I'm almost done with college... got two classes this semester one hour every morning and that's it. Probably take one other class at a community college that I need for GE. After that I'll be all done with GE and then it's probably one more semester for the rest of my major. Or if things go better than expected I may not have to take any because I can get them written off or substituted. :D
 
I have to buy stocks for speculation.

I have to buy books for the classes I'll be taking for the Fall 2005 semester.

I have to buy a boost controller for the Brick that way I won't have an excuse to be late for aforementioned Fall 2005 semester classes.

I have to buy a boost gauge to monitor aforementioned boost controller's progress.

That's all I can think of for now. Stocks, books, boost controller, boost gauge...
 
Besides, there are even name brand uniforms now :crazy:, which probably renders half of the advantages of uniforms useless...

Oh yeah! 💡 Without the boost controller, I'm averaging 15 mpg. So with the boost controller that should drop to about 9-10 mpg. :sick:

I need to learn to stay out of boost. It's addictive. OK. Tomorrow on my way to work, I will not engage the turbo unless absolutely necessary. :crazy: Hopefully that'll extend the time between fill-ups.

Famine makes some good points, that are all true for the most part. But try telling a teenager he has to wear the same thing every day. As a student it must be bad, and I'm sure glad I didn't have to wear one. One point for the other side, is that letting kids dress how they want lets them show off individuality and personality. :sly:

Yep - they're so individual that they lump themselves into a dress crowd - jock, geek, fashion queen, goth (and so on) - and their personality gets shaped by it.

Yes, unfortunately that comes with it, and it makes some kids "losers" while others become "popular". But it clearly isn't just about fashion. The kids who don't play sports (how it was for me anyway), talk about Star Wars, Star Trek and such, will still be labeled "geeks", while the kids who are into sports, and anything mainstream will still become popular - just neither of the two will have the clothes to back it up. That's how I see it.

School uniforms are, if you think about it, great.

Firstly, everyone wears the same thing. This means that no kids get picked on for not having the "latest" clothes, and no kids get stressed trying to GET the "latest" clothes.

There's no decisions what to wear the next day.

This is all conducive to why you're actually AT school - to learn things. The less your mind is worrying about social niceties like what you MUST buy because Leanne said to Dawn that Cherise's skirt had a pleat on the left side (Tch!) and Danielle-Michelle-Kerrianne-Leigh and her got in a big fight about it, and Tyler and Kyle saw it and she's mortified because (oooh, spare me)... the MORE your mind is concentrating on things you SHOULD know. Take Einstein - didn't give a rat's about his clothes, won the Nobel Prize. Porked Marilyn Monroe too - take note...

Also, you get used to identifying people by their face, rather than their clothes. So no-one can throw you by wearing an orange shirt one day.


From a parental point of view, THEY don't have to get all stressed buying the kids the "latest" clothes. Whilst uniforms can be expensive to buy initially, kids will get around 2/3 years' wear out of each set, rather than 3 weeks' wear out of a set of clothing which is "in" during February and then "out" in March.

Most of the time, yes, but believe me, it's easy to spot which people aren't so wel off, and they do get picked on, mainly due to the 1000s of holes in their uniforms. And you can see when they wear the same shirt all week, because there will be a large stain in a certain area, or the shirt will be amazingly in need of washing. We only have one person like this in our school, and when they come in on a non uniform day they look remarkably better for some reason. Despite the bad taste in clothes.
 
I'd much rather not have uniforms. Firstly, I can't remember ever seeing a uniform that didn't make the poor kid wearing it look like anything other than someone forced to wear some dorky clothes. All uniforms look the bloody same; white collared shirt, sometimes with a sweater vest over top, with pants/shorts for the boys and a plaid skirt for the girls. I swear they are all the same thing with some very minor variations from school to school. Doesn't really help them develop a sense of style, and more importantly it doesn't help to promote individualism, something which I feel public schools should be much more dedicated towards.

As for promoting groupism, instead of a student body splitting into separate groups based on their clothes (which they still do at uniformed schools, just without their group's own specific dress code), clumping all of the students into one big group based on clothes doesn't seem like a very effective solution to me. Two wrongs don't make a right.

And as for people who get picked on for being poor, as stated before, it will show in a uniformed system anyways. And besides, one group of kids picking on another different group essentially just for being different is a fact of life in schools (within reason, of course). It's part of growing up, we've all been picked on at one point or another.

Thanks. I need all the help I can get. I just found out I missed a deadline for my residence forms, so hopefully everything will turn out okay. (brilliant move on the University's part by placing the date on the second last line of an otherwise irrelivant greeting letter, with no mention of the date on any of the official forms that have to be mailed back.)

I have more to say, but I have to go. I'll make another post when I get back.

Not nessercerally, i hang out with different 'dress crowds' as you put them, i know goths, townies, emos and even the odd chav.

