I am jaded.

I have bought almost 300 CD's in my day. I own about 100 more copies. But I feel I have nothing to listen to that I haven't heard before, and don't want to listen to anymore.

I am tired of albums with one good song. I am tired of overly distorted noise. I am tired of trite lyrics. I am looking for something with substance, yet won't depress the heck out of me.

I am open to something musically new and...heck, maybe even "different".

Post away. The record companies need me to buy something, as it's been over 9 months since I've bought anything.

I'm only 17 and I'm also sick and tired of the same things you are. That's why I pretty much gave up on the modern music industry years ago.

After reading what you're looking for in music, I would highly recommend Moving Pictures by Rush if you haven't already heard it. Excellent songwriting combined with outstanding musicianship makes for a great album. Otherwise, I'd recommend some of Rush's earlier albums.

I have 400 and something albums. I'm also very bored with music lately. There's nothing good out.

Almost every single one of my albums are Metal or Classic Rock. I don't feel like venturing out of this. I'll just have to wait until the next good album. 👎

When I was collecting all of these albums, it was great. So many things to listen to. Now I've listened to all of them. There's a lot more for me to obtain, but not much of it is that great really.

And I'm 16. So you think being like this at 30 is bad?

I went through the same issue when I was around 25. The last few years I have tried alot harder to find good music and have generally suceeded, though I admit this year there were relatively slim pickings. 2002 and 2003 had much better offerings and diversity. The reason I feel most people get bored with music is that they only look for music in the genres that they grew up with or were 'cool' to listen too in high school. So many people my age (29) still listen to crappy Def Leppard and other hair metal crap. Gee, I wonder why they are sick of it? Perhaps it had no substance whatsoever to begin with? If you are bored wih music, look to diversify your tastes. When you see musicians talk about their influences, thaere are always unexpectd answers, because true musicians respect good music, no matter what others think of it.

Post what style of music or bands you generally listen to, maybe I could give you a suggestion of something a bit different if you like. I'm a big music lover, so I am always willing to talk about it.:)

I know exactly what I like, and I am quite diverse in some ways. Rock, Classic Rock, Metal. I'm really not fussed in these genres.

I don't need any recommendations, as I'm not trapped in the past, or simply narrow-minded. But I do like to stick to these genres, as I'm into heavy and fast, some of the classics, and the occasional good-sounding Rock music.

I doubt you'll find me anything I haven't sampled.

I was talking more to pupik, as you seem to be happy with da metal. I dig me some metal too, but I get sick of it at times. Except for Sabbath. I can never get sick of Sabbath.👍

Two words for you guys: college and radio.

Tune into the local college station. That's all I listen to on the radio. In the course of a day they run through an open-format show (which varies by DJ every day of the week, from '50s oldies to modern oddities), a folk music show, a classical music show, a hiphop show, a classic rock show, an indie show, and a jazz-blues show. I listen to this station and make mental notes about the stuff I like. After I've heard it a few times, and heard some other songs, I'll buy the CD if I still like it. In the past few years I've only bought 1 CD that I didn't like more than one song (The Rapture's Echoes).

Here are some albums I'll recommend off the top of my head if you're looking for something different:

They Might Be Giants - Flood or Factory Showroom.

Beck - Sea Change. I love Odelay too, but lyrically and distortion-wise it might not suit you.

Morphine - Cure For Pain or Like Swimming.

Jimmy Dale Gilmore - Spinning Around The Sun. Yes, it's country - branch out a little.

Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. Ditto.

Love and Rockets - Express or Earth Sun Moon.

The White Stripes - any album, De Stijl being my marginal favorite.

Marilyn Manson. Trust me. I used to listen to 50 Cent, Eminem, wiger me yo this shizzle fo blah blah blah. Pretty good stuff. And no, it's not satan this satan that.

Just visit the "What are You listening to?" thread here and download random songs from it. MAybe you'll find something you like. I mean someone else likes it, so it must have some redeeming qualities.

Franz Ferdinand is cool. Chevelle, Green Day. But then agian, don't really know what you like. But those are what I would pick up. and if you want something energetic, Blink-182 Dude Ranch, or Take Off Your Pants And Jacket.

