Now I say hear me out, but this isn't going to be a big post really, its just a point.

I was reading the 'Why do some people have a different font/colour for all their posts? thread today and came across this post:

I personally use the dark purple because I like having something unique about my posts. This is basically my way of compensating for not having the ability to put image signatures. If image signatures were possible in this forum I wouldn't be using this colour at the moment.

Now I am sure that this has been brought up time after time over the years (i've probably read about it too) but I feel like its a pretty valid idea. I rarely post here these days, I am a lurker, so posting this is pretty big to me considering.

I go on many car forums (even normal forums, as we all do) and see image signatures that work really well. Take for example, this screenshot from Rexnet:

It isn't the perfect example of a whole bunch of signatures working together on one page but it's good enough. I think with strict guidelines to conform to (perhaps different with premo's and non premo's) that we could easily pull this off and maintain a clean, easy to read forum.

The following is a weak argument I know, but, it works elsewhere so why not here? I know you may argue that it will slow down loading times and stuff but to be honest, the size of some of the images posted on this forum that I have to load is ridiculous. I live in Australia, the land of some of the slowest net known to exist on this planet and I am suggesting this, so that's probably saying something too.

It's just a thought, I am sure you have reasons to have not implemented this but I am just throwing it out there, I think it would work. I won't create a poll but if people could express interest or disinterest in the replies that would be better :).

I think half of the problem is that many members would have unsightly messes as an image and it would be really hard for the mod team to approve every image sig.

There might be the likes of us that would go ahead and spend plenty of time making a really nice bit of art to have as a signature but no doubt some people will take advantage of it and try to abuse the privilege.

Also, from a point of view of reading through a thread, wouldn't you find it breaks up the flow of the thread and makes for gaps in text between posts?

My 2 problems with image signatures is that they can get out of hand size wise(size restriction could be possible), which would make it annoying when people posted a few words, but then have filled up 5 or 6 more with an image. My second point, is that they can be a bit distracting while you're trying to read through posts.

What you've shown there is an entire screen that contains no information whatsoever except the words "Spec C seats". It's just the bottom half of an image from one post and the rest of the screen's real estate is signature.

It's a perfect example of why we don't really want sig images.

That's why you implement a size restricter. I know lots of sites that have those. Just my 2 cent on this matter. It doesn't bother me much either way.

I am on a forum which have restrictions (or did, not been on it for a few years) of something like 400*150 or 3 small banner images.

Signature, the noun Pokemon.

Signature is a handwritten depiction of someone's name often used as proof of identity or authentication. It's special attack is text characters and letters.

Do you sign forms and letters with a picture? Text only please.

My opinion, I've said it before and I'll say it again:

I'm completely in favor of the no-images-in-sigs policy. It starts looking pretty cluttered when a thread has a number of two- or three-line posts, all of which are accompanied by a (relatively) huge graphic that contributes nothing whatsoever to the discussion. Not to mention that the images draw attention away from the post itself

Even if an image is tasteful, clever and not too obnoxious (and that would not be true of some images in sigs) they get pretty old the hundredth or thousandth time you have to scroll past it.

If I want to see your gallery I'll click on a link to it in your sig. Otherwise don't try to force it or parts of it on me.

I agree with BobK. While I use a picture signature myself in another forum, I find most of them pretty annoying. Not because of the size, but because they can be distracting while scrolling.

Why you add a "Don't Display Images In Sig" option for the settings. Another simple feature many other forums have.

Images in signatures add nothing to sites other than unnecessary clutter. The only other forum I frequent, and not very often at that, allows images in signatures and it sucks to try to look for information quickly because of needing to sort through unnecessary clutter. An avatar is more than enough to personalize each post.

My opinion of signature images remains unchanged; I still find them to be unsightly, cluttered, and messy, while making forum posts more difficult to read.

Sig images are really for people to forcefully make you know about their interests. That's what it comes down to almost all the time. We don't need this, it's what profile pages and avatars are for.

I am so happy that GTPlanet Forums doesn't allow it, because places that do always have people who shove a bunch of useless content at us all.

I'll agree with this. People rely too much on the auto re-sizing software on the forum to resize the images, but you still have to load the original file.

I'll also say this is the only forum I go to that doesn't have sig pics. ;)

I absolutely fail to see the point, or rather the need of image signatures. What purpose do they serve? I don't really get the individuality argument, you already have an avatar and a unique name, what more do you want? If you have a conversation within a group of people in real life do you do something to stand out? Do you shout, do you talk in a funny accent or wear bright colours to stand out? No, and that's personally how I see message boards. It's a group of people conversing.

I mean in that example, why do I need to see pictures of their car EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY POST? Answer, I don't.
