Having thoroughly enjoyed GT Academy, me and my friend have been having a competition to see who can get the faster times.

He uses X and Square, i use R2 + L2.

He has beaten me in all 40 events!!!! I am no slouch when it comes to GT5 and other racing games.

What do you think? Or do you think im just rubbish?

R2 and L2 are more precise for careful acceleration and braking but X and [] are faster (for me anyway). It depends on the individual though.

I find it really tricky to accelerate smoothly with the R2 button. Especially with the 370Z which just powerslides straight away

Guess i need to save up for a wheel!

Totally down to the user, use what ever you feel most comfortable with.

I use R1 + L1 for my breaking & accerlation on GT5 but I use R2 + L2 on other racing games.

As I say use what ever you feel most comfortable with :)

I personally use the analogue sticks myself and find this the easiest

I'd have the see the two in a race. Which has more horsepower? /bad joke. No, seriously, its the setup which works best for you. Testing your style is the only way to know the answer. Sorry to get philosophical but everyone will drive slightly differently with the same exact settings. Personally, I find the R2/L2 easier to control the throttle. With my thumb on x or square i'd have to fully release the throttle abruptly to accelerate or brake. This causes a loss of traction in most cases.

It might depend on what driving aids you use.

I have a wheel but don't get much time on it, and use DS3 a fair bit.

I changed from x square to the triggers a while ago and found my DS time became much closer to wheel times. Just better control on gas and brakes.

I always avoided TC on most cars and now have moved to no ABS. Almost impossible using buttons..

I just have to say this: X + Square faster than R2 + L2
At first glance I thought it was a math problem

Are you both using the same transmission (automatic or manual)
I use.
  • Right Analog stick (Up) for throttle
  • R2 for brakes
  • L2 for upshift
  • L1 for downshift

X+Square -R2 to the power of L2 = AWESOMESAUCE. haha. cool setup btw.
EDIT: manual Transmission

As many have echoed, it depends entirely on the skill/muscle memory/comfort level of the user. I cannot for the life of me do anywhere near as good with L2/R2 throttle/brake as I can with face buttons, or even as good as I can with the throttle mapped to the right stick.

I see one major flaw in this test....... Have your friend use L2 and R2 and You use square and X. Then see who wins then. If he beats you, then hes just the better driver.

I myself find, that if I place my thumb in such a position on the X button, I can press the brake and get nearly max braking about 85 to 95% braking force, and still be able to control the car quite well. It almost like braking and using the gas at the same time.

I just started using L2 and R2 and I could see a huge improvement on my times. It's more precise and it helps when your car has a lot of wheelspin.

But it's totally up to the user, some people are just better off with other configurations.

My setup:
L2 Brake
R2 Accelerate
L1 Reverse
Right Stick Shifting

+1.

Right stick for accel brake since GT2... just wish to be able to config every game like that. Playing TDU2 with R2 and L2 are a bugger.

X and Square while using the D-pad for steering. When I was a kid we didn't have these fancy analog sticks and I'm still not used to them on the PS3. The 360's fine though.

I tired using L2 and R2 and I can't see myself getting used to it. I'm just to accustomed to X and Square. If the L2 and R2 buttons were going outward like with the Xbox controller that is a different story.

I'm faster with R2 L2. I played with X - Square since the first gt.
Used that in gt5 too, a friend told me to try r2 l2 setup but i was just too used to the old style controls.
I decided to try it after some months and now i can't go back, i feel even more comfortable than before. ..I tryed the stick too but that's definitely not for me.
I use the right stick as second option for shifting, my first one is circle for gear up and x for gear down. Better for my hand.

I'll always prefer square and x. It's a little harder to keep the throttle smooth, but the triggers on the DS3 are just too squishy and undefined towards the end of the press for me.

The wheel wont make it easier.I thought I was better or just as good with the wheel than the controller before GTA.I was a full 2 seconds slower on 8-5 using a wheel.
I tried using X and square but I couldnt get used to it.Im kinda good turning with the D-pad.

I'm half way between both camps on this. I started out with x & square way back with GT1 & 2 but found when I returned to GT5 that X acceleration was too much like an on/off switch especially as I never use traction control. So now I've taught myself to use R2 for gas but I'm still struggling to use anything other than square to brake! I need to work on this though cos I'm still stuck using automatic transmission cos I can't find a set up that I'm comfortable with that combines my way of braking & accelerating with manual gear shifts. Practise makes perfect I guess.

The problem I have with R2L2 is that your hand cramps up after a while since the position is so awkward when you're pressing down on them hard...

This is what I use when I don't use my wheel. On the PS1&2 I used face buttons all the time but moved away from that when prologue came out. I went to L2 & R2. I seem to push to hard on the face buttons to actually feather the throttle as precise.

I have made a bit of progress , ive beaten him in a few events now. I think he messed around with the settings such as Traction Control and ABS.
On Gran Turismo 4, i used X and Square all the time, but when PS3 came out, F1 Championship Edition used R2 and L2 as standard, and i got used to that,as they improved the buttons so they were like triggers rather than buttons.

The $hitbox controls are crap... if you want precise gas and brake, use the right analog stick. it takes some getting used to, but I've been doing that since Gt3. I just recently acquired a wheel and you can be faster, but the button mashers can be just as fast.

I don't like using R2 and L2, as my fingers tend to slip. I wish the DS3 had better grip on the trigger buttons.

Analogue Sticks are the best input method for the GT games since the first GT.

Also, I would heavily recommend investing into DualShock2 USB converter - where you can use Dualshock 2 PS2 controller on the PS3 - in order to take advantage of much stiffer analogue sticks of DS2 compared to DS3 (or Sixaxis).

Left stick for steering, right stick for acceleration/brake.
L2 + R2 for manual gearing.

BUt everyone to his own.

X and [] will have to use TRC and ABS. so basically its just easy driving with those aids.

IF R2 L2 guy doesnt use TRC and ABS he would be at a loss since it takes more skill to control the car.

if R2L2 guy uses trc and abs, then there is no difference between X[] and R2L2. or any point to using R2L2. hes just a lesser skilled driver

I use X & square, it's the easiest to me. If I can stay calm during the race I can use the pressure sensitivity in the button pretty well for partial throttle/brake.

In my opinion r2 l2 is much better for racing and especially drifting all the top drifters I know use r2 l2 mainly because you have a lot more acc controll with r2 and better breaking controll with l2 and most use x and square as gear up n gear down and you say r2 l2 drivers are less skilled cant see any reason for this
