I believe piracy in the PS is what establish Sony in the video game business that is the reason behind the success of the PSONE and PS2. I really dont

think Sony cares if the games are pirate because they don't produce most of them. They make money from the console. Other companies sides with

Microsoft in the beginning of this generation as they promise there console would be unbreakable.

I never bought the first PS until games could be pirated and became popular in the area I live, then I went to buy like 40 original games and about 100

pirate games. In the PS2 I adopted the console since day one and bought about 88 games and never modded my console. PS3 from day one and I have

72 games so far. In conclusion piracy is good to some point, in Sony's case, it was the best thing that could have happen to them. I bought two ps1 at

$149(modded) and $99(Change form), two PS2 $299 and $149(slim), Two PS3 $599(Stopped Reading Disk) and $399 120GB Slim. I would have never

bought these console if piracy wouldn't have been possible in the PS one.

I never adopted many consoles because they came at a really high cost such as the Sega Consoles, the DreamCast, and Xbox so I really don't think I

would have adopted Sony. I was a real Nintendo fan and since the PS One I kind of took Sony. I support Sony so much now in days that all the

electronics I own today are from such brand and I buy every game they release including crappy games like Lair.

I don't support piracy in any way or form as I really not into today's music and my wife really enjoys going to the movies, but for a brief time the

possibility of piracy in the PS one game me the chance to explore and adopt new video game franchises. My first Gran Turismo was pirate and I bought

then GT2 and GT3 original. Then I went to buy the first game original for collection purposes. Currently own all GT's. Apologies for such a long post.

It depends if you're sailing near the Somali coast I guess....

That's a really hard to read post btw :)

And what do you think this has to do with GT5 instead of the video game and consoles forum? Also piracy is illegal and wrong as it loses the developer money.

Simple, without that I would not be even playing GT5. I'm talking of an era were piracy was not issue since almost nobody own a CD burner. I have a VAIO PC with Bluray burner and I have

never even use the CD burning function on it.

That has nothing to do with GT5 at all. Why don't people see that there is more than one sub-forum here?

Piracy is stealing as the data on the disc is copyrighted to the developer and is only for personal use. I'm pretty certain that Police (in the UK at least) can confiscate pirated games/dvds as they are classed as stolen goods.

I really don't understand the need for this thread since you had already posted similar in the other thread moments earlier.

As I posted in the other thread I do not agree with your thoughts, piracy is not good. Piracy has hurt the music industry especially the artists and consumers.

Sony do not make the bulk of their profit from the PS3, they make it from the games and Sony receive money from every game on the PS3 so of course they care about piracy.

Agree with 1st part, i guess that thread could be moved somewhere.

But saying it's 100% bad and developer/publisher always losing the money is far from the truth.

First.. most of the people who are pirating games (and not buying retail ones, ever) wouldn't bought the game anyway, so no money loss for devs at all.

Second, there's some people, who loves to try game before buying it. And because not every country has rent services for games and demo versions usually won't give you the whole picture (and some games don't have any demos at all), only way to try the game is pirate it.
Thanks to that, i found some great games/series that i wouldn't bought. Like GT series, 'cause i'm not car fanatec and not big fan of the racing games.
So i've "got" GT2 some other day and love the series since that day, yes, i bought a retail version later (much much later, but still bought). Those were days when i was just a kid and couldn't afford buying games.

But these days, when i live alone, have a job and can afford to buy a few games per month (too bad there's not that many good games these days, so its most likely 7 - 10 games per year), i'm still using the same methods.
Of course there's some "must have" games in my list, which i'll buy by release day, GT5 for example, but if i'm not sure, i'll just try some game for free 1st.
Then, i'll either buy this game if it was good, or delete it/throw it away.

But i'm pretty sure there's not that many people as me or TC, people love free stuff...

You know, even discussing piracy (and other illegal activites) is against GTP's AUP.

Yes piracy is bad. I can't believe anyone has to ask that...

Look at what's happened to the PSP (well, besides the PSPGo, that was sony's screw up). The reason no good games come out on that are because developers are reluctant to make games for a system they won't make money on. If you want good games to come out, you have to support developers by buying those games, it's as simple as that.

Of course I do think there is a grey area in abandonware. Homebrew, in my opinion is also another matter.

Well If I adopted a consoles from Sony due to the possibility of piracy, I'm pretty sure other people would too. My tv's were all from RCA before, Computer were from Compaq and so on after the PS one I have probably in a rough estimate spend about $56,000 in sony products.

If your ps3 is jailbroke you can make a backup of your game disc and that's not illegal since you paid for game and can do what ever you want with it

That's not technically piracy, at least here in the US. But you should be careful about your reasoning. If you do have a backup of a game that you own and you somehow lose possession of the original, say it's stolen or a significant other throws it away, it is unlawful to use the backup as you no longer own a copy of the original. The point of making a backup is to use it as a safety net if the original is somehow damaged.

Stop there, because that is total rubbish. Console hardware are loss-leaders. Sony loses money on every PS3 it sells in the hope of making money on software (games). So your argument for stealing is completely unjustified.

"According to The Wall Street Journal, which examined Sony's fiscal third-quarter financial performance, the company loses 6 cents on "every dollar of PS3 hardware sales." Considering the PlayStation 3 current retails for $300, we can safely assume then, that the company loses about $18 per unit." - CNET

"Even though Sony Computer Entertainment has managed to greatly reduce the manufacturing cost of its PlayStation 3 video game system, the company still sells its console at a loss, according to a new teardown analysis conducted by iSuppli market research firm. In fact, the latest PS3 Slim 120GB costs $336.27 to make." - XBITLAB
