JGTC S2 Round 5 Race + Results

Time submitted.
Pretty unclean race but i don't think i've had a really clean one at Laguna. Hopefully the results will be kind to me.

eatsviper, just curious, but will we be taking a short break for Christmas? I know I can't be the only one going out of town for the holiday.

Oh yeah, and time submitted a couple of hours ago. :p

We do have a break between December 26 - January 1.

People will have to submit for R6 race early and R7 will start on the 2nd until the 8th. We don't have a choice to run R6 before the break because otherwise we'll have to stop right now tonight, and I won't race the qualif before the break and then the race after the break. So Monday 26th until Sunday 1st we are off.

Sorry VTR but we had an emergency docking of one of our Navy Ships here in Japan and that had priorty :(

Ran the race once at least before the weekend and spending time with girlfriend. Had times at work to submitt also.

That's ok Tele, I don't think my time is anything to write home about.

I reckon we might be a little outgunned in the teams department anyway.

What was the drama with the Navy ship?

jctraduz + Soyfu are now forming a new team, I will readjust everything in the standings guys 👍

Congrats to ZeratulSG & Nuvolari on the win. 👍 :sly:

I'm leaving town wednsday for Cali for a couple of weeks, be back right before the first of the year. How soon will the Qualify thread be up for Race 6, I may be able to take my PS2 with me to my In-Laws house and run the race there. But will most definately need to run the qualify lap before I leave.... hmmmm.

Shaft bearing seal needed replaced so had to go into dry dock immediatly.

Bummer.

Congrats to Zeratul for pulling off his first GT500 win. 👍

And new boy Nuvolari wipes the floor with everyone in GT300 :)

Well done everyone, I'm about where I expected to be. And ev4l will be happy, he gets to take off 1% for the next race. :dopey:

Correct me if I'm wrong. But VTRacing is now leading the GT500 Championship by 1 point!

Woohoo!

Man GT500 is seriously competitive, I'm very happy with this win. Congrats to Nuvolari on taking the GT300 win, and fasj6418, nice finish, what were you concerned about? ;)

Q: "Mr. Zeratul, a close race today, taking the win by less than 4 seconds. How do you feel?"

A: "Terrific! We had a rough start to the season, for the first two rounds our steering mechanism was stuck between full-lock or no-lock. But we've been working hard as a team and the car is just getting faster, and I'm becoming more comfortable with the sudden transition from GT300."

See ya at the next race :D

Edit: BTW, can someone point me to the race calendar thread? I can't seem to find it.

Sweet, thanks.

My pits:

L01 RH/RH
L14 RH/RH
L30 RM/RM
L40 penalty for rear-ending FTO

I crossed the finish line in the pit. Lost 5-7 seconds. It wouldn't have changed the race outcome, but it was lucky it wasn't a bigger penalty since I had dudes on my heals! (red cloud, drew)
____________

I did another run and only stopped once on lap 20. No real issues but I guess the laps were just too slow because the final race time was a little more (1:01'06.xxx). But it was pretty easy to run 20 laps on RH tires. I even got a few 1'28.xxx laps.

Well, it's a new responsability being part of a team. I'm on the "silent" team... :)

I'll, try to do my best, Soyfu. This one should have been a good go for me, but had no time to repeat the race and improve my time.

PS - I replied before seeing my 3rd position :dopey:. And best lap. I'm pretty happy with it. My best performance so far. Uhlala....hehe.

congrats man, 3´8 seconds... life isn´t fair...
hey, i was just concerned because i needed to score 19 in this round... i ended up with 15, which is also good...

extra pit hurt me big time... i have no idea why my skyline likes so much to wear the front tires... since i knew you had a better balanced skyline, i figured you would go with 3 pits only...

nice go andge, i think you got the lead up to this point...

now i have to do some math to see what i am in the standings...

Fuji Speedway 80’s - 4.32km
Twin Ring Motegi – Road Course - 4.80km
Special Stage Route 5 - 3.79km
Suzuka Circuit - 5.81km
Apricot Hill Speedway - 3.86km

that´s the rest of the schedule, its in round one´s qualify thread...

not very good to me, i only like suzuka and route 5 out of those... apricot and fuji will kill me

Ditto. I hate all Motegi's with a passion. Apricot hill is much better with a road car.

It will be interesting how we all go on Fuji. I can't imagine it will have much tyre wear. It's also only really has one left turn. The powerful cars will have a picnic here.

Good result for me here. I do believe I could have caught you Nuvolari, but I didn't get a chance to try a 2 stop stratgy on laps 15 and 30.

