Is blocking someone a bad thing?

It was a big race (13 players) on Autodromo Nazionale Monza. 610 PP restriction. Picked my pimped GT-R '07 in Midnight Purple.

I got 1st place right on first chickane (Yay!). Mind you I was not cheating.

Then there was this moron on a Lambo Murcielago with ugly paint job (puke green metallic) who was ramming everyone and cutting shortcuts in this and past races.

The jerk tried to PIT-maneuver me, ram me so I fly out of the track, but failed miserably.

He overtook me using that big green area at the chickane and "won".

I said "Nice shortcutting :)" at the end of the race.

He responded with something along the lines of "You were blocking, had no other way", I dont speak Czech but some words have analogues in Russian.

Then his fellow czech host kicked me for blocking, as far as I understand.

:)

WTF really? Now I know there are restrictons on blocking in RL in F1, but we were not driving Formulas.

What do you guys think?

In my opinion, continuous blocking is a bad thing, you gotta let them pass at some point.

Here's my take, If you move over once going into a corner to deter another racer from passing you then it's a clean move. If in that instance if you were to be spun out, don't complain about it, because it would be just as much your fault as the other racer's. If you're swerving back and forth to block somebody, then I would consider it a dirty move with the one being blocked having every right to hold thier ground and send you into the fence.

I was driving straight and he rammed me from behind, horning and flashing his headlights. I dont know if you can consider that blocking, hah.

What I'd also like to know, if there are any restrictions in different types of racing in real life?

Blocking, or swerving around to break a draft are really dubious tactics, are bad manners and would be strictly forbidden in a GTP room (they are both specifically mentioned as part of the on-line etiquette for GTP tagged drivers).

You can make one move on a straight... and this move should be made early enough to not be considered a block.

If you see someone has more speed than you and is about to pass you, and you make a move to the inside to prevent them overtaking so late that they have to take avoiding action... that's a block.

If you make a move to the inside well before they reach you, with the intention of forcing them to take the outside line, that's OK.

But be aware that cars in your mirror appear father away than they really are.

That's how all GT Planet members should be racing when online.

👍

Then I can safely say I was not blocking the puke green metallic Lambo! He just crashed into me from behind on a straight road with me not swerving around, then attempted to PIT, which he wouldnt be able to do if I've blocked him. I also was defensive on corners.

Anyway, the question is still open - what's the situation in Real Life racing?

In F1 it's pretty much the same... you're allowed one move on the straight.

In other formula's it tends to be less well defined... but if you cause an accident through bad driving (and blocking/swerving would be considered as such), and you're driving is witnessed by others (other drivers or marshals), you will be up in front of the stewards and you will be penalised.

Blocking has always been a sticking point with me as well and I've lost many an online race by being blocked to the point of collision at the finish line. I race clean, and I've had many races where I've ran second all race and not passed someone because I was afraid of bumping them off the track or sideways for several laps, only to be blocked at the last millisecond at the line.

If you want to block a certain race line on the track, move over early enough so someone can adjust their line and take the slower way around. If they can still pass on the outside of you, more power to them and let em' go. There is no glory in winning or securing a spot by blocking someone to the point of wrecking them. Michael Shumacher and Dale Earnhardt have ruined racing for everyone...lol.

I try to drive clean as much as I can too, but people play games to have fun. I dont get mad when I get blocked, its more challenging and intense that way.

The problem is that different people have their own idea of "fun". For example, I dont find a race with assists off fun, I think its a torture (I dont have a wheel, I play with Sixaxis). Others hate aids.

This happened Monday night: A car behind me, carrying far to much speed broke late to nab the inside on C1 autumn ring. I powered out at the apex and he, horns and all, smashed into me. He states it was my fault. His car couldnt corner at the speed he was going (its not initial D, there are no gutters:dunce:)

He believes I should I looked in my mirrors and let him through. He was still on brakes as I was exiting the corner. I crossed his line (yes) and we did reach the entrance together, however I was powering out while he was still had to be on the brakes at the apex. The replay was very clear. After the race (and subsequent replay, no mention of it continued)
