. Are you just not the kind of person who can talk out in front of a crowd or another person? Internet is probably your best choice. Do you think that you are much better speaking than typing? Real Life is probably your selection. Do you feel that, in either situation, you can express yourself equally? Choose Impartial.

I, personally, feel I am Impartial. I can express myself pretty well in real life as well as on the internet. The only advantage I see of having a discussion over the internet is that you can't be directly interrupted (especially in a forum). Plus, people can go over your previous statements without completely forgetting about them. On the other hand, you can use body language, facial expressions, and tones of voice to show how you really feel.

So, where are you more comfortable discussing things or speaking out?

Real life. I find a lot of things are ambiguous on the internet because many emotions cannot be expressed with text. Even with the help of smilies, it does not always work
 
in person over even the phone is preferred to internet for me. The depth of emotion you can get by voice and non-verbal communication is far superior to typing.
 
I can express myself fine in person, but people don't always hear me the first time or they just can't wrap their fragile minds around my erudite words.
 
Usually either is ok, but I am more shy with most girls in real life, and would never think to talk to some asian teenage gangster like Edwin, or a fat hockey-playing lesbian like Famine :p
 
Oh, yeah, I'm obviously far more reserved (serious) in public than I am on the intarweb. I'll vote for the series of tubes, just for the hell of it, even though I'm a people person (albeit I get flustered/blushy a lot).
 
I don't care either way, but what TS said is true, the good comebacks only happen on the 'net. If you wanted a good comeback in reality you'd have to start scraping the back of someones throat. :lol:
 
Without a doubt real life. Because on the phone or online, if there's ever any silence or lack of IMing, there's nothing. But if you're with the person, at least you can just enjoy the moment together.

And in person, it's a lot easier to convey what you really mean, and there's a lot less up for confusion.
 
I'm impartial. Although I often take my time with particularly important and/or long posts -- making sure everything is as I want it to be, and sometimes looking up any words I'm not 100% sure on at Dictionary.com, to make my post as effective as I can make it -- I don't seem to have much trouble formulating, stating, and defending arguments on-the-fly in the real world.

I occasionally trip up on words when speaking (every now and then I'll have a day where it just happens all day long), and I sometimes wish I could pull a Ctrl-T in Firefox to look up some information when engaged in a real-world debate :lol: , but there are also times on the internet when it seems like my debate "opponent" can't seem to read or comprehend anything I'm writing, despite the fact that it seems very clear and understandable to me. :confused:

I find that using a lot of bolded, italicized, and underlined text, along with the appropriate smilies, can help you get your point across online, and I avoid making myself look stupid in the real world by avoiding topics that I know very little about, or admitting what I don't know.

As for whether or not I'm "outspoken," that depends on the forum or the real-world situation. I do like to stir up trouble now and then, but strangely enough, I tend to do so when speaking to a larger group online, and, conversely, when speaking to a smaller group in the real-world. I don't really know why.
 
I can definitely express myself much better in person. I am a very auditory person and I have a much easier time conversing with someone when we are talking rather than typing. I spend too much time thinking about things when I'm typing, but I'm much more natural when I'm speaking.
 
I'm completely unnatural when talking in real life, especially to people I really don't know. I'm like Shaq or Dikembe Mutombo, except I'm just shy.

That makes so little sense that I think I'm going to leave it.

I'll second that. I think I'm just as disappointing in real life as I am on these boards :D

I'm impartial to either. They each have pros and cons. Well, there are more cons on the Internet than anywhere else. Turns out "Mary" was actually a 37 year-old man :scared:

Impartial. I am shyer in real life, without doubt, but I do express myself better in many ways.

On the internet, I talk more freely and be a little more "silly", if you know what I mean. You really don't get to see the proper me by typing...
 
I’m generally a little more reserved in real life (though not as much, these days). But I feel as though there is no real difference in either medium – you just have to approach them differently.

However, I’ll definatly spend more time thinking about the consequences of what I say in real life. :lol:
 
I'm can be more open with people I've just met on the internet than someone I've just met in person depending on the circumstances. I can get to know a friend of a friend quite fast, I've met people and 20 mins later felt like I've known them years, on the other hand I've met people and said little more than hello, it depends on the person I'm talking to and the circumstances of our meeting I guess. But when it comes to conversing and expressing things with people I know I'm far more expressive in person.
