Is it me or....

When your driving a say 280 horsepower car, it sure doesn't feel like it in the game. For example, alot of cars in real life that have like 200hp are pretty fast, where'as cars in GT3 which even 300hp, don't feel there going that fast. Is this just me or is this fact. It should be fixed in GT4.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that the reason a 200 HP car feels faster in real life than a 300 HP car in GT3 has to do with all the ways that your body knows that a 200 HP car is fast. The pull against your seat when you accelerate, the look of the trees on the side of the road flying by (peripheral vision), even the feel of the engine in the car. All of this contributes to the lack of apparent speed in GT3.

Yup, cyberstuff is exactly right... with GT3, the only sense of speed you get is the visual perception of the scenery going by (and a little bit of feedback in the rumble feature of the DS2, but not much). And as he said, the main thing is that you can't feel the pushing against your seat (whether from accelerating or going through a corner) - You can't feel any of the extra G forces.

Another thing might be that a 200hp car does not go "twice as fast" as a 100hp car.

You will notice the difference between 50hp and 80hp (30 hp difference), but you will not notice it from 200hp to 230hp.

Ofcourse you might notice your laptimes go up (or down, if overpowered ;) )

Anyway, I think the feeling of speed is quite decent in GT3.

I'd have to agree that the speed in GT3 is accurate, given what Sage and cybrstuff said. When you are in a car in real life, it looks faster than in the video game. GT1's sense of speed wasn't all that accurate- when you are going 100 MPH in GT1, it looks like you are going 200 MPH. It's pretty accurate in GT2 and 3, though.

I agree with you guys, and I would also like to add that race courses are huge and made for race cars with a lot more HP that a street car so you may not feel like you are going so fast because objects are not flying by as quickly because of the tracks large scale. I feel like I'm going a lot faster on cote d azur than on wider courses. Then again I could be completely wrong:rolleyes:

Personally, I'd say that the speed in GT3 is a bit slower than what is seems like when actually driving. In GT3, I always think of some hairpin corners as "stop, turn, go." But its not really stopping....its really going about 30mph. If I were driving a real car at 30 mph through a turn, I would definitely not think of it as stopping. But....then there's the fact that I can't feel the turn in GT3.... But I still think that the visual image of going 30 should be a lot different from being stopped.

Another funny thing is driving style: I saw a video on Daan's site where he drives a 787B aound midfield in 54 seconds.

I tried to beat that time. Although my lap visually looked a lot faster (car almost breaking out etc.) I actually ended up adding 10 seconds to the time. 1 minute 4 secs.

His lap is faster, but the driving stle is smoother, and therefore looks slower.

That's also why drifting is popular, it looks really spectacular and fast, but is actually slower.

:D If it was the 54.0xx lap, that was Flinx driving the 787 not me, and he makes everyone look slow! My best is 54.872.

Yes it was, you are right it was Flinx. If I am not mistaken he used a wheel on that lap (judging from the smooth turning of the indicator bottom left).

Still, 54.872 is also waaaay to fast for me.

I am looking into buying a good wheel to improve my laptimes. I had a Logitech Driving force once, but I returned it because the braking pedal wouldn't work properly (the 75% problem), and I couldn't shift when turning the wheel.

I hope these issues are solved with the driving force pro...

I can use some "controller driving" practice as well, so it's off to midfield for me again. Any tips?

I use a MOMO force wheel (the red one). I assume you are fully tuned up to 900whatever bhp?

EDIT: enable your PM or email and I'll send you some settings

I've turned on PM... and my Playstation :D

Edit:
Hmmm. Just checked, it has 710bhp, and 3450km on the odo. I guess I need to find some horsepower first. Maybe that does the trick allready.

I added the turbo (the only part I didn't buy obviously) and that resulted in 946bhp. I ran a test lap around midfield, and immediately improved 2 seconds, my record is now 1'02.650. I drive with the analog sticks of the controller, manual gears, and am on T8 rubber.

Wow. Down to 59.207 right now, and not even having used all setup tips. I noticed that "ride height is the mojo" for Midfield, The last uphill hairpin-chicane combination before the finish is where I am going wrong all the time.

Adding ride hight, and staying on the outside before the chicane a bit longer took a few seconds (!) off the lap times. In the middle of the chicane there is a dip in the track at the right. That's what's slowing me down (or spinning me out!)

The 946bhp helped, too :D

At least I now belong to the "Midfield in under a minute" group. Thanks Daan!

no ive seen it to in order to equal about the speed of a 500-600hp car in real life you need over 1000hp in the game, if your a real ca enthusiast you will notice that this realistic driving simulator is far from realistic

Ive Run 53.xxx at midfield and it felt stupid fast, like almost impossible, yet i can go faster and I know. And as for feeling like you stop at 30mph the game at 200mph is simulating 200mph give or take some. so when you slow down to even 50 your mind would almost feel like you can get out an walk. so when you turn the car you have to let your mind feel wha thte car is doing, thats why in a way video games are perfect practice for real racing, lets you mind prepare for things to happen just by past experience and where things will happena nd how fast you should be going, thats why its really hard to break a lap record, your mind will almost not let you go any faster. Otherwise you may lift to counter act push or whatever.

Sorry, but in GT3 if you travel at a constant speed down the 400m strip on the test track, and compare that to a real car travelling 400m at the same speed and it's very similar. The sence of speed in gT3 isn't as big as real life but that because it would be impossible for a computer game to do so.

take a 200 hp car measure how fast it accelerates no walk into your garage and get in your 200hp car and see how fast it accelerates alot faster than the game does. in a 200hp car you can have trouble hitting 110mph where in my 200hp car i have no trouble reaching 140mph. another thing is tire wear, for teh grip you get from the T1 and T0 tires they dont simulate real driving if i can use a set of Kumho Soft Compounds for an entire week end and not change them once runnign 4 1/2hour sessions on them and the grip amazing, then the game soft compound tires wear out on a lighter car in about 2 laps.

What computer games lack is "sound" (NOISE like the car is starting to fall apart, pebbles against the bottom of the car), "smell" (rubber and gasoline), adrenaline and plain FEAR!

I guess what we need is a "holodeck" like in Startrek.

The tyres arn't all that real in they speed they run out, but how quick the car covers a certain distance at a certain speed is pretty accurate, it you travel 100kph average speed in the game you'll have done around 100km in the game.

i remember like when gt3 first came out and i didnt have ps2...i was in the sony store and was playing gt3...i believe i used an f1 car on super speedway...anyways i felt the speed was so unrealistic...i felt as if i could walk faster then the car was going and i looked down and saw 200 mph...but when i got the game and i got used to it that feeling went away...now that im used to gt3...if i ever go and play f1 2001 i feel as if im going light speed...but you get used to the feeling of speed in gt3 and it doesnt become an issue

the only reason you can even feel the speed in GT3 is because they use surroundings, and when you see it go by you can in effect judge speed, and how fast something is coming up. as in F1 2001 or 2 or 3 the surroundings are further away as they really are on a F1 circuit and these games simulate speed very well, because if you have ever been to a F1 race youd notice they do travel at light speed. any car that weights Close to 1000lbs and can melt a Carbon Brake Disc is going damn fast. also GT3 doesnt simulate car sizes very well, ever stand next to a f1 car or even sit in one? well guess what take the new Mini Coopers they seem Crown Vics to a F1 car. a F1 car has a bout 15" wheels on it in the rear. But they look like they might be 18" if your watching them on TV.
