**iPad**

It's the latest product (Tablet PC) that Apple has managed to get the whole world crazed about. You could call it an oversize iPhone to make things simple. Same form factor, 'home button', touchsceen etc. But unlike the iPhone there is NO camera.

Pros
  • App Store - Just like the iPhone, zillions of apps
  • HTML5 - supposed to be the next generation of web browsing.
  • Cheapest iPad is US$500
  • 10 hours of veiwing videos
  • Up to one month of standy battery
  • Slim & Light - Very thin and weighs only 1.5 pounds
  • Digital Compass
  • 3G assisted GPS
  • Accelerometer

Cons
  • No multitasking - no running more than one app at a time. (at least not untill os 4.0 is released)
  • No flash support - 🤬?
  • Cheapest iPad has no 3G, only Wi-Fi
  • Built in battery
  • No Camera - 🤬?
  • The name? - reminds some people of something females only use.

Giant pile of fail. It is just a big iPod touch. No USB, no Flash or Java, no real multi-tasking, and limited support for iPhone apps. Oh and no Webcam.

Steve sure likes adjectives that make things sound amazing. It is just a big iPod touch with 3G, and yet he tries to make it sound amazing and new. Sounds like I am listening to a sorority girl "Its awesome at, like, pictures, and like, TV you'll be blown away." You can tell they are struggling for actual new stuff when they spend 15 seconds talking about Wallpapers like they are new and amazing.

It is just Apple desperately wanting in on the Netbook market and being amazingly lazy

Cody pretty much said anything I was going to say about it. I expected their press conference, to be a bit more amazing to be honest. I was really hoping they were going to be releasing the next generation of the iPhone.

Don't really care about the big touchscreen flat thing, but I am liking the look of iPhone OS 3.2. Well I like the AMAZING IDEA of having a proper wallpaper, but whether or not that'll materialise for the iPhone or not I'm not sure.

After I saw him pick up the iPad I couldn't help it but instantaneously laugh. You might as well just bring a netbook or laptop around anyways. You would get far more for the buck rather then pay $499 for the iPad.

Totally missing the point. Apple don't want to target the netbook market (mostly, I suspect, because the profit margins are significantly reduced), so this is their way of compensating - a big shiny 'user experience' in a small package with a sizable price tag. Nobody will buy it for any reason other than how it feels to use, which I'm told by Mr Fry is delightful.

Asus, Acer, Samsung etc shouldn't be in too much danger - they make cheaper and more useful products that manage to stand up on a desk on their own. Neither should Amazon or Barnes & Noble in my opinion as it's not e-ink, meaning you'll get blasted with bright light in bed and you won't be able to see it on a sunny day.

I don’t know why anybody expected this to be targeted towards people like us (I actually had a slap bet with my apartmentmate that it was definitely going to be iPhone OS-based – I won, of course). Think of your parents, and how they probably do nothing with their computers except read email and browse the web. This is perfect for them. (Not that I’m saying everybody’s parents are like that, of course, but I can guarantee that a huge percentage of them are.) I mean, seriously, this is all the computer that my mom needs. Or people who have a primary desktop that they work at, and just want something like this that they can keep in the living room for casual browsing and media consumption (i.e., without having to unhook a laptop from all of its cables each time).

I actually am sorta-kinda considering it, only because this paired with Jaadu might turn it into something feasible for the occasional more complicated task. But I’m more likely to just get a new MB.

Probably would have been a day-one purchase if only they had supported Flash. It was marginally acceptable on my phone, because it's a phone, but not for this. I want a tablet as an internet appliance, and if it can't do that, then it's worthless.

Well the image was bound to appear sooner or later but here is a pic of the Apple design team hard at work designing the IPad.

Was this some sort of sick joke from Steve Jobs himself? they should have never released this, they should have waited another 8-10 months and release something that does quite suck as much. But they might release one that cost half as much and is 2 times better in a month or two. who knows. Overall: ipad=fail

Pretty sure Jobs mentioned Netbooks in the keynote, which were trying to fill this void that this iPad has now done.

The thing will sell like crazy, but it's totally unappealing.

They're trying to sell this as a handheld computer, but it can't even multitask?
You've got the kinda cool looking iWork suite, but you can't put documents on USB without buying a separate adapter? (I assume printing too, if you can print?)
It's a complete web browsing experience, but you can't use Flash?

Judging by the size of it too, it would be too awkward to type using thumbs like you would on the iPhone, so you're pretty much forced to lay it flat to type. At which point you might as well by a 10" Netbook, which has a Real OS, a keyboard and is not much larger.

The worst thing is, in 12 months time, they'll release an iPad S, which will have a front and rear facing camera and a few other 'groundbreaking' things. And suckers will buy that too.

And for those who say that it's not targeted at "Techies", it's just for people who want to browse the web. Uninstall Flash on your Computer and see how fun it is. Every major news site on the internet has major amounts of Flash content. See how long before your parents are calling you asking why they can't access the videos on cnn.com

After using my iPhone for a bit, I was amazed buy how intuitive it was to use it. It did so many things a lot better than other smartphones that I could forgive some of its 'lesser' features.