Franz Ferdinand is really good if you're looking for something different easier on the ears. I highly reccomend them. 👍

Thanks, all.

I find myself listening and borrowing music from before I bought albums. A good deal of it is music made before I was born. I'm starting to enjoy the classic rock station more than the stuff that that's on the mainstream/modern rock station.

I can't stand anything from the rap/R&B stations since about 1993. That avenue is safely closed off; I have enough enjoyable stuff from 1984-1991 to last me until the end of my days.

I find myself listning to the reagae (sp?) and calypso stations on both the radio and satellie TV. It's interestingly slow-paced, a little cheesy, but relaxing to listen to.

I've got my fill of electronic music. The popular stuff really leaves a lot to be desired, and a lot of what I hearby suggestions from freinds is makes me think about how disposable and forgettable the genre is starting to sound.

Maybe a thourough re-listening of all my stuff will weed out the good from the bad, and who knows....maybe I don't need to get a whole lot of new stuff if I still like what I have. It might take me a year to do so, though!

Mr. McShake
Ska. It's all about the Ska.

I thought ska died?:sly:

Anyways, ya I used to listen to rap, like 4 years ago, no I never listen to it, except for a few exceptions like the beastie boys, now I listen to Marilyn Manson, Greenday, Transplants, Rancid, Blink 182, Sum 41, Alexisonfire, Billy Talent and theres probably a few more I left out.

You screamo freak. I hate screamo. No, Marilyn Manson is not screamo. Although he screams a lot, he is not screamo. Sometimes I just wanna sing along in "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" where he goes "FFFFFFF.UCK IT!!!" 4x but then I realise than I'm in school and not alone and just kind of pipe down. Good ol' sound proofed headphones.

How, when every second post in that thread is a Tool song?

I'm thirty too, but since I have very diverse taste in music, I never run out of music to listen to. Currently, my favorites are pop rock like the Killers, Jamie Cullum(jazz?), Maroon 5, Franz Ferdinand and Lenny Kravitz. Classical is a genre that I'm planning to tap into later in my life, and I still don't know much about them. Bach's works are simply amazing though, I enjoy listening to Mozart also.

I recommend exploring little bit, read some reviews and check out the music in a genre you usually don't listen to. When I was twenty, I listened to Classic Rock, Techno, Pop, Alternative Rock, Jazz, etc. I'd never thought I'd be listening to Reggae, Classical, Oldies, Soul/R&B, etc. when I'm thirty.

I forgot, I'm also into collecting 80's music right now(god, I am old).

SKa isn't dead.

I"m going to the "Ska Is Dead Tour" show next month.

Streetlight Manifesto, Voodoo Glowskulls. Good fast ska.

Buy an instrument and "roll your own"
I also recommend hitting one of the record stores near a college and pick up something that seems "absurd" you might be pleasantly suprised.
I got a couple of albums off the $0.50 table. And have enjoyed the heck out of them.
Also look up some oldies like John Prine, and perhaps Lyle Lovett. He has a rather humourous approach to life and his music.

I've kind of been feeling this way lately too. I'm just getting kinda sick of most of my CD's. There are only a few select out of my 150 or so albums that I even listen to any more. My tastes in music have definitely changed over time and I'm beginning to understand that what I like any more has to sound different and preferably very melodic or groovy. Lots of pure musical is even better (without singing). Dredg is a perfect example of a great band I enjoy any more, but unfortunately there aren't many bands out there (that I have found) that sound anything like them or compare to them in my eyes. Almost all modern rock seems to sound the same any more, and I'm getting pretty sick of it.

I've really been wanting to get into some classical music lately but I have no idea where to start since I know nothing about it. Are there any classical listeners here that could recommend some good music? I'm open to any suggestions.

 I can never understand what they are saying in their songs. As for me I listen to everything.

Look for the following composers, in order of ease of listenability: Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, Handel, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky.

Pick an instrument that you like the sound of (e.g. Piano), and then get a "Concerto" for that instrument, which is basically a piece of music for an orchestra but with the featured instrument playing the dominant part.

