is my ps3 on the verge of "dying"?

here's what's happening... for the past 2 weeks or so, whenever i turn on my ps3, after the blue and green leds lights up, it beeps, it turns yellow, then it turns red... :scared: i'll have to turn off then turn on my ps3 again a couple of times before it starts up properly... the yellow light, is that the ylod everyone's talking about? :nervous: should i start investing on a new ps3 already? :grumpy:
 
Foreshadowing to the ylod? Possibly so. Turn your ps3 vertically so it can cool down easier when its on. And backu pyour savedata
 
Witch ps3 do you have? The "fat" or "slim" version?

that's bad... well, we've had a good 2 and a half years, hehe! btw, my ps3's already vertical and i have one of those fans attached to my ps3... also, ever since that started happening, i've been backing up all my savedata...
 
I'd recommend taking it to a repair shop for an inspection. I could be something small or maybe something serious, either way you should seek an experts opinion. Prevention is better than cure.

If that's what yours is doing, then maybe soon it won't turn on at all.

If your ps3's getting hot it's quite possible that the CPU thermal compound needs re-applying. Sometimes the CPU getting to hot causes the yellow light to come on. I've heard that this solves the problem a lot of the time.
 
I think that the best you can do is to replace the thermal paste of your CPU, put a massive stand-up fan next to your PS3, and make sure that you don't leave it running on unnecessarily.

yup... this is exactly what is happening... however, after a couple of tries it turns on again... i'll probably take this to a repair shop as i'm not good with diy's...

thanks... i'll have my ps3 checked at a local repair shop... my cousin has a repair shop that repairs mobile phones and portable devices... he may have friends who can repair ps3s...

i apologize but i'm not sure if this was the right section or the questions & answers as i believe the other sections do not fit this problem... this problem started right after doing the b-spec 24 hrs of nurburgring anyway that's why i placed it here in the gt5 section...

I'll say this......Get a portable HDD and back-up your PS3 saves asap! Also have you DL'd a user made theme or something? My PS3 did The something but after I deleted the theme, it went back to normal.

What format would a USB HDD need to be in? I tried hooking up a lacie 40g USB yesterday and the PS3 never recognized it. My USB flash drives all show up.

I think it's SATA or something. I got a 500GB Western Digital for $60 like 2 years ago. There also used to be a Diagnostic that you could run but I forgot how to do it. I'll check and see and let you know in a second.
 
Hold Power button down for three beeps (while PS3 is off): Enter PS3 diagnostic mode.

From there you'll see what you can do but I've heard people have Fixxed their ps3 from running bad by using the Diagnostic. Good Luck!

FAT32 will work. Ignore what that person said about SATA, its not a format its a connector

didn't know about the diagnostic mode... i'll give it a go first before having someone from a local repair shop open my ps3 then charge me for something that might be working properly after all... tnx!
 
I bought my PS3 when it first came out. Still running like a charm. But this is making me a little scared!
 
I just had a game freeze, and then it went and flashed yellow once and then to red, I was able to start it back up though right after, I ran the fan test and just turned it right back on... any ideas?
 
My launch day PS3 went YLOD a couple months ago. Looked up a local guy on Kijiji (it's a Canadian version of craigslist) and got a permanent fix done for $60. No need to change the hard drive, no loss of data, same as it ever was. Being from the States (even in the Philippines as well for the OP) you should have no trouble finding someone local or within a reasonable distance to repair it for you. Make sure the service is advertising "BGA soldering" or "reballing" not "reflowing". Reflowing is a half-ass temporary method using a heat gun to reheat the solder on the processor to reconnect the pins.

You had it right the first time, reballing is what you want, reflow is the 1/2 arsed one 👍
 
That's what I thought when I first posted it then I looked up the guy's ad that repaired my system and he calls it a "BGA Solder Reflow." He's not a professional so I'm sure it's just an honest mistake. I thought I was right the first time too.
 
Try a self clean. I've tried it a few times and it really blows out a bunch of dust using this method 👍
