Two questions:

I'm only a beginner to GT4 having not played a GT game since GT1 on my PS1. I won all the races in GT1 in the Gran Turismo mode, but that isn't a huge achievement. Anyway, I've done a bit of racing and I'm currently working on my licenses in GT4. I've got gold on every National B test except the guided run in the Mini (B-5) around Tsukuba. When I'm driving that I feel very much restricted by my DS2 because the test requires such delicate and accurate steering. My DS2 sticks seem to have a small dead zone in the middle and then when you're out of that, the very minimum amount of steering seems to be quite a bit, so when going slow you get jerky steering. It's only causing me problems on tests where you need to be very gentle with the steering - I'm ending up cutting slow corners much too tight as a result, which makes Tuskuba's hairpins rather hard. Is this normal with a DS2 controller and something I'll get used to or should I buy a new controller? As a note, I've also got gold on most of the National A license tests, but on that B-5 test, my best time is over 7 tenths away from gold.

Second thing, in GT4 can you do the race specification upgrade to a car like you could in GT1. I think it was called that, it didn't do very much, just gave you a race car paint job with sponsors' stickers and things, it also stopped you upgrading the car any further. Not a biggie, but it made the cars look cool. :)

Thanks !

I think there might be a small dead spot in the analogs- mine are that way as well. But keep on trying, and as for the racing mods... nope. PD dropped the ball on this one. But I'll keep on hoping & dreaming until GT5.
Man, if they bring back the racing mods...I'll cry!
Seriously.

Anyways..Good luck!

Thanks. :)

Shame about the racing mods, and I guess I'll get back to practicing, I need my thumbs recalibrating to make them move more smoothly.

Hey Xander, welcome to GTPlanet 👍

Have you tried or considered using the D-pad controls as opposed to the analogue sticks? I never used the analogue sticks since I always felt I had much more precise control using the direction buttons instead...

The test you're having difficulty golding is a nasty one... one minute your pootling along nicely through some easy tests, and then WHAM! But rather than me trying to explain how I did it, check this (great) thread out (if you haven't seen it already)..

Anyway, for the record, I also have a DFP wheel, and even though I really enjoy using it, I still find that I need to go back to the DS2 (buttons) to get the golds...

Anyway, good luck...

I don't know about the D-pad. When I first had GT1 I used to use the original controller, which didn't have an analog option and I had great problems doing well at the game. When I bought an analog controller, it only took me a couple of weeks to get all the way up to having my International A license. I imagine I'll be the same with GT4. I think I'm just a bit rusty - I haven't had a console, or any driving games for years (GT1 was the last driving game I owned until I bought my PS2 a few weeks ago). I'm sure I'll get back in the groove, after all, I'm doing well with most of the license tests, there's just a few which I can't get gold on.

I'll be sure to give the buttons a go though, maybe that's the key. I use the analog controller like an RC car for GT though - one stick for steering, the other for gas and brake. It's the only game where I don't feel that the X and [ ] buttons are up to the job of gas and brake.

The buttons are pressure sensitive on the DS2 controller, so they're analog as well, not just on/off.
