Okay, so here's the history, I'll let you tell me what you think of it.

US relations over the years have been increasing with Russia, right? But here's the odd thing: The US and Russia are still competing, kind of...
Russia went after Afganistan, so the US goes in and helps Afganistan by supporting the Taliban. We give them weapons and equpiment to fend off the Ruskies.
Now the US is going after Iraq. Russia was supplying Iraq with equipment needed to fend of the US, such equipment and stuff as nightvision equipment and anti-tank weapons.

Kind of funny, but not really, that the US and Russia are still competing like this if our relations have improved....

Well, yeah, but that was like fifteen or twenty years ago. Of course, even with our aid, it took them forever to take control of the country, which they finally did on September 11, 1996 - score! Fortunately, they were ousted after just six years in power, and before I could submit the name "Taliban" to Kia instead of "Sorento." Dammit.

The difference this time is that private Russian businesses are the ones supplying the Iraqis, rather than the Russian government itself, as President Putin is quick to point out.
