Its Been A Long Time Waiting GIF

Or so it seems. :D

I thought I’d give GT five again as it’s been over a decade since I drove it, but an hour later I’m still waiting for the PlayStation and GT to update. This is what happens when you haven’t turned on the console in three years.

As a GT seven user what should I expect of GT five. I honestly don’t remember what it was like playing at last?

After about two hours of software updates it finally loaded. Now I’ve got GT overload. I’m also glad I didn’t sell my old playseat and G29 as that works a treat on GT5 on the PS3.

Meanwhile, all my Fanatec gear and VR is on the small screen off to the side. But I never look at the small screen anymore lol

Welcome back. Make sure you have the HSV-010 in your garage, it's a great-sounding car that handles well with the G29. Also, try out Toscana too, I've been dying for the one featured in Course Maker to return to the GT franchise with its full Italian time-transitioning and landscaped glory; the Dirt track was good too.

The same feeling, but on inferior physics and graphics. One distinct feeling I had driving high-powered cars was that they felt kinda detached from the road while using a wheel compared to GTS/7, in the sense that they are very easy to go off-track and the wheel does not have enough sensitivity(?) to let you countersteer at just the right amount.

That's a very fortunate thing that you still kept your Playseat and Logitech G29, because I think it's the only Logitech wheel (or even from any brand, really) that still supports major racing games released in the Playstation console family counting from the PS3 onwards, and yet also handles great. My G29's pedals have their wiring malfunctioning, so I got a Thrustmaster T300 RS as replacement without fixing the G29. The T300 RS is decent on PS5's GT7, although it's still inferior to the G29 on that game to me. But, I don't know if I've said this before on the 'Planet, even though it supports the PS3 as well, the T300 RS does NOT handle anywhere near as good as the G29, at least in GT5, the only PS3 game I've tried both wheels on. You might do okay with an underpowered car, but once you go to try a high-powered car at a twisty circuit (like Super GT cars at the Nordschleife), it handles terribly, because there is hardly any force feedback perceptible in your hands. And IIRC there is no option to adjust the FFB strength in GT5, or at least such an option has no impact on the actual strength delivered on a T300 RS.

There may be another wheel made by a different manufacturer that can do PS3+4+5 games with decent feeling and haptic feedback, but AFAIK, the G29 is the only option (and your safest bet). So keep it if you intend to keep on playing GT5 with a wheel.

I realized that the grip/handling feels more arcade and less nuanced that GT7.

That’s alright though as the G29 feels like a toy compared to the direct drive.

I’d forgotten how good GT5 was for such an old game now. I’m having a lot of fun rediscovering some of the old classic tracks; Tracks I missed like London. I really wish we had more city tracks in GT7.

Also I found the kart tracks really fun. Again it would be good to have some small tracks for karting in GT7.

I’m just getting back into single player as I’ve lost all my previous play so I’ve started completely from zero. The license test seem harder than GT7 as well. And of course it’s an adjustment getting back to flatscreen mode from VR. But it’s good to have this going again.

It's the last GT with hard licence tests. Also the only GT besides the first three where the AI have any semblance of intelligence, given they actually make some means of attempt to not ram the **** out of you.

If anything, it's probably the last 'true' Gran Turismo. Later games seemingly had a lot of executive meddling from Sony to the point the actual campaign experience became overwhelmingly diluted...

There's several more tucked away in the files as well that they never used for some reason. Midfield, Apricot Hill, Grand Canyon, El Capitan, Seattle, Hong Kong, Infineon Raceway, Citta di Aria (amusingly, with nothing but spectators, a skybox and collision data), heavily broken versions of Complex String and Smokey Mountain North and even Pikes Peak from GT2 come to mind... that last one was supposedly meant to be remodeled for an update but it never came to fruition.

To not be able to buy cars you like when you want or when they are available, because they're locked behind a player level wall and one that is vital to progress is also stuffed into a several-lifetimes rotating used car dealer - in what's the two worst pieces of GT game design in the series' entire history, with the latter rectified when the game was online by the online car dealer but which is no longer available.

If you're not in luck, the only way to get that car - the Formula GT - is by the Level 24 Ticket, which contains three cars but you can use the old save-reload trick until you get the right one.

The third-worst piece of GT game design in the series' entire history is single-use paint chips for the brand new paint shop, combined with a paid DLC paint chip pack (now unavailable too). And that's in GT5 too.

Wouldn't it be cool if these games had easter eggs where, after you complete the game (or certain points in the game), you unlock classic mode where you could access prior game content in all its low res' glory. I really wish we could access the GT5 and earlier tracks in GT7 using a "classic" mode.

Alas it'll never happen.
