A friend of mine just told me today that you can join a someone online in your PSN friends list by going to their lounge. I thought that the lounge was only if you were hosting a private race, but apparently it will take someone to wherever you are racing online.
It's not quite an invite feature, but it sure beats typing in a 20 digit room number!
