Hello. I have a brand new laptop with an Intel core I7 processor, as well as 8GB of ram. I am looking to run rFactor 1 on this computer, and I am wondering if my computer should be able to handle the game with most options set to full for graphics. Please tell me what you think.

rFactor is old, doesn't take much to max that out. I'm running a laptop with an i3 processor and 4GB of RAM and I easily max out the game with mods installed without any framerate issues.

8 would be more than enough, plus anything 4GB and above would suffice for most games. It doesn't make too much difference if it's 4, 6, or 8GB really, but the more the better.

I'm also planning on getting a laptop with 8GB of RAM later and I'm sure it could run something like that with consummate ease from what I've seen. The GPU and processor are more important to consider anyway though.

Should be totally fine, but what graphics card is in that laptop?

Honestly, it's put away right now so I can't check. But something from Nvidia, I think the name is.

In my experience the GPU takes up the most RAM. I haven't used laptops for gaming really, so I don't know what kind of graphics cards they are capable of putting in those, but 8GB should cover most games, and for sure you will do really well on any racing sim.

Anything over 4GB is a bit overkill. Are you planning to upgrade to Windows 8 anytime in the foreseeable future?

8GB is fine. Stick with it. 4 is a budget, 8 is preferable, 16 is for people like me that would buy it because they can and/or actually use it (you wont).

My main reason for posting here is that this is the wrong section buddy, you might wanna make posts like this in the Computers and Technology section, where it belongs.

I have 6 of my PC, and when theres a lot going on it's still slow sometimes. After 6gb you won't notice speed anymore.

rFactor only uses 2GB RAM by default. You can patch it use 4GB using this patch. Any more RAM than that will be useless for rFactor 1.

Your graphics card will have the largest impact on performance for rFactor.

1 sole thing will dictate how something runs, so many different facotrs come to play in my small experience of making a pc game run :)

So I guess my 16gb is totally unnecessary :P

Yes. 4 to 8 GB is the ideal range. 4GB if you are going to use other programs like LibreOffice, and 8GB for applications that require more graphic intensive processes. Anything from 8GB to 16GB, the OS will read it, but it will not use the extra memory 95% of the time. Above a certain point, the computer will not read it at all.

It all comes down to the power and RAM of the GPU, really.

Good GPUs have usually their own memory.

There is no limit on the amount of memory a 64 bit operating system can use. Well, there is but we won't see it anytime soon... 2^64 bytes is a huge number. Depending on your version of Windows (64 bit) you can use up to 8 GB at the basic consumer level; while Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise can utilize up to 192 GB (same with 8 as far as I know)... That is all on Microsoft's programming and the need to have that much; not the computer.

RAM is cheap and never hurts to have more; did I mention cheap?
