Is GT6 pushing PS3's hardware limit?

There are rumors saying Sony will reveal a VR headset for the PS4 next week on CES. Kaz Hirai will hold the keynote there and maybe rumors are right. Would be a very interesting idea to put a headset on for GT7.

If rumors are true, I think DriveClub will be the first racing game to make use of the headset.

If they would have maxed out the hardware with GT6 (which i doubt), then to me it seems that they chose to use the PS3's limits in the wrong way, as too much was dedicated to some aspects which left the rest second rate.

I'd prefer they would have chosen to sacrifice in order to make the game good all round then.

In the order of; "ok we need descent engine sounds this time, implement a better race structure and update our AI badly, so let's use RAM for that and forget about having a sky that maps the freaking stars correctly"...

1440x1080P, weather, day-night cycle, 60fps and 16 cars on track is quite a feat on 8 year old hardware if you ask me.

It's hard to name a game that comes close on consoles, games that do include night and weather usually run at 30fps (Supercar Challenge, PGR, Superstars V8, Race Pro).
Read above :D

There are definitely trade offs due to the extremely limited hardware, but naming what took priority in development is debatable.

Technical Improvements
- Physics
- Slightly better AI
- Higher resolution
- Quicker load times

Technical Drawbacks
- AA (And motion blur to mask it)
- Shadows
Agree.
And I think the improvements made in GT6 are what PD thought were necessary(in their minds).
But they can't please everyone lol.

If sony brings out a VR headset you can almost be guaranteed it will cosut more than twice as much as the Ocolus Rift and be just as good as the Ocolus Rift. Ive seen rumours that the Sony headset will cost over $1000

Actually the PS3 uses a set of cell processors. I think there are 8 of them and they are pretty fast. The problem is that they are also hard to code for and the GPU is underpowered compared to the processors and a small amount of ram.

it was actually a Pentium D then it would be easy to code for but slower in execution
"You forgot to read or equivalent to" that means the processing power is even. A core two duo was better ect.

Considering the lack of improvement of car textures over GT5, and menu lag during in-race car tuning options, I'm guessing that PD determined the limits of the PS3 with GT5 and pushed the limits as far as they could with GT6. The premiums look nice, but the standards are still just as blurred & pixeled as they were last game. With the limits of RAM & raw processing power of the PS3, they probably can't run 16 premium cars ontrack at once without causing major frame issues or juttering. Racing at low speeds online I've noticed screen shutter and blurred sections of track - even coming to a complete stop does not fix the issue. These are problems that most likely can't be fixed because PD doesn't have the ability to fix hardware flaws or lack of power.

For comparison, I'm running a 2nd version fat 80GB PS3, the first model without PS2 backwards compatibility. It has a 500GB laptop HDD, and has no overheating issues that others have stated. GT6 did, however, corrupt my HDD when it crashed my PS3 and had me wipe my drive to fix the issue.

As for those that doubt the ability of the PS4, its hardware is roughly 4x more powerful than the PS3, while still running a microprocessor that could be fitted into an ultrabook or maybe even a tablet. As compared to RAM, there's really no comparison - you could power 24 PS3s with the RAM that's in 1 PS4. Basically, the PS4 is a gaming PC that's shrunk to fit into a console. It will take a few years before the limits of the PS4 are reached, so GT7 will be a masterpiece compared to any DLC or updates that PD can make for this game. I have no doubts that atleast half, if not all, cars in GT7 will be premium, and possibly over 20 cars per track per race.

I think it's pretty similar to GT5.
The way it pushes the limits is the size of the contents. The game contains much more than fits on a BluRay I think. That's why you need to download so much extra stuff right from the start. Could possibly have been a double disc game, but the downloading works as long as you're not offline, which I guess most people here aren't :)

I don't think it's pushing it to the absolute limit because there's still enough power to do 1080p/60fps. (Well, it's trying to do 60, anyway..) But I think they're doing all that's possible at 1080/60, yes.

What? I have no idea what you are talking about.

I know a core 2 duo is better and faster than a PentiumD I have both here in different machines as well as several other processors. Being someone who has been building PCs and writing software professionally for many years I do know a thing or 2 about processors ;)

Cool man i guess you already know the old school processors are all very outdated then.

Why are people so on edge about "resources" being wasted on the accurate astronomical placements? It's open source plug'n'play stuff. It just sounds good in the blurb. There's no effort involved in returning the data, most GCSE Computer Science students could write you a lookup from published sources in about an hour (including testing). The harder part is representing it graphically, but that's something that PD would find very easy to do.

OT: Yes, I believe Kaz when he says that GT6 explores the limits of what the PS3 can do. Just don't be sucked in by the marketing nonsense ;)

Before forza 5 came out people were saying how it was going to be heaps better than forza 4 what with it being next generation an all, but truth is it isn't yes the graphics are marginally better but thats about it , and yes I have both the 360 & the xbox one , the xbox one im shortly going to be returning along with forza 5 as for me there both a disappointment.

All im saying is don't get you expectations up to high.

yeah I think it's pushing it.. I mean look at the specs of it for crying out loud.. doesn't it have like 256mb ram?? and less than 512mb of video graphics??
I'm no computer guru but that's lowwwwwwwwww for a game that looks this detailed and good

Well it's believable that GT6 is right on the edge since I'm getting some nasty FPS drops at the start of races which is an indication of that.

Make sure flicker reduction isnt enabled in the visual settings. Makes a big difference. Use sharpen for best frame rate.

GT5 pushed the PS3 harder, there's been a downgrading of the lighting and menu graphics that has lead to improved frame rate and menu loading times.

They are surely pushing PS3 to the limits. But I can't stand PD's actual approach in GT6 - Graphics over FPS. GT used to be the game with absolutely steady 60 FPS no matter what happens on the screen. When they have so advanced LOD system with adaptive tesselation I can't understand why they can't hold 60 FPS sacrificing some details in those performance demanding moments on the track.

When did GT ever hold 60fps absolutely steady ? Serious question.

You are wasting your time. People will expect a lot more from GT on the PS4 than what they will actually get

I really really believe that PD doesnt think that stars are more important than all the things you people have been crying about

But the thing is, those stars demand next to nothing from the console, its basically just a picture in the sky

Surely they would have chosen the best AI ever made or 500 cars on track at the same time over realistic night sky but they couldnt make it work and thought: hey, why not?

After all, it looks pretty amazing and makes the game running on a 6+ YEAR OLD CONSOLE look even better than it already does.

Do you mean full 1080P?

Achilles heel of the PS3 is memory.
512MB... 256MB for video and 256 gen purpose....what the hell were they thinking....

Considering a certain other console only had 10MB more, there wasn't much wrong in the RAM count. BANDWIDTH on the other hand...
