The dentist told me that I'm grinding off my incisers (or whatever they're called, the sharp pointy ones on the sides) while I sleep. He said that it would only be 500 dollars to get a mouthgard to prevent that.

So I went to target and bought a 99 cent mouthpeice and I'm using that now. Did I miss something or is there just no reason at all to pay that?

Now you've done it, All his overhead for the expensive drills, and assistants, and paperwork filers for insurance, and parking spaces, and greens fees, and ski trips and maids and so on are actually going to come out of his pocket.

Have you heard recently, that more doctors are accepting cash instead of insurance? Seems that they make a better profit, spend more time with indiviual patients and give better care, all while charging less. Yep, dump insurance, and everything comes up roses.

 Well, I probably think they're specially made so they can truly withstand the constant grinding at night.

I've had this kind of situation too... The best way for it to stop is actually to reduce the amount of stress you experience in your daily life.

But hey, for 99 cents, if it works even 1/10 the expensive one is supposed to work, it sure beats having to shell out $500!

Dentists are always like that. Mine wanted me to pay $120 for teeth whitener. No way Jose, I can get that at the drug store for $5.

And supposedly, store-bought whiteners work better than what the dentists do. I used Crest Whitestrips, and they worked great.

The only difference between your .99 cent and the $500 one is that the more expensive one is just moulded exactly to fit your mouth. I know I used to have a really cheap mouth gaurd when i played hockey and it was just hard rubber, and actually hurt my mouth and gums.......but whatever works for you, just dont give ino the pressure of those greedy "health specialists" or whatever their proper name is.

With this 99 cent one you boil it in hot water and then put it in your mouth and suck so that it gets molded properly. It fits pretty well but it's a little bigger than what the dentist would have given me (because it's supposed to keep my teeth from getting knocked out).

My wife saw one that was supposedly for teeth grinding in the drug store for 25 bucks. I might do that if I get tired of this one. So far so good though.

Really ? I've had a box of those for a year. I keep forgetting. I gotta break those out.

Do you drink a lot of coffee? My dentist has told me the same thing and seems to think it's because of caffeine.

Yeah, they worked really great for me. After I used them for the recommended 2 weeks, my math teacher told me I had the whitest teeth she's ever seen.

As the box says though, your teeth will probably start coloring again after 6 months, but two boxes a year ain't bad. Of course, I have braces now, so I can't use them anymore, but my SoniCare works just as well. :D

No coffee. I have been doing this for some time now though. I can really tell that those teeth are not as long as they used to be. The wife has caught me doing it in my sleep too so I know for sure that it's still going on.

I don't feel like I have a lot of stress either. Just seems to be something I do when I'm asleep.

Doesnt having a mouthguard in your mouth whilst you sleep inhibit your ability to breath through your mouth?

Ever hear of brushing your teeth? How come no-one does that?

be careful danoff that your 99c mouth guard doesnt disjoint or disfigure your jaw or do any long term damage to you bones and teeth as you sleep...you wont know this 'til after 6 months of use.....thats the supposed reason why they charge such an astronomical price for a piece of moulded plastic..

still though, $500 is a rip off....but thats ergonomics for you.

I have a mouthguard for soccer (goalies are required to wear them in our league), I bought it for like $5 but its really comfortable because its one of the ones you heat up in hot water and then bite into so it fits to your mouth.

 I play soccer, and I have played in goals, but a mouth guard for soccer is abit much!?
I have a special gumsheild for rugby as I have braces. It covers top and bottom teeth.

Id wear one anyway, cos I have braces and its actually easier for you to damage them but you dont notice immediatly. When Im not in goals I dont wear it.

wuss!

or you could try the traditional approach and stop the ball with your hands instead of your face...

This is a good point and one I'm on the lookout for. I cut off the back portion and the top so that it's a little less bulky. It's moulded to my teeth so I'm hoping that it won't cause my teeth to shift. I assume that that would be accompanied by some mouth pain as is the case with braces. I haven't had any pain so far.

4 out of 5 doctors say that you should spend the 500 dollars.

The other doctor says you should spend 750.

How do you hide a $50 bill from an anaesthetist?
Place it on the patients' ECG.

How do you hide a $50 bill from a general surgeon?
Put it in the patient notes.

How do you hide a $50 bill from a plastic surgeon?
You can't hide a $50 bill from a plastic surgeon.

Four doctors go duck hunting - a GP, a psychologist, a general surgeon and a pathologist. They wade into the marshes and wait for the ducks to fly. Suddenly, a flock of ducks swoops out of the reeds - the GP holds his gun aloft, pauses and lowers it again.
"What happened there?" say the other three.
"Well, I wasn't sure that they were ducks..."

The four wait a bit more, and another flock ascends skywards - the psychologist lifts his shotgun... hesitates and lowers it again.
"What gives?" say the other three.
"Well," he says. "I wasn't sure that THEY were sure that they were ducks."

So they wait a bit more, and a flock of ducks heads out of the reeds at full tilt. The general surgeon lifts his shotgun and starts blasting anything that moves until he's out of cartridges.

He turns to the pathologist and says
"Were they ducks?"

I'm out.

The dentist told me that when I was grinding my teeth I should notice that I wake up with a headache on my temples (sp?). After he mentioned it, I noticed that I was getting that headache in the mornings.

I'm having that headache now, I wonder if this thing isn't moving my teeth. I'll give it a little while longer but if the headaches persist I'll move to the 25 dollar mouthpeice that's supposed to be specifically for teeth grinding.

(just thought you guys might like an update)

the cause of teeth grinding is unclear...my wife ground her teeth when she slept for about two months then it stopped and never came back...

perhaps its stress in her job or some other pshycological reason..

i wouldnt get the mouth piece straight away...i would wait and see if the grinding subsides and disappears..