Same for my MBP with OSX 10.6. It has many features that make me favor it over a Windows notebook any day. And it has none of the drawbacks that an iPhone has (e.g. closed platform, no Flash/Java/etc.).

But now comes this, and my first reaction is: 'Meh'. I understand that I may not be the target audience they are after, but to me, this is just a big iPod Touch. Obviously they're not aiming at the 'netbook replacement' market segment, but what the hell is it then? I think the size is excellent, since you can now read documents, websites and emails at proper size. So it's good as an e-reader alternative that can run apps/games, but for that purpose it's rather expensive. It's sort of mobile, but it's not a replacement for my phone, so I have to carry around both. So, is it good for browsing/gaming/etc. while you're sitting on the couch? Maybe, but I already have an MBP lying around that comes out of hibernation and has a network connection in under 5 seconds.

For now, I just can't come up with an excuse to buy one of these. And believe me, for every new gadget there is I can make up excuses to the missus as to why I simply can't live without it. :p)

But then again, most people were cynical about the iPod and iPhone at launch, so maybe I should just wait a bit until it's available and give it a try at the local store. And I think Casio is probably right, they probably will release a souped up version after summer, just like they did with iPhone.

Yeah, I think Windows 7 pretty much got rid of any reason to consider Apple products. That's totally why they're now a "mobile devices company".

I kind of laughed when I saw the keynote and the part at the end when they introduced a stand. My first thought when I saw it was, "Wow, that's kind of boring... but I bet it would make a great picture frame." Sure enough, Jobs introduces the dock and talks about how you can make it an awesome picture frame.

Anything important that this thing can do, my iphone can also do. Actually, I wish they build a phone into it. That would be freakin sweet to hold to your ear.

I'm sure Apple is all pleased with itself for the way that people fall over themselves to gush about the products. And for non-technical people who don't (or won't) see the limitations, their products are fine.

But for people who want their devices to work properly, don't want to worsip at the Altar of Steve, just want products that work and work well, this isn't really cutting it.

I guess all these mobile devices are fine, they're just not for me.

First of all iPad sounds a like female sanitary product. Second as most people have said it's just a larger more cumbersome iPhone. If you're on a train or sitting down without a desk it's going to be a pain to hold. At least with a netbook you can have it on your lap and adjust the screen to suit your viewing angle. Touch screen is all very well but if you actually want to write something of substantial length your going to have sore fingertips.

Overall a gimmicky product and has plenty of better cheaper alternatives. You knew before it was released that there is going to be at least another four generations of this product which will mainly be the same apart from the features they chose to leave out in the previous version.

I have the same problem Lars... I love gadgets and also think of anything and everything to tell my GF why I need it :)

Anyways, about this iPAD... I was very interested in it after reading about it and all the "hype" around it. But when I saw it on the news this morning I was also having mixed feeling about it. I have an iPhone 3GS at the moment which I am very happy with and enjoy using. Now that its jailbroken its even more fun to use, but Im not sure I will look into buying one of these. Atleast not til I have seen it in RL or tried it out somewhere. But as others have mentioned I am going to sit back and wait for a while and see how things develop. Maybe new versions will come out which are better and have the features it's missing now.

I also dont get why Apple dont support Flash on the iPhone and now the iPad? Are there legal issues? Or are they just boycotting them? All the restrictions that are attached with Apple mobile products is what led me to eventually jailbreak the iPhone, only jailbreaking does not bring in Flash support I believe. If all those restrictions werent there, I wouldnt have been so tempted to jailbreak... But Im drifting a bit off topic here so I'll quit while im ahead. Still not sure what to make of the iPad just yet...

Don't you know that Obama was talking about Steve when blathering about the need for Jobs in America?

First thing to come to my mind was this MadTv spoof that was years ahead of its time....

I thought it was a real poor effort by Apple, although the hype didnt help they delivered the bare minium people were expecting which was literally an oversized ipod touch.

Steve Jobs obviously sees a gap in a market that no one else thinks exsist! Smartphones and Netbooks dont need something in the middle and seeing as many people already have advanced mobile phones this seems like another thing to carry round which is kinda pointless, especially when its this crippled.

No card slots, no USB port, no webcam, no 3G standard, no full OSX, heavy, ugly thick bezel, no flash support, no handwriting recognition, no multitasking, blown up pixelated apps, odd non standard screen size (16:9 will have black bars), so so processor speed... these are pretty major things to miss out on in my mind. All these things can be done for cheaper on a netbook. Even the iPhone is a better deal because you get 3G for cheaper so your paying quite a bit more for a larger screen and a slight speed boost.

Looking at the competion they really have nothing to worry about, seeing HP's tablet a few weeks ago they are offering something which looks very similar but has these simple things Apple have missed plus it runs a full OS. There are going to be tons of tablets released now which will just be netbooks without keyboards and will be priced just as resonably as they are now.

