Is Sega GT 2002 a threat to Sony's GT?

After seeing the pics of Sega GT, I'm kinda curious that some of the cars in the game (or some manufacturer) are in the Sega racing game and not on GT. And with the "power" of the X-Box to some PS2/GT fans it make them worry.

Is the new Sega GT a worthy adversary to Gran Turismo? :nervous:

I don't know...it's going to have to be extremely good. But, if it is better - that's great! Not only would it give auto enthusiasts like ourselves a load of fun, but it would also get the folks over at Polyphony Digital on their toes to further improve upon the classic GT series. Competition is a good thing for gamers! :)

The graphics are going to be great, that much I've seen in Pictures and videos. Sega GT (On the Dreamcast) was aimed at the GT series, but it wasn't as deep of a game, and the control scheme had too many issues. If they iron all of that out, I'm sure it will be a great game. It's going to take a heck of alot to beat Gran Tourismo though, especially since it is Sony's flagship series and gets the A-list treatment. Sega might not have the same level of resources to devote to a single game.
The one I'm really curious about is Auto Modellista by Capcom. (For the PS2) I like the cell shaded graphics, and if that controls well it could be my next great racing purchase. :)

I will sometime this year but it will not be equipped with online capabilities says an article on a magazine that I forgot to recall.

Gran turismo has a better reputition than Sega GT.PLus Gran Turismo is better than the Xbox if you really put alot stuff to the game!!!

Ok, first off, I know I'm gonna hear it for this comment, but I *hope* that Sega GT 2002 lays the boots to GT3. As Jordan said, competition can only be a good thing.

Geez... if there was no competition out there in the gaming market, we'd still all be playing Indiana Jones on the Atari 2600.

I can only pray that it has more cars, more tracks, *racing modifications*, better control, and generally, better everything. 'cause sure, PD will *try* to improve GT for the next release, but there won't likely be anything ground breaking unless they have to fight for the #1 spot.

I loved the original Sega GT, but the controls really sucked. If they fix them up and they have killer graphics I think The new Sega GT could give Gran Turismo a little competition

I too hope this is a quality game. I do believe that it does have a lot to live up to if it is to be better then GT3. The GT team definitely has a jump as to experience with physics engines and those sort of things. I also think that it will only promote competition.

Kyle,

Now, I curious - what benefit would there to you if it sucked?

Now, the benefit (as I think I mentioned before) to you if it was fantastic, would be for PD to work really hard to make the next GT (assuming they aren't too far into development) even better than Sega GT.

So, basically, if Sega GT is a better game, it's a win/win situation - whether you have an Xbox and/or a PS2.

Or, can you shed some more light on your response, 'cause right now, I'm not grasping it.

He's a fanboy

Tom - lol

I had assumed that - I'm just trying to puzzle out how anyone (fanboy or not) could benefit from a game (on a system different than what they own) that sucks.

Man, I oughtta go back to University and write my thesis on "Fanboy-ism".

Kyle,

Alright... Now, let me ask some more questions then. 'cause I'm a curious sort, and I've got time to kill.

Why is it that you hate X-box?
  • Is it inferior hardware?
  • Is it inferior software?
  • Is it 'cause of big-bad Microsoft?
  • Has it wronged you in some way? Stole your lunch money?
    [/list=a]

Now, if it's A) or B), what advantages can you see that the PS2 has over the X-box?

If it's C) well what operating system do you use? And if you are stuck using Windows in one form or another, what would you prefer to use? and a better question is, why aren't you?

if it's D) <shrug> Well, that's just odd and I certainly can't argue with that logic.

I had Sega GT on my Dreamcast but it just screamed at me "look im just copying Gran Turismo but adding crappy handling and an option to make hybrids built in" but yes competition makes games better thats why I dont want X-Box and GC to fail so I get good PS2 games!

yeah, the dreamcast game was terrible in all aspects. I think it could have been better had they given it more development time, but the DC didn't last that long anyway... :( I think that game was unfortunately aimed at being a deep arcade racer (bleah!)

The only thing the x box has on the ps2 is graphics. IMO its not better in any other way. The PS2 has easier DVD remote, something you have to "unlock" with the Xbox, no backward compatitability with the X-Box so you have to buy a $60 ho-hum game, the x-box is huge and the PS2 is smaller, and the X-Box has only one perfect game which is called Halo. Meanwhile the PS2 you have GT3, GTA3, MGS2, and other great games that the X-box doesn't have.

Cool - :)

Thanks. Now, I've only had a few hours sleep, so I can't actually sit down and the pros and cons of both systems but thanks for the clear answer. Now I've got a better idea of what your thinking is. As I say, I was quite curious.

If the handling of the cars wasnt soooooooooo crappy and the licence tests werent soooooooooo hard I would probably be still be playing it on my DC as a fallback for when I get bored of GT3. I liked some of the circuits and the design a car feature was great apart from having fake bodies and having to do annoying licences to unlock them. I wouldnt mind playing the new one but I still think its just going to be outshadowed by GT4, no matter how fancy the graphics are. Personally I dont think that Its even a threat to GT3 considering that GT3 is still in the UK Multiformat Games chart at number 5 (i think) and its been out for aaaaaaages now and its still selling.

SegaGT2k2 comes out in early September, but GT4 is a full 2 years away according to Sony's own estimates. So GT3 will be the only real comparison. I don't really look at games as threats to other games, because enthusiasts buy all they can of their favorite genre. Take me, I go for Racing and Role Playing. If any system comes out with something interesting, I'm all for it even if it's not as good as say... GT series, or the Final Fantasy series. Something different is nice, which is why I really enjoy Wipeout Fusion, Splashdown, Rallisport Challenge, and Tokyo X-treme racer zero. None are as good as GT3, but they all have personality and flair that brings me back to the console looking for more. :)

Is that tokyo extreme racer game the same one that was on the DC????

I thought it was ok but I dont like racing on the streets and somehow It didnt do it for me although I liked the ground effects and body kits. Yeah I mean im gonna try and have a play at that Sega GT2k2 you never know I might end up buying an Xbox Just to play it (I doubt this cuz im sooo poor). Do try and buy different types of games though rather than stick to the same old genres I mean FF10 is kinda stale so I got Grandia instead, I am even thinking of getting a GC cuz apparently Square are making a RPG for it. Would you buy Gt4 if it was complete and utter monkeybollocksspewtem I certainly wouldnt no matter how good the previous installations of the game were.

i d believe that you are forgetting one EXTREMELY IMPORTANT asset...that would be called THE PROCESSOR!! The Xbox has a 776Mghz(give or take about 2 Mghz)processor and the PS2 has what Five-Hundred something.......the only reason i got the PS2 pver the Xbox was because of GT3 and id sell my PS2 for an Xbox and Sega GT 2k2 faster than u can say Supercalifragelisticespealidocious!and i absolutely loved the first Sega GT.it is what introduced me to Gran Turismo!

Info:
Sega GT 2002 will let players look at shots taken from a race, along with trophies and awards. In addition, the look of the garage will gradually change over time to match the season and time-of-day settings on the Xbox.

Wow Entertainment plans to release three versions of the game for the Xbox. The two additional titles will be called Sega GT 2002 Append Disk and Sega GT 2002 Online. The Append Disk will likely be an add-on pack with new tracks and cars, which will likely be sold or distributed much in the way the DOA 3 expansion pack disk was. Sega GT 2002 Online will be a LIVE compatible title.
Screenies. There's 130 of them, so I'll just post the first few.
