Is this a good first car?

A) When the cars are tiny it's more practical to have a hatchback. The trunk of a Yaris sedan would be tiny while a hatchback is useable. Not as big a deal with bigger cars, as even the trunk in a Corolla is useable.

B) Hatchbacks don't seem to be hated as much as a body style as they are in North America so there's more used ones around.

^ This.

Plus, hatchbacks are a bit smaller than the usual notchbacks (the Corolla springs to mind), which, for a new driver, is more ideal, especially in Britain with its small roads and tight car parks. Basically eliminates any worries of dinging the boot/trunk since it's virtually flat when looking out the back.

I guess its just a cultural thing. Me and my friends have had many a discussion about why Americans buy pick-up trucks as first cars - we can't see the appeal because we've never seen the need for the uses they provide. Conversely, I guess a hatchback would be seen as impractical, possibly even unsafe over there, hence why they seem strange as first cars.

Some people use them, I just think they're ugly. Though some recent notchbacks aren't much better, sporting a tall, narrow look that improves headroom at the price of making the car gag reflex inducing.

My family had a basic on those when I was very young(memories  )love these little things, from what I remember it was very reliable and comfortable.
