what on earth is this tabbed browsers thing?

ive been using IE since i learned how to use a computer back in the early 90s...

why should i switch over and can someone give me a FULL list of whats different/better between these 2 browsers?

Tabbed browsing is browsing multiple pages at once in one window, and you navigate each one using tabs that are at the top of the window...

Also downloads have their own window, so if you are downloading multiple files they dont each open a window...

Extensions are also great, they are simple to install and keep track of, turn on and off etc. They just add cool features.

Also this posted earlier can make FF even faster.

There's lots of other things about it that make it superior to IE but I can't think at the moment :)

You really have to try firefox to get the full effect. I didn't think it was all that great until I tried it and I was shocked at how horrible MSIE was in comparison. Download it, install it, you'll love it.

:scared: Quick someone recycle this thread so it keeps people from d/ling it.

Ha! Too late. I just downloaded it again, but I'm not using it. I still think it sucks.
Sidescrolling is sooooo much fun!

Yeh, that tabbed thng is weird.

Although i've set firefox as my default browser, when i try and check my emails from MSN Messenger 7.0 (i select the emails whilst looking a MSN Today), my emails open in internet explorer. I guess it's a microsoft thing.

I did use msn explorer before, but i could only get it on this desktop, and not on the laptop, as to download a new copy, you had to pay msn money.
I tried it on here the other day, but no it's usa only, so i can't use my new email address, which is @hotmail.co.uk, instead of @hotmail.com. When i opened it up, i realised how dreadfully slow it was, and that was just comparing to normal internet explorer!

thanks for the Prefetch: 1 extension. i have that and the booster on firefox, and FF is finally back up to par. I've downloaded 1.0.1-1.0.3 in a single MONTH, though.

will the prefetch work with other browsers, or Just Firefox?

I have a slight problem at the moment - i can't post images in their proper size for some reason. I either have to do a thumnail - or have a direct link.

Penguin, i don't think we really want to see a whole 1620x1208 screen shot anyway :p

You never really know how useful tabbed browsing is gonna be until you've used it.

Yes it will. Open your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and you'll see what applications are prefetched.

Prefetch is a built-in feature of Windows XP, therefore it will work with pretty much everything.

That is because Imageshack automatically thumbnails large images. No one wants to scroll way the hell across the screen to view the text on the screen becaue of an extraneously large image.

Can someone help me here?

I can't see "red crosses" using Firefox, but they appear when using IE.

IE:
ie.jpg

FF:
ff.jpg

And in this case, if I clicked on the red cross, it would actually link me to a valid image...

Any thoughts?

Yeah they don´t show on Firefox here too. But I never try to open the red X´s on IE anyway.

Hum... But at least it would be nice to know that someone tried to post a picture. 👎

Anyway, thanks, Felipe.

It means that when you have multiple websites open, you don't have to have your taskbar crowded with a bunch of browser buttons which can get stacked in Windows XP when you've a bunch of programs open. I regularly have several websites open - Google, Gmail, a couple of forums I visit, etc. and it's just far neater and easier using tabbed browsing.

It's much more secure and is far less of a target for viruses/adware/spyware.

It's got a built-in popup blocker (it doesn't catch them all, but it's a hell of a lot better then Internet Exploder).

It's got tabbed browsing (see above).

It's fully compliant with W3C standards. Microsoft deliberately include non-standard HTML tags and CSS styles or don't apply some tags and standards properly. As a result, lazy or incompetent web designers design websites which don't work properly in other browsers. The more people that use Firefox and other W3C compliant browsers, the more pressure will be on Microsft to standardise their browser and quit abusing their near monopoly.

In my experience, Firefox seems to be much more customisable because of the huge range of extensions, skins, etc.

I have a couple of issues with Firefox though - on some forums it gets the graphics a bit screwy, including GTPlanet and some Flash games will only work for me in Internet Exploder. I've also heard it's a bit of a memory hog. Apart from that, it's overall a far superior piece of software than Internet Explorer.

Search for the term/phrase in question and then hit the 'highlight' button in the search toolbar.

Sometimes it shows though, like this:

Don´t ask me why....

No, i deliberately made that image into a thumbnail - if i post it as a full image, i get the stupid little logo that means it's an image, and when i do post, nothing whatsoever appears.

I was using the screenshot as a test btw becuase i was just in a forum showing off my desktop:p

firefox is definitely cool but it does take up alot of ram memory...

one IE window open is like 5k kb, one firefox window can go upto 20k kb... use your task manager!

Anyone know how to back up Firefox's about:config file?

Go to the following folder:

%appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

There should be a folder with a random series of letters there. Mine is "fhbargdc.default", but your's will be different. There should be a file called prefs.js inside that folder. Any changes from the default settings should be stored in this file... I think.

Giancarlo
It also makes bold anything you change.
Yeah I knew that. I wanted to back it up so I could move my prefs to my other computer without having to enter them by hand.

FireFox is alot better then IE.for those that don't want to use FireFox shows there narrow minded and don't want to try anything new or they get it and have problems with it and give up quick.

i wish my job would start using FireFox.i tried to explain to one of the mangers about it..........blank look

also tried to tell a co-worker about it and got the same blank look.
