It Doesn't Matter Where You Sit...

///M-Spec
There aren't many movies I will see at the theater anymore. My home theater is at the point now where I perfer to wait for the DVD unless its a really hot movie. The only other time is when the wife and I need to "escape" parenthood for a couple of hours and we take in something on Sunday night.
That's what I thought. If there is a crying kid, people making out, etc., at least (1) you know who it is and (2) there is a pause and a rewind button on the DVD player. And closed caption. Or subtitles, depending on the movie.

Another thing that really annoys the h*** out of me is the one person in the theatre who laughs at the stupidest parts and not only that they laugh so everyone in every theatre can hear them and then they talk to the peron next to them about how funny it was. Oh and when people say whatever current catchphrase is going around really loud like gittter done or what Yeah! Okay! i cant stand that either.

The last time I went to the movies, about 12 years ago or so, two black guys got in a gun fight. One lost.

I've never been to a movie thearter since then, and I don't miss it. I never liked the movie theaters anyway. All those people smacking and crunching on their popcorn at the same time drove me crazy. Seriously, the next time you guys are in the theater, listen for it.

You remember the opening theater day of a movie that came out 6 years ago? :odd:

Yes, of course I do. I'm sure you remember things that happened 6 or more years ago. I'm 28 years old. So six years isn't that long for me. :sly:

Besides, don't we always remember the best and worst experiences in life? I bet you can think of your best and worst school teacher right now without thinking about it. Or your favoirte and most hated food. It's not that big of a deal.

I took my wife to see "Ever After" back in the summer 1998. There were about 10 people in the theater. Okay, fine...at least it will be quiet if I'm going to see a movie I'm not thrilled about seeing.

Half-way through, a bunch of kids start giggling and chattering through the movie. 100 seats, they chose the ones behind me. Nice... They talk on their cell phones, they start to be louder than the movie. Now it's getting loud enough that I can hear everything they are saying. It turns out that someone works at that cinema, and so they sneaked their buddies in.

With about 20 minutes to go, I'd had it. It didn't matter that I didn't care for the movie. Principle mattered now. I quickly stood up, turned around (you look tall when they're sitting), and shouted at them "SHUT THE *UCK UP AND GET THE HELL OUT OF MY MOVIE!" They ran out of the movie like a rats departing a sinking ship, howling!

Never before has a chick-flick got my blood flowing so fast and so quickly!

On the other hand, I basically have to plead with my wife to go to the movies anymore; she thinks I'm going to lose my life in a theater parking lot one day.

My friends and I made a couple of older people get up and change seats. We were pretty loudly making fun of the trailers before (X-Men 2 I think). They turned around, gave us an annoyed look and moved.

Christ! We were quiet during the movie. Who the hell cares if you talk during the trailers?

Some people really enjoy the trailers.

Last weekend I went to see "The increadibles" and the lady behind us was full on talking to her son during the movie. Like as though no movie were happening and nobody was around trying to listen to it. We both turned around and stared her down for a good 30 seconds. But even after that she let a few phrases out in normal voice tone, despite the fact that her kids were whispering and trying to be polite.

Going to the movies sucks.

I can't front. I rag on trailers. That's part of the fun for me.

Honestly, I could completly do without trailers and of course the commercials that are shamelessly put in front of the movie.

Most trailers are so weak and overdone anyway. If someone gets mad at talking through the trailers, they need to get over themselves. Go home and download it. You can get almost every trailer in hte movies from the movie's website. So what's the big deal? It's just a preview anyway.

Well, this sounds like YOU are trying to dictate where and when it is polite to talk during a movie. When someone pays $10.00 for a ticket, they are entitled to silence from the moment the first image appears on the screen.

Some people come specifically to movies for trailers, such as when new Star Wars trailers or Spider-Man trailers are appearing for the first time. Downloading something and then watching it on your computer will never be the same as seeing it on the big screen. If you insist on talking through the trailers, either wait outside until they're finished, or download them and watch them with your friends at home so you can "rag on them" there.

The movie theatre is a public place and no one person gets to dictate what is and is not acceptable. The majority of people believe that talking during ANY part of the movie, trailers or otherwise, is unacceptable, so you either have to comply with these rules or get the **** out of Dodge, OR you'll just have to take whatever dirty looks and complaints are doled out.

