I am so upset.

There's some girl in one of my classes who continually refers to the UK as England.

Continually.

Great Britain is technically wrong too, but it works, and it's ten times better than England.

THERE'S NO QUEEN OF ENGLAND

HEY IDIOTS DON'T YOU KNOW YOU'RE WRONG?

Look at a map!!

Discuss.

When you say United Kingdom, what exactly do you refer to?

As far as I knew, the UK constituted many countries, not only one. Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland. So your friend might have been referring to ENGLAND only , not the other countries around it.

Also, I don't think there's a "Queen of the UK", does she has power in Wales?

The Queen has no power, only sovereignty. Her full title, for those that give a crap, is:

By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

But she is the Queen of England and England only isn't she?

No.

Her territories include England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

If Great Britain is technically wrong then so is United Kingdom.

The full name is....

The United Kingdom of Great Britain. Hopefully we might lose the first 4 words and just be Great Britain.

Defender of the faith? The Queen getting involved in religious wars, now that would be interesting reality tv....

Day 4 in the Apartheid house...

Great Britain = England, Scotland & Wales

Falklands? I'm just asking, because there was this war a while back. . .

Who cares?

Personally I live in England which is part of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, Europe, Earth, solar system 5 on the left...

They're classed alongside Ascension Island, Pitcairn Island and St. Helena. They're self-governing overseas territories.

Yep.

I refer to it as the United Kingdom personally.

You're still "that place over the pond" to me :D.
Actually, according to the Americans that Jeremy Clarkson asked in his newest DVD, you Americans don't know much about Europe... at all. They don't know where Paris is, etc.

And I bet 20 e-dollars you couldn't name more than 25 states without looking them up, let alone tell us where they are. Double standard for the lose.

Does that include me?

Why should we have to know states within a country, when you don't even know countries?

EDIT: And I could probably point to and name 30-odd states.

Name over 10 counties in the UK without looking them up. Then I'll gladly accept.

States within a country, countries within a union. True, they are not the same, but they are, kind of. I've been to Europe. It's not that big of a stretch to think of the countries as states. Most are tied to the EU, most have the same currency, and travel and trade between them is pretty easy, and you can pretty much find plenty of people in each country that speak whatever language you do.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to wonder why we get ridiculed for not knowing much about Europe, when many Europeans don't know much about America.

Damn:ouch:

Even though many of the European countries are part of the EU, I don't consider them any different from pre EU to post EU. Don't think they come close to how the States are in the USA. Though States in the US are very different to counties in the UK or provinces in France, Germany, etc.

Yes but Jeremy Clarkson went to las Vegas. let me repeat, he went to LAS VEGAS. and right in the middle of the city too. Your not going to find anybody that isn't ignorant in the middle of las Vegas let alone sober.

I admit, i cant really name that many countries in Europe either but at least i am not as bad as those people were in las Vegas.

Scotland, England, France, Italy, wales, Germany, Russia. ( well thats all i can think of right off the top of my head. tell me if any are wrong.) ( the only reason i remembered wales was because i recently watched an old top gear episode with the ford focus rs where he went to wales )

I can identify the the countries of the UK, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland, and most of Western Europe on a map. It's Eastern Europe that trips me up :ouch:

you can pretty much find plenty of people in each country that speak whatever language you do.

Official language of Oregon? English.
Official language of California? English (except LA).
Official language of Georgia? English. Ish.
Official language of Maryland? English.
Official language of North Dakota? English.

Official language of England? English.
Official language of France? French.
Official language of Germany? German.
Official language of Spain? Spanish.
Official language of Italy? Italian.

And that's not even getting into freaky-speaking countries like Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Finland, Slovenia or The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Each State (or Commonwealth) in the US has its own laws based on a common framework and are all governed by one overriding law - Federal Law. Each country in Europe has its own laws based on NO common framework and there is no single governing law above that.

Fact is that Italy gets as many seats in the UN Security Council as the US does - and far more than Texas does.

I'm not saying that you should know all of the countries in Europe - I doubt many people in the UK can either. Just that comparing them to States because of their sizes is foolhardy (especially when you factor in Rhode Island).

Quite frankly I hate it when people refer to the United Kingdom as England or when they think Wales is within England.

Yes, yes, you may say Wales is technically a principality and not an independent nation but I also say your mother is fat.

Also, I don't think there's a "Queen of the UK", does she has power in Wales?
Welsh Independance for 2030!

American news is all too often on the national news.

I could probably do that, just. :scared:

There aren't even 10 countries in the United Kingdom as far as I know.

But then again, you guys over the pond do have a more complex structure of geography than we do. We're just a bunch of states slabbed inside of a country :D.

Edit: According to daan..

United Kingdom = England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland

:odd:

I'm confuzzled. I hate the UK and how it's made :D.
Counties, not countries you dumb-dumb!

He has a point.

If you go to France, you will get by with English, even if you get frowned at and get thrown out of bars. The Germans as well, are generally okay with English. The Spanish, hell in the tourist regions everyone speaks English and usually German. Italy, AFAIK, not as receptive, but the language of the pointing finger knows no boundaries.