I also felt like trying out the C-West Razo Silvia. Bad tire wear if you use full lock, but I found a way to almost keep it with the field. I was really bored, and tired of the Celica. :p

Grats to ZeratulSG and Nuvolari. Glad to see that you are getting used to the DS2, Zeratul. 👍

Wow. I can't believe it. I really never thought it would work.

So the plan was to run softs of both front and rear, and to make five stops, on laps 7,14,21,28, and 34. I thought the trick was to get good average lap times with no mistakes and get in and out of the pits with an average loss of 28 seconds per stop.

One slight advantage of the fifth stop was that pitting on lap 34 allowed two short stints where the tires were still consistent, and that may have been the advantage, that the effective lap time average for those two stints would be the cushion.

Checking the replay, it seemed to work out. Stops averaged 28.2", segments averaged right at 1'25.250". So the calculations of 85.25" per lap plus 28.20" per stop plus 4.00" for the first lap comes out to 59'15.00", which is very close to what happened.

I hope this isn't too boring, but since I may never be able to pull something like it off again, I'll just pass on how I figured trying what seemed to be intuitively backwards might work by doing some pre-race tire testing.

With H/M tires, I ran a 14 lap arcade race, replayed it and recorded elapsed time at both 11 and 14 laps, then calculated the average lap time for both stints. This covered a worst case 40 lap race with both 2 and 3 stops. The extra lap counted for a possible late pit in lap.

With M/S tires, I ran an 11 lap race, replayed it and recorded elapsed time at both 9 and 11 laps, and calculated average lap times for both. This covered a race with both 3 and 4 stops.

With S/S tires, I ran a 9 lap race, replayed it and recorded elapsed time at both 7 and 9 laps, and again checked average lap times. This covered a 4 and 5 stop race.

So then I knew approximately what kind of average lap times I could do for particular stint lengths and tire combinations, and I had already tested to determine, within a second, how quickly I could get in and out of the paddock.

So then I just calculated what the race time would be for the different combinations of tires and stops, and the answer showed the soft tires were the best choice at Laguna, simply because of the short pit stop times. It did seem a little counter-intuitive, but the numbers seemed to make sense.

I had run one race, which I planned to call my official run, with H/M tires and two stops, and did a 1:00.25.172", which I thought was reasonable and which would have placed me about fourth or so, and really I would have expected that placing.

But the testing was the key that made the difference. As I said in a pre-results note, during the entire race I had essentially no tire concerns at all. I could run pretty hard with no risks and good predictability without the typical teeth-grinding adjustments as the tires became doo-doo.

So, in an altruistic gesture, I would simply offer that this fairly short type of tire testing, which is a lot quicker than running a whole race, should work at any track and for any length race. It's a lot better than the WAG method, at least for me.

Again, sorry for the length of this, but maybe it will generate some interest. I'd especially like to hear about the other finishers' choices on tire compounds and number of stops.

I'm sure you, and others, could have matched or bettered my race time. I believe the big factor was simply pit strategy. And don't overlook the fact that my weight to power ratio is about 7% less (better) than yours.

I am curious about your race plan. By your times I would guess you ran M/S tires and stopped twice. Close? And why would you do a two-stopper and pit on laps 15 and 30 rather than on (about) laps 13 and 26?

good show everyone!

i waited until the last second to run my race so i threw on rh/rm and went for it 1 shot only..i barely submitted intime

my pits were 14 and 28

i had wanted to switch over to soft tires on the last stop, but was unsure of how long they would last, so i opted to just keep the same all through the race

atleast i didnt run outta fuel!

lol looks like my one stopper didnt work!! hahaah

woulda been my only chance anyways

3 points off of 1st, crazy close

Yes, I did run on RM/RS, and pitted on lap's 10, 20 and 30. But reason for the want of a two stopper on laps 15 and 30 was so that at lap 30, I could switch to RM/RS and get a really fast stint in. It didn't work, because the Celica could only get 14 laps during the first stint. As the fuel went down, managed to run for 15 laps, and I think if I went and re-ran it now, I would be able to do it.

Great job on figuring out the pits, because 5 is alot of time in the pits. I wouldn't have thought it would work. 👍

I'm not, I bought another DFP over here during round 3, notice the sudden improvement from round 2 to 3 :)

Somewhere during round 3, we figured out why the steering was only going from no-lock to full-lock and fixed it :D

I pit on laps 10, 20, and 30 using RM/RM the whole way. Right-front was pretty bad on my in-laps, but manageable
