Jumps. Yay or Nay

I'm not keen on them, I think in real life, getting that kind of air would not only do some serious damage to the cars, but would result in many accidents. The AI in GT5 seem to glide over them seamlessly and it doesn't feel real enough to me.
I suppose in real life though drivers would slow down for them.

Jumps are a good idea sometimes, especially in rallies, but I don't think the GT physics engine deals with them well. Most cars seem to go nose up and land on the back axle, but if you watch clips of real jumping you rarely if ever see this behaviour. Most real world jumps appear to result in the car landing front end first.

They're pretty exciting, especially when driving a fast car like Veyron. Of course you can add more downforce, so the car doesn't get up from the ground much at all. So, I like them.

I don't mind them in rally courses like the one on the Eiger dirt course but the Eiger paved course or Cape Ring is kind of lame. Why would PD even add such an unrealistic jump?

Its all to do with if you accelerate, brake or coast a split second before you leave the ground. Transferring the weight of the car using this method will decide how you land. In real life this is the case anyway and I think (and hope) the game reflects this.

In answer to the OP I like the jumps in game but wouldnt want any more.

The hops on Nurburg are a pure blast, but most other jumps just feel out of place.

I agree with this, the one on the Cape Ring, is just stupid, but small ones, just like on the Ring' are great fun to go over, and also fun to try and stay nice and straight on the track after landing.

They're unrealistic and I hate them. Eiger's is OK. Cape Ring's is ridiculous and I never use any variation of that track that has the jump (ie, Cape Ring South is the only valid configuration for me). Bumps I don't mind, but ramps that launch the car 10's of feet into the air doesn't make sense.

I'm very glad that the Grand Valley and Trial Mountain no longer have the insane jumps that they did in GT1.

I love jumps, as far as them impacting the realness of the game, I cant really say as I have never jumped a car. For me the jumps makes some tracks more fun, even if unrealistic, but no more realistic than me owning a ferarri one day, so I say keep the jumps.

IMO the best kind of jumps depend on the speed of your car. It looks awesome just to get air with the front wheels with the rears just touching the tarmac.

Totally agree with all of this. Cape Ring would be so sick without that annoying jump. On Eiger Short it is, like mentioned, "ok", the track was more a Rallye track when it was introduced in GTHD anyway.
I like the jump in the straight at trial montain

Well, that's not really a "jump" unless you are driving with an extremely overpowered car.

Yes, sometimes

Yay! There only on a select few tracks, there catering for everyone, not only a handful of people.

No.
Maybe if the physics model had the tyres burst, the suspension components crumble and throw the cars off the track sideways at a million miles an hour.... and then only maybe.

Yes, it's something different on a track, the people satin it's not realistic can just keep racing the world circuits over and over. The tracks with jumps and turns you'd never see is what makes it fun.

Edit: this thread could really use a poll. 💡

I really don't care for them because they in no way simulate what happens in real life. The amount of air you get on some of these jumps should beat the snot out of your car. In some cars (in real life) you'd probably break your suspension upon landing when you consider the speed and height of these jumps.

That jump at the cape reminds me of the old movies from the 70's. Get a group of old muscle cars on that jump and it looks pretty funny. In those old movies the cars would bounce like mad.., and that was even after the set mechanics adjusted the suspension on them so the cars wouldn't bounce into other things.

Not very realistic but good fun to drop a jump track in a shuffle room every now and then :D

WOW! That's too funny. In real life that Prelude in the back is DONE for. The moment that car hit the ground, SNAP, CRACKLE, POP! That sliver car (looks like a Merc).., just MIGHT.., (just might).., have a chance at still running once it bounces a few times from that height.

I don't mind small jumps like the one on the Nordschleife and Trial Mountain. Eiger's jump is acceptable as well, since the track is basically more of a rally track than a proper road course.

Cape Ring's jump is ridiculous :yuck: The track would be great for endurance races, if there was a way for the LMP's to get around without getting damaged :ouch:

I dislike the main jump at Cape Ring. Too large. However, I do like small hops, such as the ones at the Nurburgring, Trial Mountian, the small ones at Cape Ring, and the jumps at Deep Forest.

The one at Eiger is acceptable because rally/street cars, for which the track was made, either are made for jumps like that, or can't go fast enough for it to be a really large jump.

wow those pics above are quite hilarious.. blow out city for all involved, irl. But i think jumps in gt5 are3 alright and cool, since it is a game... dont think i'd ever take, my VR6 VW on Cape Ring if it really existed, and if i did i'd go <50MPH over the hump.
