I almost never use the internet at home. I sit at a desk all day and try to look busy, like right now, furiously typing away. So I get my emails and know when somebody's posted and check it out, bla bla. I have to say GTP has smoothed out my work days a lot and, when it's dead, Yahoo Games fills in. And I also do any research I need to do, i.e. products, etc., all at work. Once I'm home at night it's like there is no such thing as the internet.

But I've noticed a few other people who seem to be on here all day, too. And I'm wondering, where the heck are ya? Do that many people really sit at home on the computer all day? No work? No school? I'm envious.

How much time do you spend on the internet (not just GTP) and where do you do it?

I use the internet at home and at work, where I'm permanently connected in both sites. I sit in our 'hub' site, which has the internet pipe on its LAN, so I get a large slice of the 4Mb bandwidth.

At work, I have three machines on my desk, and I'm able to flick betweeen them at will. One usually has a GTP window up, and it's easy to hit F5 and respond to anything that's happening. My boss doesn't mind because it doesn't really affect my work rate.

While I not as lucky as GG, I do have two computers sitting on my desk. Each one having access to a 384k DSL line.

I have no internet access at home, and that's due to user preference. I don't have cable and rarely watch TV.

BUt while at work, I do tend to get stressed out, and a short stint at GTP always helps.

Yeah, what AO said. I too do most of my posting from work, between and during actual work-related tasks.

I'm on dialuo at home, and I do post from there. But typically if I have a largish block of time available, I play GT3 instead of writing about it. I use GTPlanet kind of like methadone, to help me through those bouts of withdrawal during the workday. I do post at home when my wife and/or kids have the PS2 occupied.

I do most of my posting from home, where I use the iBook's built-in 56k (it's faster than my desktop's cheapie modem...)

From school, I only come on between 11:45 and 12:15 PST (like right now! :D), since it's Computer Applications class. Dunno what they have here... I think it's a T1 connection, but I'm not sure. Whatever it is, it's pretty darn fast, so long as a site's server doesn't lock up! :p

I have to do most of my Internet work at home though... the school filter blocks out all free sites and all free web services (including email), so I can't check my email until I get home. I'm actually lucky that GTP isn't filtered out, since they have successfully filtered out many message boards/chat rooms.

Wow. Another GTPer with a wife. I thought I was the only one ;) And my first kid to arrive in the first week of March  Funny, I didn't even get into video games until less than a year ago. I'm a late bloomer I guess.

But an interesting thing that is coming out in this thread is people's connection speeds. I should've included that, too. I have a cable modem. Couldn't live without it now. When I hear 56k I crumple into a fetal position and tremble. At work I have T1. Usually cable is faster.

Actually milefile, there's quite a few of us here who are married. Even a few who have been in committed relationships that are older than some of the young posters.

I made the switch 2 years ago (when had roommate, before married) from 56k to cable, and I'll never go back. I'd rather not have a computer than have one running at 56k. :) As it is, I still get impatient with the 384k DSL.

I really don't have any other option - I do everything at home, usually between 4-7 PM, and 8-11 PM (if I'm lucky). But, honestly, I must confess I have no idea where that time goes, and it seems like it is very hard to get anything done! After being starved with a 56k for over 4 years, I've got a cable modem that averages around 2 megabits per second. I love my computer, so it's great to finally have a connection that allows me to get more work out it during my online time.

Like, what do you do all day?

I only access it from home - I go to work because I've got work-related stuff to do, not so I can access the Planet.

I go to work because they pay me.

That is a big part of it - probably the biggest. And that if I didn't, they'd take away the house and the Audi.

i usually check a post or two on the GTF before i go to school, then i surf on and off all night until i go to bed, between TV and vice city.

I get Online in the morning before I go to school. (6:55-7:20)
And when I get home I'm online ALL day (well, almost) ( 2:10- 10:30) :D

I'm usually online for about an hour per day after school. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

Unfortunately our school's internet has this site blocked off. So I usually just play games on Yahoo when I'm bored in school.

Heh heh, and I thought that my school's filter was strict... :p ;) Do you have all free websites blocked off too? (As in Geocities sites, tripod sites, etc.)

Yeah, they didn't...until some kid made a site on Tripod full of porn, and was looking at it school. Come to think about it, I haven't seen that kid since that incident in 9th grade, they probably expelled him or something stupid like that.

Ouchies.

Anyway, the filtering system at our school is really strict... in the computer lab, whenever I turn around, there is always someone, somewhere running into the filter notice. I can't even access macupdate.com, because it's listed under "Chats and email", although oddly enough, VersionTracker isn't filtered. :thatsodd:

If I could I would access GTPlanet from school I mean they are computers in class just I can't use them because I have NO time. :(

Maybe about an hour or two before work, maybe an hour here and there every other night.

48-56K, if I'm lucky. Sometimes I get 15-30 minutes at work to be online, but the ISDN line is shared by many other people. So I may get something about as close to 56k if I'm lucky at work.

I was fortunate at school months ago, T3 all the way, baby! And a T1 at work was nice too. But I earn more, so it's a trade-off.

I hardly ever acces GTPlanet from school, I usually get online after school if I have time.
