Is X + Square faster than R2 + L2 ?

Also, I would heavily recommend investing into DualShock2 USB converter - where you can use Dualshock 2 PS2 controller on the PS3 - in order to take advantage of much stiffer analogue sticks of DS2 compared to DS3 (or Sixaxis).

I can vouch for this, but will add that if you do want to go that route, make sure you buy a newer design. The older, launch-era PS2 adapters (which most of them are) may or may not work anymore due to a couple firmware updates.
 
I'm more comfortable using R2/L2. I think it's because of giving FM2 a go and stuff, and then I got a little used to the XB360 controller.
 
I can modulate the brakes and acceleration very well using the right analog stick, the left stick is for steering. Rubber thumbstick grip pads (grip-it or kontrolfreek) allow especially fine control, they work great as long as my thumbs stay clean and not sweaty LOL! Not as precise as a wheel, but it's very very good. L2=shift down, R2=shift up.
 
I use R2/L2, shift with the right stick. I always used X and [] since the old days of GT1, but I've been playing on my cousin's Xbox a lot so i started getting used to the trigger system and so later on when i got my PS3 and GT5 I started using R2/L2, It's not 100% precise but is way better than nothing.

My father still play with X and [], and still he can beat me sometimes. So it's all about what the player is used.
 
I use the L2 R2 combo, ever since I started playing Forza 2. If you have issues with fingers slipping off triggers you can get little clip on triggers that come down. Only problem is that it feels like your're hitting the stop of the trigger before you hit the stop of the button, works well for other games but haven't tried it on GT5 yet

In my opinion r2 l2 is much better for racing and especially drifting all the top drifters I know use r2 l2 mainly because you have a lot more acc controll with r2 and better breaking controll with l2 and most use x and square as gear up n gear down and you say r2 l2 drivers are less skilled cant see any reason for this

the only point to using l2R2 is not using trc and abs, so you can control the amount of throttle and brakes. if one racer has them on, he is obviously at an advantage.

The op uses L2 R2 and loses to X []. If both use trc and abs, X [] and L2 R2 are pretty much the same. so if he loses, hes just lesser skilled.

X [] guy obviously uses aids.

thats all im saying.

I use X for my throttle and only use ABS 1 and sometimes TCS 1 if im in an LMP or Zonda R. It's all about feel, and once you get good at throttle control with the X button, you're fine. I do believe that the L2 R2 combination is better with pracrice, but it feels so strange to me as I grew up playing GT4 on a DS2 that I can never swich. I tried it one time and tried to use X to accelerate, remembering after how I had switched the controls. :dopey:
 
I pretty much copied the controls from GTA IV, and I find it MUCH better. R2 accelerates, L2 brakes, R1 handbrakes, L1 breaks out my window and lets me shoot out other driver's tires. The R2/L2 is a much better experience than X/Square imo.
 
This reminds me during my GT4 times.. The X and Square buttons are worn out due to a lot of fighting games so that I have to press X a little hard to ge full throttle.
This came with benefit though.. I could maintain throttle control better due to pressure applied to the buttons (yes theres a tiny movement but the pressure is much different)

Never use L2 R2 combo eversince.
 
Real Triggers are a great $5 accessory for R2/L2. I know the face buttons are pressure sensitive, but not enough IMO. Way too much like digital on/off to be any use for me.

It took me a long time to ween off the sticks to use R2/L2.
 
I personally just don't like the feeling of using L2/R2. I feel much more comfortable using X and []. But then again I'm weird and use the d-pad to steer too instead if the stick. And I use no assists (other than ABS set to 1). I consider myself to be a decent driver. Not awesome, but decent. I think if I knew how to tune cars, I'd be better. And I've tried using the L2/R2 combo in various racing demos, and I seem to be terrible at those.

So to sum it up, I imagine I would probably be better off using the L2/R2 combo if I ever got used to using them. But the X and [] and d-pad are so ingrained into my brain that it's the only way I can play right now. But I would love to get a wheel. Even if I was a little slower, I feel it would be more fun. Of course that will be a ways off for me after recently having surgery on my spine. I'm currently reteaching my legs to walk again. And the sensation in my right leg is very little and will take a long time to come back (why couldn't it be my left leg?).:irked: At least I can still use a controller. :dopey:
 
might be a bit strange but I use R2 for accel and Square for brakes, feels a bit better for me and its definitely quicker for me.
 
Both are slower than using the right analog. Obviously the analog gives you much more precise control, and it's faster for the same reason wheels are faster than controllers. Precision in racing counts for a lot. Smooth=Fast

There's a large difference. The resolution (may be the wrong word) of the sticks is much higher than the triggers. I don't know the exact number but the sticks are definitely much more precise.
 
i use the right joystick for my acceleration/breaking (i guess the r3 joystick?)
i love it, as i can quickly snap back and for between acceleration and breaking with just my thumb
 
I use L2 for breaks and R2 for gas. L1 is reverse and R1 is e-break. My right analog is my shifting and my left analog is for steering. I find this the best setup for myself as its smooth for me. I'm not moving my fingers around crazy to get to buttons and I can do combinations that I find no other button setup to be able to do.

Jut because there's more room to push the stick doesn't mean it's better (seems about the same as the trigger for me anyway) The triggers are more stiff than the sticks, so it's easier to pick the spot you want them at and hold them there. The sticks are alot more loose than they were on the DS2 so it's harder to be more precise with them.
 
I use L2 for braking, R2 for acceleration, X for handbrake, square for shift down, circle shift up, triangle does something... maybe headlights?? click in left for horn, click in right for wipers, L1 or select for view, R1 for look back. I feel as if I have more control over accel and braking with R2 & L2. Whatever feels right for you though, just go with it.
