or maybe a superb 2.5tdi

Too bad we don't get that Audi diesel over here...quite a handsome car with good MPG.

I wouldn't count Diesel power out in the US, as it has become quite popular here. Check and see what happens over the next few months after the 2007 regulations go into effect, and see where crude prices go, and we may eventually see a flood of diesel comming to the US market.

...GM says they will have three new diesel engines ready by 2010, including a new I4, V6, and a V8 as well...

Just a quick update.

We are getting a test drive in one tomorrow, in a CRD Touring version - shouldn't be any different to the Saloon other than more wind noise in the back because of the extra windows and slightly more sloppy handling, like that matters to Dad anyway.

Dad is 100% just sticking with the 300 now too. Any other car just doesn't look like it on the road, and that is its main appeal to him. If we dislike the car, we keep with what we have already, simple. I feel convincing him to look at other cars is impossible now after going through so many pictures of it earlier tonight!

If we like it, we (I predict he won't resist the urge) probably will go ahead with buying one, probably one of the auctioned ones with 1,000 miles on them coming in in the next few days. Dad's going to haggle hard to get a good offer too, thanks to the haggling programme he saw this morning. That'll be interesting...

I'll let you know what we do as soon as we get back, and knowing me, a detailed report on what the car was like.

Not a bad decision.

Were you watching the program on at about 9-9:30 with the shaved head bloke?
Yes. Dominic someone...

I like those. The only thing is, the seats hurt my butt. Since his parents are upgrading from a Jag, i think it might be a little harsh :p

I don't know what the new ones are like, though. I'm judging this on the previous gen standard models.

Well, this turned out to be an interesting trip.

Our first impressions were the car was MASSIVE. Seriously, even the tyres were. We quickly looked inside and in the boot and found that the car was actualy OK quality-wise, like shutting the door gave a quality thump.

We met up with the salesman (who looks like daan!) and said that there is a saloon version available to test drive, just with the extra sat-nav on it. We got in, and it was so comfortable! The seats were very well padded and there was lots of legroom.

On the test drive was what impressed me best. It was actualy very quiet, quieter than our Jag and the suspension wasn't as clashy as I was expecting. It was a bit more choppy on the motorway and around town, but over larger bumps and speedbumps, it was actualy better than we're used to. The thing that shocked me most was the performance. On paper, it says the Jag and the 300 are the same figures acceleration-wise, but it was in a different legue! Dad floored it up a hill and you almost had to literally hang on! He said it reminded him a little bit of the turboed Sigma he had many years ago. The only thing we didn't like, well, Mum didn't like, was she felt a little claustrophobic because of the size of it and the higher windows. She was sitting in the middle in the back at first, which had a funny seat belt which didn't help, then got her to sit in the front and felt a little better.

After all of this though, we didn't go for the car. We got offered only £7,400 for the Jag, £7,500 after some pushing, maybe more if we let the dealer ring a few other people. We were expecting this, but we didn't expect our car was averaging a price drop of £600 per month, so even if we went for the car with the Sat Nav in it now, waiting another 5 months for a new one to save £3000 we'd still have to pay out the same amount of money because of depreciation. It just isn't worth it. It's a shame, because I loved the car, so did Dad, brother and Mum too.

I've taken some photos too, but I'll upload and sort them all out later.

3.0 V6 CRD diesel, Mercedes-sourced.

You only knew it was a diesel at idle and at very low speeds...

Tried an XJ greasel?
Good point. Technically, if he likes what we have now, he'd like that more, but before he said he doesn't like the looks of it. :odd:

He doesn't like the looks of the XJ? What is he, gay or something?

For reference, my dad has just bought a black Jaguar S-Type R...

My dad >>> your dad.

Poverty
lol at the gay comment. So what cars next on the list?
None, if you're talking to me. He's just not interested in anything anymore (yes, not even Audis ;)).

Black S-Type-R? If I remember correctly, your Dad doesn't even drive quickly? :sly:

My dad is a former amateur rally driver, and about the only person I will let drive me anywhere.

He's gone for the S-Type R after he's had his S-Type 3.0SE for a year, because it's just not quick enough. One supercharged 4.2 litre V8 later...

Nope. He's good and quick, despite being old. He doesn't get het up behind the wheel much, but that's kind of the point of Jaguars (as I was conveying to Doug). Now if he DOES he can do something about it... :D It's a 400hp living room...

Seriously, I'd been over 125mph nearly every week of my life until I got my own driving licence. Oddly, he's never been pulled for speeding.

Famine's family tree would have to be awesome, wouldn't it :D

So your dad isn't changing now, then?

Do not listen to the car magazines, just tell your dad to take test drives with the cars before choosing 👍
Yes, exactly. Magazines aren't always right. We have to try out the cars for ourselves to know if we like them, like the S-Type/X-Type situation last year.

This is the Touring version that we originally meant to test drive:

The showroom car:

The only rushed picture I took of the car we actualy test drove. I would have taken more of it, but I forgot:

A few of the petrol models they can't shift at the moment:
