But rallycross is done on circuits - not on point-to-point stages.
I know, I probably just had confusing wording.

What I meant to say was Gr.B rallycross only has one dirt track/rallycross course (Sardegna) and the other two are tarmac tracks (Big Willow and Tokyo Central Inner).

Gran Turismo 'rally' is always just a wide dirt road, for some reason. I wish they'd drop it and focus on what they do well.

Often, but not always. This track has a pretty good width for rallying:

Anyways, “rally” in Gran Turismo usually refers to a type of car. Dirt/snow tracks are called dirt/snow tracks rather than rally tracks.

The reason for the wide tracks is probably that they are intended for racing rather than rallying. But generally speaking, a lot of their original tracks (regardless of surface) are rather wide.

Doesnt rallycross have some tarmac sections? Or is that just certain forms of rally and we're just mashing it all together now.

Rallycross is short circuit (average of around a mile in length), mixed surface, short duration (4 to 6 laps) races, with a joker section to the laps and a multi race knock out format. Oh and contact is allowed.

Tahiti (GT2, PSP, GT3) and Tahiti Maze (GT3, PSP, GT4; GT2 variant was dirt only), along with Smokey Mountain (GT3; GT2 variant was dirt only).

I must have early onset of dementia as I'd completely forgotten about Tahiti Maze and Smokey Mountain! Still, they're not really rallycross tracks, they're more like mixed surface WRC style courses. Rallycross tracks are a lot shorter and at either temporary purpose built tracks or permanent dedicated/adapted circuits.

Everyone complains that PD have no idea how to do rally and rally cross. I think it's more like they wanted to have rally cars in the game, but they don't want to invest in making a full rally experience as that would impede on what they want to focus on. They throw in a few token dirt tracks so the rally cars don't seem too useless, and then the marketing teams mark it as a selling point when it is actually very limited. This is in GT2 I speak of.

I've had no problem with how PD implemented the rally aspect into the GT games. It was done into the framework of a circuit based game, and to use the rally cars, which a lot of people like, on a loose surface. With Rallycross though, it was playing into their hands, circuit based racing with rally cars on mixed surfaces, which they have done before. I know there is a bit more depth to Rallycross, grid starts, shorter circuits, joker laps, 4-8 cars etc, but all that is stuff they have done before (if we think of a pit stops as joker laps ;)), so no problem doing it again. So to not do that and call it Rallycross was the point of starting the thread. And then to do it on tracks with one type of surface, and two of the three offered being tarmac for the rally cars is baffling.

Now it may be marketing men naming stuff, but surely there must be someone who said this is so much not like Rallycross I don't think we should go there.

It makes you question why you would question PD? When i have already gotten my 50 quids worth (price on day one) of Gran Turismo already.

It's also missing g joker laps, and the circuits are too long for RX.

It's basically PD very odd idea of loose surface racing, nothing more.

No official competition structure either. Eh, I think we're just criticising it for something that it isn't trying to be.

To be honest although I like rally it feels out of place in gt sport, has no reference to reality and it feels like sega rally (which was great back in the day).

Would prefer they put more effort into more race tracks to be honest.
Yup, GT's approach to rally/off-road has always been the same
-make a generic circuit
-add some bumps and elevation changes
-lower the amount of road grip for dirt, more for snow.
Rather than actually model different surfaces, they just cut the amount of grip the track has all over. So different non-tarmac surfaces just feel like ice of varying degrees of slippyness
I agree, i wouldn't care if they dropped rally entirely
If you're gonna do something you should do it right ( like Codemasters does...hahaha)

It makes you question PD when they don't seem to know what Rallycross is.

"Rallycross is a form of sprint style automobile racing held on a closed mixed-surface racing circuit".

They look to have left the mixed circuit part.

How is a race round the normal Willow Springs track with Rally Cars Rallycross? Answers on a postcard. :banghead:

The thing is they have had tracks in the past with tarmac and gravel, so it is not an alien concept to them.

What next, ice racing with no ice!

It will be interesting to see how the most blinkered PD fans try to justify this.

PD did the next best thing and had a race with slicks on a normal track and a race with dirt tires on a dirt track.

So what? I'm sure they're working on mixed surface race tracks and they will come in future updates.

It doesn't take an IQ of 500 to figure it out.

This is a terrible series...

The Tokyo Hwy race is as you'd expect. Mario Kart for GTS.

The Willow Springs race is diabolical with Super Sport tyres and 550 to 600hp 4wd cars with stuff all grip. Any off is race ending.

Sardegna is terrible all round but its actually 'rally' is not 'rallysport' I guess.

If you don't see the problem with PD calling what they have delivered being 'Rallycross', then an 'IQ of 500' may not help. ;)

As for what PD will or will not do in any future updates is pure speculation. If they haven't put mixed surface tracks in a 'Rallycross' update, then I don't see how anyone could have any confidence of them doing it in the future.

I for one don't expect anything from PD, as they seem to plough their own path, take little or no notice of what their competitors do, or what some of their users may want. Seems to work for them so far. Sales and number of online users may determine if they continue in the same manner. ;)

rally, rally cross, dirt, offroad, gravel, snow, ice. it doesn't matter what they call it. in GT it is synonymous with 'sucks'