Yes people do get mocked for what they wear which i find harsh beyond belief, but i think it would give a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere to the school if uniforms were scrapped.

Nah what i mean is sometimes people do jugde people by their looks.

This is totally and uterly wrong, you cant just hate someone because they dont wear nike clothes or stick with the latest trends.

This does happen sometimes (not usually where i live but still) quite simply because of striotypical views.

I dont nessercerraly love everyone, but i give everyone a chance.

As for the uniform point yes it does avoid all this 'gorup' stuff but still wat would u feel mroe comfortable in, a uniform or just normal clothes?
 
Well I already have my school shoes and a new pair of trousars. Probably a few new uniform tops and maybe a new pair of ruby socks.

Yes I go to a Uniform school, and prefer it. Though wish the girls would wear skirts more often :p

It's weird because in some schools all the girls (even the ones you wish wouldn't) wear skirts :sly: , but in some it's complete opposite :crazy: .

And not having a summer option (Guys have to wear black trousars all year round) sucks. :ouch:

Yeah same here but girls can wear skirts in the summer and boys can wear the amazing polo shirt in the summer....

But there is no rule making girls not wear thongs....
 
Sorry to go slightly off topic for a post, but what is the big deal with polos? I know lots of people swear by them, but I don't even own any (well, aside from one for golfing).

I hate them i was being sarcastic when i sed bout them being almighty or wateva. i had one for school that was eventually burnt on the last day and yeah i have some for golf too... bloody dress codes at my club.... otherwise i stick to either t-shirts or buttoned shirts.

Anyways back to subject uniforms suck, 6th form dont :D

I like to be able to wear shorts in the summer and a nice t-shirt

It was school time today. It was booring. Nothing new, just some papers nothing else. I could have been sleeping instead of stupid school. :grumpy: AND wtf were they thinking? Starting on wednesday? Only 2 days then its weekend. :dunce:
 
I can't believe I've missed this thread.

Anyway, I'm started on Monday in general upper secondary school/sixth form. My first term is a bit hard, I have a course (36 hours) of all Chemistry, biology, English, German and maths. I'm going for advanced syllabus on maths, and it's gonna kill me sooner or later. I don't think I'll have too much free time because of the amount of homework I'm gonna be getting later this year.

And here you have to pay for your books and school supplies on upper levels of education, so I had to buy my books. Spent about 170€ on them, but I'm set now.

And it looks like there's big debate on school uniforms. Even though I'm very glad there are no school uniforms in Finland, Famine's made some very good points.
 
I find poolos more comfortable than shirts, as that is the only option you could have in a shirt wearing school.

Although again, chicks wearing skirts and shirts are way hotter than trousars and polos.
 
T-shirts are the best. I love just wearing t-shirts and jeans. But I don't wear T-shirts with sports logos and such... I do have a few nintendo shirts, a pac man shirt, like 4 AC/DC t shirts (don't wear them very often anymore), A Thrice T shirt, and 2 or 3 ones with funny sayings. And jeans, blue is all you need.

Man, at the end of last years school year my $130 TI-83 Plus Silver was stolen, I sound like a total nerd but I really liked that calculator. I was so scared to tell my parentes that I basically lost a $130 piece of equipment that...I still haven't told them I don't have it or have any idea where it is. And here I am, exactly one week before school starts and I'm stranded with no calculator and a Precalculus Honors and a Physics Honors class looming over my head. What am I gonna do!! UGH!!

So yeah, bascially all I need is $130 or a new TI-83.

haha, same, my dad is so pissed because I need to go through my third one since 7th grade... :nervous: I'm also doin the same classes as you :yuck:

I must say you're getting absolutely jacked, TI-83 Pluses are 90 bucks around here and TI-84s are 120 or so... weird because I'm not that far away.
 
Yeah, I think the whole clothes deal is pretty much the stupidest thing ever. Like, I have a ton of band shirts, but I also have a bunch of dress-up (Hollister, Abercrombie, American Eagle, stuff like that) clothes because I like how I look in them. I may want to look good one day, and support my favorite band the next. I'm sure it's already been said, but people should not be judged by their clothes.

PS pretty much my only new-for-school purchase was a brown The Mars Volta shirt. :sly:
 
Since I rarely show up for classes, nothing really for school. Turns out I will be working through the Fall semester at GM and starting classes come the winter sememster. It's great since I hate school.

But for work I need to get some more shirts and ties, as well as another business suit. I think a new laptop in my future as well.
 
Since school starts on September 6th for me, I still have couple of weeks to purchase stuff.

What I need to purchase for the coming year though:
Mechanical Pencils (I lost 2 in the last school year :guilty: )
Paper
Binders
ASB Card
Hopefully a parking permit (my parents are still considering whether or not to buy another car).
