I have a small living room with no room for a steering wheel. Is it possible to win online using a controller? Also with a controller, should i drive manual or automatic?

Yes it is very possible, infact I heard more wheel users complain about how easy it is using one. I only use pad, and I'm not the fastest, I'm not slow either, but I'm content with my racing ability in the game.

I suggest manual with clutch as it will help out loads. Start with manual and work your way up

Sometimes I finish 10th in the same situation! Racing online isn't all about winning, it's about racing hard and clean with those around you, even at the back of the pack. Hit those apexes!

If i do a race of 10 online, I usually finish around 7th.

It's more about skill than it is about what controller you're using. A wheel won't magically make you faster. Just keep practising.

The actual leaderboards are pretty evenly split between wheel users and controller users. Certain cars on certain tracks tend to lend themselves one way or the other obviously, but overall the input device is more about what you're comfortable with.

Wheels are better on ovals, that's pretty much a given.

But a pad can be fast. I'm currently sitting 42nd on a rivals with the standard controller.

Some of us old people just can't use a gamepad...nor wish to when 'driving' a car.

I'll start looking out for racing drivers using a game pad next time I'm at Silverstone, Donington or Brands. :D

I always think it's great that the F1 guys use simulators too...with steering wheels of course. ;)

Anyone know which 'game' they use ?

I have won with a stock Porsche 959 with an Xbox 360 controller many times! That car is just so lucky for me. lol

If you want to be a better and faster driver in FM , then you need to learn how to drive with most aid off. That's the way FM works > manual gears , clutch on , TCS disabled for all cars exc. x or r1 class. Do not use auto transmission or braking assist , because they will make you slow-er than anyone who does not use them (and of course knows how to drive:D).

If you'd like to know where your driving skills are compared to others, try racing in production cars lobby where whole lobby drives same car without any tuning. That is a good test for driving skills :D

About wheels : only wheels you can get new are from Fanatec or Madcatz. But then there are 2 old MS models > wired /wirelles ,which you might find second hand on the net. Also there is some WII style MS wheel released when FM4 came out which is more imersive than gamepad, but it is not really comparable with "real" wheels. Prices might have dropped since XO release because you cannot use those wheels with XO :D

Which is total BS =/. I hate unfair advantages.

The only thing I'm not a fan of is the advantage you can gain from using manual with clutch. I know some controller users adapt to it, but I dislike downshifting without rev-matching, and trying to "heel-toe" with the triggers and buttons boggles my brain. The way you gain an advantage -- flat-shifting into the next gear without lifting -- seems rather lame to me, too.

I won tons of races online when I played Forza 3 in many different classes with the controller, so yeah it's possible. I quite miss having to use the clutch on a controller. So much fun.

Am I missing something ?

I gave OP answer how to be fast online and for the record I use (or I'd rather say I have used) wheel in FM.

I cannot think of one thing why using clutch and actually pressing it while changing gears manualy would be unfair advantage? You don't want to learn it or you just don't like to do that one more thing while changing gears ?
Should I call It bull***t ?

It's BS because once you learn it you car is faster than people who use automatic, which is unfair to people who don't like to use it.

There is a small advantage using clutch over not using it > with clutch you can maybe shift 0,01 sec faster than just using manual shift ,but downside effect is that if you're doing it wrong you will shift slower or in case when damage is on you will damage/destroy gearshifter > that will really slow you down :D

PS: FM game mechanics is made in a way that using less aids (ABS,TCS,autotran ...) will made you faster . Unfair ? Dunno , 4 sure that is not always "lifelike" , but blame T10 for doing It so , not users for using .

I know it's Turn 10's fault, which is why it angers me since they didn't balance it more. Honestly I have done a few free runs with some cars, comparing my times with aids to my times without aids. They are both very similar, sometimes the same, so I figured it was the Manual w/clutch that was making the other people go so fast.
Also, I don't tune much in racing sims. I prefer to race with stock/close to stock cars, which is why I win all the time in production car cycle lobbies.

The reason manual w/clutch is faster is because you can continue holding the throttle during upshifts, which gives you a bit of a boost on every gearchange.

Well there's my answer. Bleh >:/

I only have a controller and I win quite often online. I am not the greatest racer by any means but I do okay. On a side note I don't use ANY assists and I use manual with clutch. I also use the INSIDE driving view. I also tune ALL my own cars. If I had room for a wheel I would probably be using that for sure.

I actually let off the gas with every upshift and downshift. Just habit from real life clutch driving I guess.
