Have you never heard of the abrasive material we Americans--that's you too--call sandpaper? You know, the rough stuff that makes wood smooth like glass just as well as it tears your skin off? The grit of sandpaper describes the coarseness of the paper.

And that's why I don't eat "grits". They really could've come up with a better name for the stuff.

Yeah, I've heard of that, but its two different words, L4S said he has never heard of Grits, with an s, used as food.
 
I suppose they are two different words. But the food "grits" was probably given the name because of its coarse texture. It is just coarsely ground-up oats, after all.