Alternatively, buy a compilation CD - look for CDs featuring music for commercials. It's largely chocolate-box nonsense, but should give you a taster for which composers you may like.

Incidentally, I think Rachmaninov's second Piano Concerto is the greatest piece of music ever written.

Yikes!

It's not surprising that you're jaded. I think your brief is fairly restrictive. However, I'll toss out a couple of suggestions for you to buy or sample.

Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters: In the dying hours of New Year's Eve became the best selling album of 2004 in the UK. An interesting mix of songs and styles, all of them quite refreshingly different to the main stream.

Keane - Hopes and Fears: No guitars! Piano-led songs are lyrically interesting and lack of guitars makes for a different sound to normal. Most of the album is initially same-y, but grows on you. First track (Somewhere only we know) is without doubt (in my mind) the best single of 2004. Until the dying hours (yada yada) the best selling album of 2004 in the UK.

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head: Probably on the depressing side, but fantastic in every respect.

Death in Vegas - Dead Elvis: Now I've just got Death In Vegas's new album (Satan's Circus), and it's completely different. But Dead Elvis treads very close to being acid jazz. It's soulful and relaxing. Interesting lyrics and great music carry you along on a wave of happiness.

The Chemical Brothers - Come With Us: Only one word required: Energy.

Roger Waters - Radio K.A.O.S.: Again, a little on the depressing side, and ends up a bit mawkish, but the whole album tells quite an interesting story.

DJ Shadow - The Private Press: Funky samples. Some serious rhythm.

So... there's plenty of music out there. If only we could get rid of all the reality-TV bands, and identikit pin-ups peddling half-arsed covers of previously-great songs to salivating children, then we'd be fine.

I am constantly finding new music... I listen to College Radio, and will listen to anything I come in contact with (by any other means), in the slim chance I might enjoy it... I have extremely broad taste in music, so it's not that hard for me to keep my music collection fresh...

;)

I like a little bit of everything but really Greenday's new CD "American Idiot" is well worth the 15 bucks. The songs are good and even though radio and TV is overplaying the songs there are still 16 great songs on this one, a good buy and not to punkish. 👍

Randomness:
-Cheap CD bins.
-Search your file sharing system of choice for .m3u (winamp playlist)
-Search your file sharing system of choice with random/made up words. This works better if you don't mind listning to music in languages you don't speak.

I discover new music all the time. There's no way I'll ever be able to purchase half the music I want.

!!! - Indie rock with some disco/funk/punk. They're similar to The Rapture, but better.

Aberfeldy - Chamber pop with a bit of percussion and some nice acoustic guitars. Nothing special, but you should give them a listen if you find yourself jaded enough.

Battles - Excellent experimental rock. Ian William from Don Caballero really shines as the lead guitarist as does everyone else in the group.

Dungen - Swedish psych-pop. I don't know what the hell the lyrics are, but the arrangements are fantastic. Superb!

Foreign Exchange - An MC from North Carolina and DJ from Hollan make hip-hop like you've never heard.

Half Man Half Biscuit - John Peel likes them and that's good enough for me. Acerbic indie rock with infectious melodies.

Manitoba - From IDM, to UK Garage rock, to 60s indie pop. Every album seems completely different from the last, and every one is equally amazing.

On!Air!Library! - More experimental goodness with a lofi indierock sound.

Richard Cheese - Everyone should own this guy's albums. A lounge singer covering rock and metal songs - what's there not to love?

Uncle Tupelo - Folk rock begins here.

Trashcan Sinatras - Scottish indiepop who remind me a little bit of the Smiths.

I'll see if I can add anything else of value later on.

Check out Pitchforkmedia.com for some reviews on lesserknown bands. Some of the reviews are ridiculous, but overall they're pretty good.

👍

Thanks Giles. I'll look into that stuff you suggested.

I actually saw Scissor Sisters on one of the late-night shows. Their singer was very good, perhaps a little gay, but very good. :) They are definitely different from what I usually listen to but seems like a relief sometimes.
