Is there a way to save replays and view them other than in game?

Yeah so I was wondering if anyone here knows if there's a way to save replays, and then export them or extract them somehow from the PS3 so I can watch them outside of the game? And then maybe transfer them to my PC, so I can upload them to Youtube...

Does anyone know if this is possible? I heard about things called Capture Cards, what are they, and how do they work?

I heard talk that GT5 was supposed to have an upload to Youtube feature, either it was omitted from the final version/will come in an update/or I just can't find it.

I just noticed there was an "Export to Save Data," option when you select a replay. I tried that, thinking maybe it would be the same as when you take a Photo and export it to the XMB, but that didn't work either. It just exported it to the save data utility under the Game menu in the XMB. For what reason, I have no idea though.

I think it would be really cool if they had the feature, the ability to export replays into regular video files that you can watch on your PS3, or video files that are able to be copied to your PC.

I think it's a way to back up the replay data becuase I did a transfer of data from an old ps3 to a new one and the replay didn't go along with the game save data.

The Replays contains a set of instructions of only the game itself & the PS3 can read. If you export it onto a PC, It'll contain some files like a file with an .OLC extension (I think). These files are the instructions that is only addressed readable on the PS3 & GT5. As far as I know, there is no possible way to read them on PCs.

Capture Cards are like external or internal devices that gives the ability to record the TV Screen & only the TV Screen. That also includes audio. A Capture Card can be from a USB to an integration on a piece of chip that requires motherboard installation.

Thanks for the info.

So where could I find and buy a capture card that is compatible with the PS3? Or are they all the same pretty much?

Can you recommend any that are good?

And which ones do you guys here use?

sorry for all the questions, but I'd like to be able to upload my replays and share them or at least save them to watch myself without having to turn the ps3 on...

^ I've never used a capture card but daan seems to have good results with a Hauppauge HD PVR.

being able to upload replays into the cloud is something that i am really hopeful gets put into the next update

PC couldn't do anything with them even if they could be read on PC. The replays aren't saved as a video file, but rather simply as game data. The replays are exactly identical to watching an actual, live, in-game race taking place in real-time right at that moment. The replays simply keep track of the vehicles, track location, and what exactly those vehicles do throughout the race, and then renders them when viewing the replay. One problem PC would have with this is that it doesn't have the entire GT5 data collection, meaning the game engine, all the car models, all the audio, et cetera needed to render a replay.

The only way a GT5 replay could be displayed anywhere other than in GT5 would be if it was exported in a video format of some kind. Simple replay notes won't cut it.

FM3 allowed me to upload replays to the Forza website, from which I could save them to my computer and do what I wish with them, like upload them to YouTube. It took a while to convert to a video, even for just a short clip, but it was still doable. It's a shame we can't yet do this in GT5.

IceMan PJN is exactly right.

Let's say we both go to watch a race at Tsukuba. You video the whole race on your handheld device.

I decide that every 60th of a second I'm going to write down on a notepad the position/angle/speed of each car, the status of each car's controls and so on.

We've both recorded the race and can both recreate the race.

The difference is that YOU can transport your video to anywhere you like. For me to recreate the race I need the track and the cars.

GT5 records replays the same way as me with my notepad. It needs to load the track and the cars when it reconstructs the race for you.

Hope that made some sense...

You have two main options High Definition or Standard Definition capture cards.

As far as I know, if you have a SD capture card, your PS3 must be connected in standard definition (not too much of an issue if its simply recording replays i guess - but for live gameplay recording or other games be aware you need to play via the component cable).

Options (I know of) for HD: Hauppage PVR and Black Magic Intensity PRO
SD: Dazzle DVD Recorder (you need to buy some additional splitters which are really cheap on amazon).

Quality wise (opinion), the Hauppage HDPVR is best, closely followed by Black Magic, the Dazzle is reasonable and adequate for most purposes. You can also go on YouTube and insert the capture card device name followed by "Quality Test" to see which ones would meet your requirement (on the HDPVRs make sure you view in 720p or 1080p!)

Cost wise this is reflected as above, you will be looking to spend the good part of £200 for the Hauppage, £150 for the Black Magic, and £40 for the Dazzle.

Also bear in mind, if you wish to upload the video files onto the internet, then since the HD files will be greater in file size than SD, they will take longer to render. I don't know how large the file sizes will be so cannot comment further on this, but you may wish to consider your upload speed as well.

I was considering getting the Black Magic, but then thought I'd try first with the Dazzle, i must confess its still boxed.

I've got the Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle arriving on Friday, cost me about £144 online. you need a PC that will handle USB 3.0 for that, or you can buy the Intensity Pro, which is an internal PCI-e card.

Bought mine from here http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/bmd_intensity_shuttle

You're close.
Usually, a driving game replay contains the player commands (what controller input was processed by the game during the race), and the starting condition of the race. This two simple things are enough for the game engine for replaying the whole race. This is the best way to have light replay files.

This is why : you can't rewind (unless the game engine itself allows it), replay size could vary depending on controller (GT2 analog replays where far bigger than digital ones), you can sometimes see a replay go totally wrong (i never saw it in GT5) if even a tiny tiny tiny problem occurs somewhere. As an example, the replay of my PS2 GT Concept goes silly on my PS3, because the engine works slightly different.

GT5 replay saves are data files, not video files. It's not possible to view them as videos because they contain no video, only instructions to allow GT5 to reconstruct the replay. That's why they're tens of kb in size, not tens of Mb...

Mabay when gran turismo stream comes in one of the updates you might be allowed to upload replays.Im sure they were making it you could upload your replays to youtube before the game was published

thanks Famine, so there's still no other way to upload the saved game replays online aside from recording it..

If you don't have a capture card yourself, you could find somebody in your own region which you can send the replay file, they can then import it and record the playback.

If I have a save I really want to share, I:
* Record it to my PVR
* Rip it to a DVDR
* Rip from the DVD to my PC

I do some recording every now and then, this is what I use:

Hauppauge HD PVR (limited to 720p*) records via USB 2.0 directly to PC.
Editing done with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11.

Please see my profile for some GT5 video samples on YouTube.

*1080p recording would be nice, but not every game supports 1080p, and I personally think for internet video it's not necessary, not to mention the huge file size it will generate.

Bingo, I always rip in 720p for that very reason. I can rip in 1020p but made a conscious choice not to :)
