Why would Sony make a feature of the machine that instantly ruins it? Most of the time my ps3 runs without the fan on at all so I don't see how it spinning backwards would super heat anything in 30 seconds.
I just got this without any previous signs. My PS3 has been working 100% since the day I got it. Three days ago, I got Mod Nation Racers, and as I was about to start the first race, everything froze, got the two beeps, yellow light for a sec or two, and then the flashing red lights. I assumed that my PS3 was dead... I cried like a little girl, and put it away in the closet... According to the OP, his PS3 will start after a few tries. Would that mean that my PS3 could turn on eventually, and it was only a sign that it´s going to die in a future? Because if that´s the case, I could save everything that I got in the HDD.
Oh, and BTW, if this is usefull for some, it is possible to take out a stuck disc in a ylod PS3. Just put it in super fan mode, and it will eject... Thats how I got MNR out...
Yeah if it starts up, make sure you get your saves over. That was the last thing I was able to do before it took the final ca-put and now it's just sitting now trying to find a local shop to re-flow and re-ball it.
I just upgraded my hdd to 500gb from 160 which was nearly full. At least that means I've got a back up now, YAY! It was acting slow, but seems to be fine now. Helpful Hint: If you want a big HDD do it right away, it took @4hrs just to back it up!

Hey Guys, there is no self cleaning function on PS3s. This is fan testing and it just runs the fans for a few seconds at full speed. If your fans are at about dying you could give them the final shot this way.
Read before trying anything, or you may end up with a dead PS3.
