For the 99%figure basically i meant most software now you can run on a mac w/o and emulator except for some games. I know the newest monkey island you can play on the Mac. As for emulators if you get a mac i can give you some great sites, i have a fully OSX Super nintendo Emulator called SNESX(Very Good), I even have a plastation emulator I can mail to you(I o longer need it) Theirs also several GamePads/Joysticks for the mac, i have one almost identical to the PS controller(all the same buttons plus to more"trigger" like buttons)Most Gampepads/Joysticks come with a connecter so it can be used with USB or the PC port.

I you need anymore help feel free to ask ^^

I knew that the LCD monitor for the iMacs was built in, but I wasn't sure if there was a cable connecting it to the hemi-sphere, or if the cables were in the monitor stand.

I checked out Apple's website, and if I wanted to get a semi-decent G4(specs down below), it would cost nearly $2k US w/out a monitor. Now seeing that I have a lot of monitors around the house, and my job is inconsistant, I can't afford to dish out another $400 for an Apple monitor, or get the DVD player let alone the DVD burner. So, I'd get an Apple only if it's a tower(like the G3's and G4's,) but I simply don't have the money, so my best bet would to go with eMachines and get a cheap AMD processor and install from scratch.

Yes the towers are very expensive, their meant for people whos jobs require a very hih end fast machine(Graphics Designer, Web Designer Etc...)Also you do not need an apple moniter on the towers, so you can use on that you already have. Im pretty sure that it can play dvds already(I thnk all newer macs can) and youd need a 2nd CD Drive to burn anyways, also you would get iDvd with that computer(i just doesnt come with iMacs/eMacs) the eMacs are basically meant for basic consumers, give me a minute and ill bring out the specs...okay for a Consumer w/ a Cd Writing, Dvd reading combo drive, $1,199 Comes with a modem OSX, 700MHz g4processer 124mb of RAM(Wouldnt hurt to pay 50$ for a bit mroe) and a 40GB hard drive. It is better than the G3/700 and G4/700 imacs and only a td worse than the G4/800 imac. Its comes with an Easy way to plug in an airport card and memory, but it is a hassle to upgrade other components 17" flat screen CRT, you can also purchase a 60$ stand(Should Be Free ><) For ports it has 3USB 2FireWire a 56k modem and one 10/100BaseT Ethernet. Its miniVGA port accepts an opional 20$ VGA adapter, which allow video mirroring on an external moniter/projecter. Also a mic and headphone Jack

Sorry if that sounds kind of ufnky, i just read it out of MacWorld Zine its a decent comp, cheapf ro a mac with good power.

macs suck

You said school computers
EVERYONE can agree that school computers suck, but they always buy the low-end machines that are probably the last-year models. You can't just say that Macs suck in general, because my Apple][e still kicks! Oh man, so many good games for that thing...

don't diss apple im using one now there great machines especially for my line of work photoshop work . music production

the spec of my machine running OSX 1.1

G4 Dual gig prossesor

1.5 gig ram

100 gig harddrive

4.7 gig DVD ram drive

22inch monitors x2

and loads other kit i can't be bothered going into it all :)

on the plus side for apple did they charge their consumers for the upgrades for OSX nope
but microshaft did for upgrades for XP that didnt solve the problem

And OSX is linux based

I heard somewhere that apple is going to start charging for the use of I tools which i dont mind at all you get loads of software updates and loads of other cool stuff on there :)

and one more thing in apples defense my machine has never given me any problems apart from one time when a microshaft proggie srewed it up so i had to get rid of it no problems since and thats the truth

It's good to see some mac supporters out there ;)

OSX is UNIX based as is linux, not linux based

also why would you need 2cinema displays? and are they HD?

Also id like to say that Apple just a few days ago(I believe monday) released a dual 1.5GhZ Tower, and all towers now will always be dual.

I actually got an old Macintosh 2 out of the closet and got it working on OS6.? very funny how sad it is, ended up stealing a floppy drive from another machine and switching m though. Apples getting old, it had rust in it. Also if anyone has an Apple2 that works go play with it, their funny running off a floppy and booting in 2seconds.

In response to your question Q-Zar I stand corrected on unix

the reason i use 2 displays is for the sheer volume of work i do in photoshop 7

I normally work on many images at one time having one screen is no good for this sort of thing so one screen i use for the tool bar the other for the images it makes life so much easier

Its also great for surfing viewing many pages at once where as with one you have to minimise the sites to look at others :)

I do!!! In fact, it 's less than 5 feet away from me right now! I'm just not sure if it's plugged in, but I still have all of the great games like GI JOE and LOADRUNNER

Apple2, a great machine. Im currently playing Loom on our mac2, Id under stand 2normal monters but 2 22" cinema displays is a lot of room, and very expensive. But whatever suits you. Any of you people totally take apart a ibook, motherboard ad all. Damn those things are compact. Were getting a replacement part for an old lbueberry one, had to get a new chip which plugs into the motherboard(the power jack)And those things are just crammed.

Does anybody know when Apple has really big sales? Because with my limited budget, I need to find some really good deals for any Apple I'm willing to get.

Apple itself really doesnt have sales, but you can buy them from other stores when they have sales, or you can try and find a place that sells Apples that they dont make anymore, if you want a tower this si a good time since they just redesigned them. So many stores now have probably dropped their price on their Apple towers since they are now out of date. You can also always check ebay. Happy Hunting~

Rjensen:

I've always mailordered mine. Go to CompUSA and look at the floor models to get a feel for what you'd like. After that, visit the following:

www.maczone.com
www.macmall.com
www.macconnection.com

Those are the three biggest Mac mailorder houses. Find what you're looking for, then call them up. List out everything you want, and ask what their best price is, and what freebies you get. They'll deal. Be polite, ask the sales person to do their best; let them know you're talking to other stores. They'll usually match prices and/or freebies. When I bought my G4/450 two years ago I dealt down about $700 on the package price, plus I got a good scanner for $20, and some free games. If you are nice about it and work with sales people they will do their best for you.

If you are really on a budget go to: www.shrevesystems.com

They buy/sell used Macs, out-of-date models, and factory-reconditioned warranty returns. You can get some serious bargains there. If I were you I'd see what they have in a G3 or G4 machine. They usually have packages available with monitor, etc.

Good luck!

Also make sure that they come with MacOSX and at least 128mb of RAM. Im assuming that they would but you never know. Also shoot for a g4.
