I got a 4th gen iPod touch about four days ago. It's absolutely brillant, but the battery life is awful. This obviously is an error and in my belief, it's simply a bad batch that was rushed off the production line so it would be released on time.

I'll give you an example:
Today, I woke up and charged it from 40% or so to a full 100% charged-symbol-etc charge. I listened to music (no other use, just listening) for half an hour riding in a car. After that, 10 minutes playing Hoggy (not processor intensive in any way whatsoever), and no more. No volume. About four hours later (keep in mind, no wifi throughout the day), I listened to music again. five minutes in, the battery died completely. 👎

Like I said, this doesn't happen with all of the new touches. Apparently just a few are affected, but mine is especially bad. I'm going to the apple store to get it replaced once the new Belkin cases come out, and I'll fill you in after that. If it ends the same way, I'll go back again, etc. I paid a premium for this device - it should work. And so should yours.

Keep in mind, this thread isn't meant to be a rant, but a warning.

It's broken no doubt. Despite what others say I think the battery on the Iphone is brilliant and far superior to the Nokia I had before and that doesn't tally with your experiences.

Only thing to ask is have you done a full empty, full charge?

Yes I have, twice.

Also, my 3rd gen iPod touch I recently sold (which is rated for less battery life as well) went usually 2 weeks before it hit the 20% "low battery" warning with about 2 or 3 hours of music every day.

my 2nd gen likes to heat up a lot when running 3d games. It also heat up from unblock me!

On the subject of lithium-ion batteries (found in laptops, mobile phones, iPods) below is a lot of use full info about how to treat them. Basically they don't have a memory effect or need cycling like "normal" AA rechargeables and the less you use them the better so discharge them as little as possible and don't let them get hot especially when they are charging. Also the only point of fully discharging and recharging the battery once a month is to reset the internal battery meter so the device shows an accurate remaining capacity.

How to prolong lithium-based batteries

Lithium-ion battery do's and don't's

  • Do charge the battery often. The battery lasts longer with partial rather than full discharges.
  • Do not use if pack gets hot during charge. Check also charger.
  • Charge methods: Constant voltage to 4.20V/cell (typical). No trickle-charge when full. Li-ion may remain in the charger (no memory). Battery must remain cool. No fast-charge possible.
  • Rapid charge = 3h
  • Avoid full cycle because of wear. 80% depth-of-discharge recommended. Re- charge more often. Avoid full discharge. Low voltage may cut off safety circuit
  • No maintenance needed. Loses capacity due to aging whether used or not.
  • Store at 40% charge in a cool place (40% state-of-charge reads 3.75-3.80V/cell at open terminal.
  • Do not store at full charge and at warm temperatures because of accelerated aging.

^^^^^ Great advice.

OP: Your ipod touch is obviously faulty.

My iPhone 4 has outstanding battery life compared to all other comparable phones.

Maybe i'm wrong, but i'm sure tests have generally showed Apple are actually quite reserved on advertised battery life. I know i definately get longer than the advertised battery life, my wifes shuffle lasts forever and everyone who has an iPad swears the battery is fantastic.
