if you want a new computer, check out APPLES. they rarely freeze up, never really, and can do lots more than regular PCs.

if you don't really want to spend a lot, the Mini Mac is still a lot 👍

Actually I brought my new computer about a month ago

What is the lots more that Apples can do then 'regular PCs'?

Law93,

As happy as I am that you're a fan of Apple, this is probably the 4th or 5th post like this in the Computers and Web Design forum. Your suggestion would be appropriate if the thread starter was specifically asking for opinions on which brand to go with, but that's not the case with this thread. All these posts make me think that a certain company in Cupertino has sent you here to promote their product. ;)

I should also add that, while your intentions may be good, it will probably initiate another useless Mac vs. PC war with very weak points of argument and little knowledge to back them up...

- "hahaha Macs have teh 1 button mouse! Lol"

- "PCs hav viruses, lol!!!"

- "MACs can't play Games. there just an overpriced lamp"

- "but... but.... iLife!!!!"

...you get the point.

Motherboards only support one or the other. You can't have AGP and PCI-E both (depending on age of your motherboard really). Older motherboards have PCI/AGP, while newer generally have PCI/PCI-E.

PCI-E is much faster, and the cards are cheaper.

Actually... very few motherboards do support BOTH PCI-E and AGP. Those are rare and far between though, and it'll tell you if it supports both.

But no, it would not be from the same slot, the PCI-E and AGP would be two different sized, different color slots.

Casio, you'll have to check whether your motherboard supports PCI-E or AGP. If it supports PCI-E, would the 7600GT be way out of your budget? It's one kickass card. If your mobo only supports AGP, then try perhaps the 6800GT or a PCI-E version of the Radeon X800. The Radeon 9800 series is already 3+ years old, and the 9600 is even older (I think 4 years?), so it wouldn't play modern/future games that well.

P.S., anything is better than the FX5200, which was one of the worst and most disappointing cards made by Nvidia, ever...

Well. The FX5200 did alright with my old monitor, displaying things a 800x600 or even 640x480 wasn't a problem on a 15". But on a 19" Widescreen with a native resolution of 1440x900 it just doesn't look right.

Since I've got an AGP card now, I'd assume based on your guys information that a PCI-E card it out of the question. So it looks like an AGP card is the go.

I've checked out an AGP version of the X800GTO, for no other reason then I know it has DVI output. Although I'll have to save a tad more to get it if it's a good card?

Yes, definitely save a bit more and try and get that or a AGP version of the 6800 GT. It'll be worth it since you can wait longer before having to upgrade again in the future.

I just looked at a 6800GT and it's 3+ times the price of the X800 I looked at (658$AUD vs 199$), so I'd think that's out of the question.

What??? the 6800GT is $658 AUD (around $501 USD)?? For that amount of money, I can buy a 7900GTX. Are you sure it wasn't a typo on the site? Here in America, the 6800GT only costs about $230 USD (about $302 AUD). Yes it's still out of your price range (I think?) but the difference shouldn't be double from here to Australia. The X800 price is about in line with here in America.

I would recommend the 6800gs, but I don't know if 128 MBs of RAM would do it. So go for the x800.

edit: Actually, try to get the 7600 gs.

That 7600gs doesn't look like a bad one at all. I think I'll go down to the store and see if they can order me in the AGP version as they only have PCI-E's. Thanks for all the help guys 👍