Apple had a great opportunity to really create something innovative but it really does fall short. It does have that Apple styling that makes you want it but this time the failings are so huge that spending $499 for it is not justified. Maybe the 2nd generation model (if it lasts that long) might offer more.

Robin.

Pretty sure Jobs mentioned Netbooks in the keynote, which were trying to fill this void that this iPad has now done.

Perhaps I should have phrased that differently. Apple don't want to target the netbook market by making a 'traditional' netbook. Too many features (like, say, a USB port...) and it'd be eating into the Air and MacBook's market shares. But, by selling this...thing, they've stopped that by simply producing something that doesn't really do anything that an iPhone won't.

I'm quite sure that a few years from now it will have changed the game in the same way the iPod or iPhone did. The possibilities are endless.

People are just too stuck in an old way of thinking.

I assume after you jailbreak it it will be ok... But standard without USB, Flash support, no standard 3G, camera and many more things it lacks. I just dont see the point of it... If they would have just opted to put a full OS on it instead of the iPhone/iPod OS I think it would have been a whole lot better... but now youre just restricted like with a normal iPhone. Also an iPhone 3GS would make more sense anyway... I mean you can't just shove this thing into your pocket and take it with you to use on the move.... For that you'd need WiFi as well which is not everywhere yet in Holland. So to pay that much for a bit of extra screen and some extra speed is also pointless in my eyes... I do feel that later versions will be better though, like they did with the iPhone....

The only thing is that it's nothing new, tablet's have been around for a long time and also have all the capabilities of your average laptop(Including USB ports:eek:). This does not, I don't see it being more than a niche product similar to what Apple TV is.

I don't get it. I still cannot figure out who is supposed to want one of these. It offers no advantages over a netbook. Price? No. Size? No. Ease of use? No.

If the idea was to cater to people who are too computer illiterate to figure out how to use a computer for anything, make a netbook without a meaningful OS. The whole tablet thing is a joke.

I'm sorry, this is out of place. I've been a Mac user for a while and stuff, but seriously now.

**** Apple.

Who is supposed to want to buy 4 iPhones taped together? It's still got all that crap with the app store and only having approved apps and stuff. Seriously, this thing is a piece of ****. Shame it will be showing up in coffee shops everywhere though. It has an Apple logo, people will buy it.

Also, I love how the SDK has been released. Nothing like getting your apps rejected before the goddamn iPad even hits the market.

It's not a computer. It's a media device with benefits. It does not replace a laptop or a telephone. Unlike computers it is a consumer product. You only have to turn it on and it's instantly ready. You can surf the web within a second. You can watch the olympic games or a movie on the commuter train without having to turn on your laptop or netbook and then wait for 3 minutes while the OS loads. It does not do everything out of the box but what it does it does well and fast. Consider the AppStore which in 18 months have gone from zero to 140 000 apps that have been downloaded 3 billion times. Then imagine what developers can do with this device with it's much larger screen and much faster processor. It will be the Apps that does thing we haven't even thouht of yet that will make this device the game changer. Right now it's just OK. Apple could well have made a tablet computer with a fullgrown MacOS but whats the point. Tablets have been around for ages and no one wants them and even if Apple were successful where other have failed they would just cannibalize the sales of their MacBook range. This is a consumer product to be used when you don't need a computer and when the iPhone is lacking. In a few years time it could also well be the device that killed the PSP.

Yes, it does not multitask... yet. The thing is that iPhoneOS 4.0 is just around the corner and just as with the iPhone new features are just a free update away. Yes, it should have had a front facing camera but Apple is not in the game to save the world, they want to make money just like MS, just like HP and just like Nokia. The camera will come. And no, there's no point in adding flash, which is an obsolete proprietary power drainer, when there's already an open standard to replace it. The sooner flash disappears the better.

Still don't get it. You can't watch a movie on this thing - you'd have to hold it up the whole time (unless you buy a special stand that incareases the bulk and weight). From standby, your netbook will load up with the same speed as this tablet, stands on its own, but it isn't limited to 140,000 apps from the itunes store. You have an entire internet full of applications you can run. Everything under the sun - and just imagine what developers will do for windows and mac OS users in the future!

Point is, this thing fails in every way possible. I do not see a market for it whatsoever. I have yet to think of a single person for whom this would be a smart buy. If it had other features, I could see some companies benefiting from employees using tablets - but I highly doubt that the apple cost model works for them.

Shame it will be showing up in coffee shops everywhere though.

I sincerely hope it does, because that sight would be hilarious. I'd love to see everyone in Starbucks attempting to use these $500 lumps of slate without a) looking like morons, and b) dropping them on the tiled floor.

What's a shame is that Apple didn't just give in and produce something for that price that was conceivably useful. My MacBook's on the way out, but I don't need a notebook with raw processing power or even a CD drive anymore - I'd snap up a 10 or 12 inch Apple Netbook in seconds if they made one available.

I can think of one use - retail. It'd be a great way of showing customers info about various products via photos, web or video. I mean it'd be an expensive hammer with which to crack a nut, but still.
