Is there even any plausibility to what Sandy said?

And as far as the "switch", yeah, mine has never gone off either
Obviously not what the subject is about. :p

No, only the bearings in the fan will suffer. Nothing else. Like I said, electropnics brake, they don't wear out like bearings, for example.
Not true. When the system heats and cools the boards expand and contract also each time you turn it on there is a rush of power through the now cool parts and they heat rapidly. Tis much better to leave them on for extended periods than to turn them off for 15 minutes or an hour and right back on again.

Electronics don't brake they fail electrically due to heat, poor or broken connections and sudden changes in voltage like off on off on repeatedly over short periods.

btw the electricity used is not that much really. It does add up of course but the PS3 slim uses about 100 watts or so. Your electric company charges per KWH here it is abotu $0.07 per KWH the PS3 would use 1KWH every 10 hours of use which comes out to less than 20 cents a day so it will not break the bank.

Well a break wont worry me for another year , as my 80 GB PS3 has got full breakdown cover.

It was only like £30.00 for 2 years.

In California the Tier 3/4 rates are .40 per KWh which is about $1 per day or $365 per year. That's actually quite a lot if you're the one paying the bill. The original PS3 uses about twice that, or $730 per year.

I've spent years as a technician and field service engineer working on computers. Power cycling modern systems doesn't stress them because the power supplies ramp up the voltage gradually. Heat failures due to bad solder joints will be exacerbated by hot/cold cycling (ref: XBox 360 failures) but this only happens in a poorly designed/over-stressed system which the PS3 slim is certainly not. In a working system you can heat stress it as much as you like (I have, with a heat gun) and it never fails.