"It's a baby, they're supposed to cry"

Ripped out of context but this gave me the best laugh of today.

Reasoning like that can justify almost anything. Imagine what other stuff they might do to their kid.

Hey, why are you trippin so hard? You act like I sit on my cell phone describing what happened in a trailer to my freind and he's telling me what's going on in the theatre next door.

You're right. We ALL paid 10$ to get in. When I talk during trailers, I don't yell or even talk at a regular voice. Just under my breath to a friend sitting next to me. So relax.

I hate to be a jerk but:

Then why are you dictating to me? Honestly, I thought we pretty much shared the same views as far as this subject goes. But it seems that I might be wrong.

I never complained about dirty looks or anything like that. But it's fun to rag on trailers. and if a person pays 10$ to see a 2 minute trailier one time, they have deeper issues then someone whispering to his friend.

Excellent point!

Swift, I'm not dictating to you, I'm dictating on behalf of the entire society. It's a majority rules situation.

You said you like to rag during trailers, what's the big deal? I told you.

How am I supposed to deduce from your original post that you only whisper to a friend next to you and don't talk out loud? What the hell does it mean to "rag" on a trailer anyway? And whispering is JUST AS ANNOYING as talking if someone's doing it right behind you.

The point of this entire thread was to open people's eyes to the state of affairs in movie theatres across North America. There is an etiquette, a set of rules, but some people choose not to follow them, and virtually no one has the power to enforce them with any real conviction.

Me too. It depends on how many other people are talking too. I never remember the movies advertised; back when I was a kid, it was for a movie coming out in a month or two. Now you get shamless ads for movies that haven't even casted actors yet.

If the crowd is still at a dull roar, I talk or wisper to my wife somthing like, "So it's a cross between The Horse Wisperer and Seven Samurai with the guy from that one-word-titled action moive and the lady with the funny nose in that other flick? Who is going to see that?

Better still, are the people who have "saved" seats for seven imaginary people who "aren't here yet", leaving you with seats right infornt of the screen. During the trailers before Jackie Brown, I had the balls to go back to those same seats with my friends, and tell the joker "Well, the movie's started...we're taking their seats."

Good point, how could you deduce that. You couldn't and I should have been more clear.

Whispering everyone does period. I'm sure you do it as well. And as long as it's not a chronic problem, I don't mind it.

Of course there are a set of rules. But since I paid my money I have a say in the rules. I saw, during trailers if it's really dumb, I'm going to make a comment to my friend. I'm not going to sit there and make sure I'm not breathing too loud. Sure, it's good to have quiet. But there is a fine line between audience reaction and audience distractions.

This is why I usually only go to midnight or very late showings. Cause those people come to see the movie. Not entertain each during it. I highly reccomend that for any big movies that you really want to enjoy in the theatre. That way, you don't have to deal with babies, irresponsible parents, little kids or teeny boppers 💡

Quite the contrary here; I feel the theaters are quieter during the afternoons.

I saw both Star Wars (I and II) releases at 10am in the morning, and a 12 noon showing of LOTR: Return of the King. Perfectly nice and quiet.

Unfortunatley, few movies are ever shown at that time...

That's a good point. But that's usually on weekdays right?

Well the only problem I have with seeing a movie during the afternoon is that there aren't many people in there. If I've been waiting for months to see The Return Of The King, for example, I want to see it in a full house, because the audience does add magic to the experience. Granted, I have to put up with the crap that goes with a large audience, which is what I am contesting with this thread.

Second, where I live we don't have any movies showing past 10:30pm ANYWHERE anymore, which sucks but what can you do?

My solution has been to wait until a movie has been out for a week to go see it, if it's not a blockbuster. The problem is that I usually only go to the theatre to see movies I have been dying to see, so I don't go much to see things just for the hell of it.

Well my friend. You can't have it both ways. Either your going to have a lot of people and stuff annoying you. Or hardly anyone and loose the "atmosphere" of a full house. So, I guess that's where your dilemma comes in huh?

Yup, hence the futility in the thread title...it could also be called "It doesn't matter when you go..."

I would agree with that. Except for the midnight showings. Only fanatics like myself go to movies at midnight!
