Ooops.

Got a bit carried away with overclocking and set the timings too low for my RAM. My computer now beeps on boot and won't let me access the BIOS to change it back. I'm aware that i need to reset the BIOS but am totally unaware how to do this. I've tried google but don't know what to search for except "resetting bios" but that brings up nothing of interest.

Help needed fast, i'd like my computer back up and running quickly if possible 👍

If it makes any difference the beeps are 1 long followed by 2 short.
 
You have to place a jumper on the motherboard a certain way to make it bring up the BIOS with the factory settings. Check the motherboard manual for how to do that or call up the manufacturer and ask them. Either that or post the motherboard here and I'm sure someone will help you (not me though, that would take too much effort :)).

Reset your CMOS, that's usually done by changing a jumper on your motherboard for a few seconds, then changing it back, if your timings are too low and that's why it's not booting, then resetting the CMOS should work. You won't lose any data, so don't worry, you'll just have to reset the system time, and any other BIOS settings.

If you have the AWARD BIOS, that beep code means it's a problem with your video card, but i think that's just a side effect of the timings on the RAM.

You really should be more careful with overclocking, let this be a lesson to you to not get carried away...
 
The nForce4 SLI chipset is located just below the SLI EZ selector port. Note that it is covered by an active cooling solution, held to the chipset by two push pins on opposite sides of the chipset. The CHIP_FAN header for the chipset HSF unit is located just above it. To the left of the chipset are the 8 onboard SATA ports, grouped in 2 sets of 4 ports. The red colored ports are tied to the Silicon Image controller, while the black colored ports are tied to the NVIDIA RAID controller. In the lower left corner of the board are the front panel header, game controller port header, chassis intrusion jumper and the CHA1_FAN header. Just above the front panel header are the COM1 header, and the 3 USB 2.0 headers. The CMOS battery and CMOS reset jumper are located just to the right of the lower 2 USB 2.0 headers.

Did you backup your bios to a flash disk? ;)

Unfortunately I don't have a floppy drive so even that wouldn't work for me.

If you do have a floppy, that could save you from having to open the case.

You might also try just One stick of ram installed. It might adjust the ram settings based on the hardware change. (this is only a guess, try at your own risk).

Haven't got a mobo manual so can't check. Do i just need to move the blue plastic thing from the first two pins |-|| to the 2nd and 3rd pins ||-|?

I'd look up the motherboard manual online and figure out for sure. But there probably isn't any harm in trying it for a few seconds and then putting it back. If you don't boot the computer with the jumper set differently you probably haven't risked. Hell, it would probably be ok even if you powered up with the incorrect jumper setting. I just wouldn't take any chances when you can find out for sure with a little research.

Again, I'd look up the manual on the Asus website to be sure you're doing the right thing.

No idea what you have to do with it though!
 
Just been reading a story about some dude who tried soldering his CMOS pins to reset it. Glad to see there are some people who are slightly crazier than me.

Getting the manual now 👍

I sanded down my GPU chips on my old Voodoo 5500 3DFX card back in the day... :lol:
 
Ah i'm saved. Posting once again from 'Eleanor'. Yes in the near-death experience i have just experienced with my computer i have decided to name her.

I removed the battery, moved the jumper, waited about 10 seconds (10 very long seconds) and then moved the jumper back, replaced the battery and booted. No beeps. Hoorah!

Yes that pretty sums up how i'm feeling right now. No more messing.. until i get my water cooler: "Guys, there's liquid pouring into my PC. Shall i try the CMOS jumper again?" :dunce: I'll learn one day.

I remember someone actually used liquid nitrogen to cool their 7800 GTX (512mb).
 
A couple months back I did the same thing. I was trying to get my timings down after some other people reported success on the same RAM.
