After watching the south park episode and hearing some of the kids talk non stop about this game, I thought to myself and though "why"? They spend so much time doing things in that game that I don't even remember. So what your opinion on this?

I can vouch that WoW is definately very addictive. I started playing last week. Got my own account this past Saturday and I've played nearly 12 hours a day every day since then. But is it life ruining? Not if you don't let it. Anything can be life ruining if you let it.

Exactly, it is very addicitve, and just like anything addictive, it can be over addicting and you will spend all of you time on it. I think its pointless if you ask me...

It's just a video game. Gran Turismo can be just as addicting as WoW if you let it. Ultimately it's the person who is playing that makes the decision to let themselves become addicted to the game or not.

I know a couple of friends that play WOW and its true. The game is severly addictive especially since you have to pay $20.00 a month to play it online. If it wasnt that price per month I would have bought the game but I am already paying for xbox live so I did not want to get hooked on a PC game.
xbox live is only about $4.00 a month. Much more reasonable.
Any games like this where you can level up characters are addictive to me. Just like Gauntlet Dark Legacy. One of the best hack and slash games I have ever played. My girlfriend has been playing Ninety Nine Nights and sais it is also severly addictive. I will be buying 99 nights today or tomorrow.

Since when do people take South Park comedy for fact? :P

It's only as addicting as the person who plays it makes it. The game is set up so that before you reach level 60, you don't have to be online for more than 10-20 minutes at a time to make good progress. Only when you reach 60 you will have to choose between this loose style of rep questing, or a more time consuming raid schedule (4 to 6 hours at a time, once or twice a week). It's still managable though, no one is forcing you to keep playing for that long.

Also, CAMAROBOY69, it's not 20$ a month, but 14 or 15 (12,99 Euro here). That's pretty much the norm for MMO's, most companies need that kind of income to keep the massive servers running and keep 100+ people fed to keep developing things for the game as it goes on, the game masters to keep people in check, etc - You might be looking at hundreds, maybe thousands of people for one game just to keep it running 24/7.

Xbox Live is just running on a master server like setup (like the master servers you connect to to get server lists in game like CS, UT or Quake), and provides content at a one time basis (you just download it once and it's done) - the requirements on what the servers actually need is a lot lower, for example, there are at the very msot 5 people working at actually developing xbox live, and no moderators (game masters) are needed to regulate gameplay. Everything is automated.
