The same wheel they reinvented with the iPod and the iPhone.
You know, one of these days Steve Jobs is going to show off an iron lung (iRon Lung?) and people are going to say that Apple has reinvented breathing.

Might be worth reading Stephen Fry's latest blog entry:
http://www.stephenfry.com/2010/01/28/ipad-about/

He was at the keynote and has had a play with one. Admittedly he goes a little fanboyish much to my annoyance, but it's worth a look nonetheless.

I read his article and I was suprised that he was so into tech, but he came across as such an Apple fanboy and products just like the iPad were invented for people like him. People who don't do the more traditional business type jobs and just want something fancy to play with for the sake of it. Im glad he has the money to splash around!

By contast here are Paul Thurrott's responces and that guy is such a MS fanboy is unbelievable but he does make some valid points, most of which have been the reasoning behind the launches negativity.

Just lost my respect for Stuff magazine.

Stuff
And the iPad is a netbook-slayer, too

No it's not.

because you can touch and interact with web pages

And that's better in some way is it?

the browsing experience on the iPad is peerless. It's not just better than the iPhone - it's better than the iMac and every other computer out there.

That quote is what annoyed me immensely. I'd love to pop round to their office and relieve the author of his Mac Pro to see how long he copes without Flash.

Indeed he is. I seem to recall he had about 5 iPhones on the go at once during that Last Chance to See programme he did. Not quite sure why, but there we are.

How exactly is it a netbook killer if you can't even write a word document than print it off?

At least that explains why I've never read Stuff.

Well After hearing about its relase and seeing a few videos on it, its dumb. I think Apple should have put money elsewhere. Im still buying a macbook this month, but not an iPad....

If it were actually running Windows 7, yes. But this is just remote computing. It makes it a viable addition to your work desktop, but lose your 3G signal and no more Windows 7.

Which is why it's only being sold in bulk to businesses with no intention of making a public version, I'd imagine. Still, it's an interesting start until someone comes up with a more viable option.

Well, in the comments someone mentioned a VNC app for iPhone. VNC is what we use at work, so if that app will work well on the iPad it would be viable for us. It wouldn't make me buy an iPad though, since I can check out laptops when I am going to be out of the office for an extended time.

I cannot understand why they didn't put in a Compact Flash slot and a scaled down OSX, then it would be absolutely perfect for media types who work to a deadline.

Because it would probably have decimated MacBook sales.

So they created a product that won't sell on purpose?

I think saying it would take away from Macbook sales isn't exactly true. Sure it would take some away but not that many. Just look at Netbooks, sure they have bitten into the laptop market but they haven't completely taken over laptops.

The purposes are different enough for the products to exist together. It would make so much sense if this could run proper Mac Apps though and not silly iPhone/iPod ones.

For example imagine how useful it would be to photographers working to a deadline if you could run Photoshop Lightroom on it. It already has most requirements of that task going for it over a Netbook, such as better battery life, a very high quality screen and weight.

Apple are definitely onto something here, they just need to make it more of a Tablet PC instead of a big iPod Touch.

IF it was a netbook with a touch screen, and scaled down OSX, that would be gold. but it's not. so I'll stick with my iMac and my iPod touch.

Duh.

Logically it shouldn't sell (and it wouldn't if it had 'Dell' stamped on the back), but it will. This is what Apple do best - they create a device you don't need to buy, and then go about trying to put you off buying it with a huge price tag. And then of course you buy one, followed by another when you inevitably drop it and the screen breaks.

Apple are definitely onto something here, they just need to make it more of a Tablet PC instead of a big iPod Touch.

...but they won't, because it'll inconveniently steal sales from the equally pointless but considerably more expensive MacBook Air. And that's something they can't afford to do, as I'm relatively certain only 3 people worldwide ever bought one.

And anyway, Apple don't work like that. I can't think of an Apple device launched in the last 10 years that hasn't been under equipped in some way. ÂŁ1800 MacBook Pros still only have 2 USB ports, the iPhone has had Bluetooth for nearly 3 years but still can't sync or send files over it, and I don't think any Apple device had a memory card slot up until last year's MacBook update. Apple are one of the most calculating companies around, and if something is missing, it's missing for a reason. Unfortunately it's usually one involving their business model.

Agreed, I'd completely forgot about the Air. To be fair though if people were going to buy an Air they would of done it by now, Apple need to let that move on and let the iPad serve a genuinely useful purpose, at the moment it's nothing more than a joke and the only buyers will be of similar status to those who bought the Air, rich idiots.

What a completely worthless pile.

Personally (and as usual) I think Charlie Brooker got it about right.

Language warning for the naughtily worded title.

These ridiculous lists about what the iPad doesn't have a really getting on my nerves now, a camera - oooh, who ever uses a built in camera? Nobody. 16:9 Video, so what, majority of Laptops use 16:10 and they've never been hassled. E-Ink? WTF! Reading books won't be hard on your eyes as your looking at the best LCD tech around, IPS panels aren't found in any Notebooks and very few Laptops, excluding Apple's Macbooks.

When will they learn that it isn't cool to hate Apple? It's petty and pathetic.

On those points, you're absolutely right. But on the flip side, those are the minor issues with the Pad.

So is defending an inferior product to the death.

The main issue has been stated by everyone already I think, no Flash support has really dented the iPad from the start, now because reviewers have exhausted that point they feel the need to come up with stupid lists.

I'm not defending it, if that's what your getting at. It's a pointless product as it stands and I've stated previously how I feel it could be better, but even then I wouldn't buy it. However I've not actually seen anyone but Jobs defend it, everyone is firmly on the hate train at the moment. I just wish people would get over it, they aren't forced to buy it.

If this came with a version of Mac OSX on it, you would be able to get your trendy idiot stripes for considerably less than half of the price of the lowest spec Mac laptop. Yes it would be considerably more limited, but that wouldn't matter to most of the people who would buy it just to buy into the brand.

16:9 Video, so what, majority of Laptops use 16:10 and they've never been hassled.
16:10 is also a widescreen video resolution. 4:3, no matter how you look at it, is not.

There is a limit to the arrogance the public at large is willing to put up with. Based on Apple's overall actions of the past half-decade or so, I'd say that all of the current hate and more is easily justified; and Steve Jobs strolling out onto a podium and spouting BS along the lines of "the Netbook is dead" is more than enough reason to push things past the breaking point.

It's really kind of crazy to see the vitriol that this device is causing.

Like what? Just curious.

For starters:

That wasn't a joke. Read the entire paragraph of the section you quoted from post #83.

That's really it? An advertising campaign based on trying to convince people that their system is actually more user friendly and intuitive than what's been the only option for most of the past decade and a half?

Maybe it's arrogant, but it's certainly not any more arrogant than the way Microsoft has been running its business.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that the ipad will be a resounding success.

Also, the reason for the 4:3 screen is that it requires more of a compromise to show textbooks on a 16:9 screen than it is to watch video on a 4:3. The reason for the fat bezel is so that you have somewhere to put your hands when you're holding it without covering the text or picture.
