Is the Lounge a better place to practice than practice mode??

Think so.

Reasons:
- fuel/tyre simulation
- quicker change/browsing of your favourite cars. no need to exit to gt life/garage etc.
- damage option
- a friend could pop-in for a quick race

added/edited:
- in FREE RUN no car wear down or add driving distance

Agree with all points. :)

Yes, I've been using a lounge for car testing and practice... mainly because it allows much quicker car changes.

All of the above.
though it seems you can't flip that much online.
And if you do FREE RUN it doesn't make your car wear down or add driving distance.

Good points, well made. I shall be doing this from now on.

Tried online for the first time the night before last and really enjoyed it, but didn't think about using it for this. So obvious, yet didn't see it.

Thank you. 👍

You need to add the cars to your favourites tab before you enter the lobby, but yes it is easier.

Also on time/weather tracks you can select the weather (Fixed or Variable)
Time of day is also better here, you can set the time of day to whatever time you want and the rate of time change. Useful for doing a quick dusk-into-night race, for example.

Yep. Online physics prevent you from flipping.
Another example of where an okay sim is turned into another "game" because of its online. :indiff: Steering assist online when I have it off, flip prevention, grippier physics, and horrible collision physics all become present in online mode.
I can steer how I want, flip my car, drift well, and get a reasonable result from a collision while offline. :(

Don't know about flipping cars online, but what I have understood so far is that the real practice mode simulates an empty fuel tank and no tyre wear at all.

Maybe that's why many people think online physics are different but they should not be. It's just your car is loaded with fuel and the tyres eventually wear off.

I was dubious about the effect of the fuel / tyre wear but after doing the Laguna Seca 200 last night I could really feel the difference a full tank and fresh tyres had. You can definitely feel the weight after a pit stop. Practice mode is too easy I think.

👍 to tyre wear and fuel useage effecting lap times and how cars handle.

IMO, that's why people think off-line is different to on-line. Run more than a few laps on harder tyres and you can immediately feel how the grip increases as the tyres warm up and then starts to slide away as the tyres wear.

my dad plays in practice mode, thats all its good for too, people who suck.
I practice in public lobbies, "no race" or "free run" lobbies are the test, tune meet an greet new friends, tire wear fuel being used, all of it. I dont understand the point of private lounges as far as testing purposes goes, well, i guess i understand it, but it doesnt make sense to me. Explain it all you want, it wont help.

Yeah I generally just make free run rooms, it's fun to have people pop in and out whenever they want and have a friend show up and try to beat your time or whatever.

I use practice mode because in it I get the exactly same handling every time lap after lap. Far more consistent for tuning results than the Lounge that changes the conditions all the time as tyres and fuel burn off. Also my three Vettel gold trophies might like to have a word with you about who sucks in this game.

Is there way of seeing a collection of lap times in the lounge though? You just get the fastest lap on the screen when you start driving. But if I have multiple cars picked and I want to compare their time there is no easy way of seeing that, where as in practice mode I can...

Does it save your fastest lap times like the practice area does? As in, they'll still be posted the next time you show up?

Edit: I see someone else just asked this. Lol. Sorry.

It's easy. Write the time down. :dunce:

Also,, you can drive in the night wihout fearing it'll rain. Change the hour, fix weather in sunny, driving line off and VOILA! Nirvana-Ring and Sarthe-Halla!!! :D

I hate only being able to access your favorites.
So you have to exit the whole section, go to your garage, remove one of your favorites, add the car you want to use, then connect back to online.
All that just to be able to access 9 out of 10 cars!
How in the world did they ever think we would only want to access 10% of our cars?! Stupid.

I practice online simply because I want to get used to the different handling of the cars for my race series.

Also the cars that I know I will use specifically online, I tune online.
The only annoyance I have is that instead of just quiting the current run and going straight to settings I have to quit to the pits, then quit to the lobby, wait for the lobby to reload, then to go settings.

Guys does anyone know why in my lounge my tyres never heat up? They are always stone cold. Then i switched too an open lobby and tyres worked fine! Really doing my nut in.

I remember I spent like 2 hours in practice mode on Daytona getting my sprint cup car set up just right so I could take it online and be competitive in the NASCAR races. That was a bad idea. I took it online and the car was wild and completely undrivable. That's when I figured out I should probably do all my testing in my lounge or on free run servers.

Just swap your car down one or two grades of tire while tuning in offline practice mode and it will transition to online much better. I tune offline this way and most of my stuff works the first time out online, occasionally I need do nothing more than snatch a part off the drivetrain if there is a problem; flywheel upgrades tend be most noticeable nuisance with tire wear enabled.
