Hey guys, I work at a metal fab shop and this is something I've been working on for the past month or so.

I am going to get some decals for it as well, to go on the seat risers and maybe a few other pieces. Also going to screw the wheel into the plate rather than use the piece of wood and clamp method i'm temporarily using, and make it so the wires are a bit neater. Just got it powdercoated today at work, what do you guys think?

Looks very tidy and the finish looks great. Question, how are you going to hard mount the wheel considering the DFGT doesn't have screw holes?

Nice job.

Wondering if with a slight alteration to the wheel mount if,

Making the whole rig slide shut.
Pedal box section made out of a smaller gauge to actually slide into the larger box section under the seat for storage purposes.

If you get where I'm coming from.

My Mrs would hit the roof if I came home with that, or any sort of rig.

Coxis, I guess I didn't think that far ahead, hahah. If I have to keep it clamped I will, but I might figure something out using some tech screws or something.

Spagetti, I know exactly what you mean, I would have loved to do something like that but I didn't for two reasons, one being that we only had a limited size of tubing at my job, and none where close enough to fit right inside the other snug, also, this rig is going in our basement that we're working on. I also have a DDR Hard pad that I made years back that's going down there, and we're going to put a bar down there as well. My wife wouldn't let me keep it up here...no way, haha. I've been wanting to make one for a while but we've lived in apartments for so long, my wife told me when we got a house I could make one, and we bought a house about 3 months ago so.. yeah.

That thing almost looks like a car frame. How much does that thing weigh? I hope it aluminum.

Nope, its all steel tubing, solid as a rock, and pretty damn heavy. Put it this way, I have to take it apart to move it, but once I get it where its going, it won't be moving from that spot. (mancave)

If I remember correctly the DFGT clamps are really good.

Possible cut two small lengths of Box section to weld under your mounting plate?

Idea being that the clamps would a
Have a recess to mount to, so if they started to feel loose the wheel wouldn't fall off anyhow.
A bit of foam or rubber between the clamp face and mounting plate wouldn't hurt either.

Just a suggestion.

Thats a great idea, although, welding is a bit out of the question now as its all been powder coated. But we have some extremely strong industrial strenght double stick tape at work that I could perhaps stick some half inch aluminum blocks under it for the clamps to grab onto.

Thats why I asked. That thing must weigh a ton. Sturdy as hell though. BTW Awesome job!!

Are there hard mounting points under the wheelbase. I think so. 6mm I think. That's the G27 anyhow.

Good luck with your project.

:D I can relate. Please update this topic if you find a way to hard mount it and not mess with the wheel casing too much, since I really want to hard mount mine as well and can't think of how to do it without losing my warranty.

I wish you'd have asked BEFORE you built it. Center post wheel support is an epic fail. Everything else, the seat, seat base, frame and especially the craftsmanship looks great.

Scotty

I know some people don't like center post design for various reasons, but how is it an "epic fail" ?

It's not an epic fail, it's just a manner of preference. I myself prefer no center post, there are some that claim that it's unbearable and some that say it's barely noticeable when racing. Plus, more often than not having a center post is less stable than having two lateral posts. It's clear that's not an issue on your rig.

.

Oh, yeah I weighed the pros and cons before I decided on a center post. I needed to keep it simple and had to use what drop we had at work so I decided for a center post. The way I have it mounted though, with a 5/8 slot running the length of 1.5 square tube and two 5/8 holes on center in a 2 inch tube, with nuts welded on and some big beefy bolts going through, into the 5/8 slots so there is no wiggle room, and clamping it down HARD...that post doesn't move. If I really pull it hard left or right it might give about half an inch, but I just got done playing dirt 3 on it with my wheel weight set at 100% and it was solid as a rock. I know for shorter people, the pedals might slam against the post too, but i'm 6'1" so its not in my way at all, and it doesn't even touch the inside of my legs.

I get it though, if I were to buy a rig, I would surely go for a double post rig, but this is just the way I kind of had to make mine, and it worked out great.

It would have been a fail had you bought a PlaySeat. It was epic because of your great effort on a doomed design. I just think it's a design compromise that leaves the cockpit ergonomically lacking. What's a cockpit for if not to replicate the ergonomics a car ? That's just my thoughts, if I was you I'd ignore me on this one....but you did ask.

Actually you dealt with my main complaint about center posts with the heavy duty construction you employed. I doubt it moves a half inch. 👍

I've broke the clamps on one of my wheel already.

Nice Rig.

Nice work mate 👍

Good to see another metal-worker knocking up a rig :) Nice touch with the powder-coating too; I also went with that (check my sig for a link).

Well done.

Hey, that's a passenger seat. Is it B-Spec only ? JK

Scotty

HAH, what's funny is I actually came across a guy who had the matching drivers seat from the same car out of the same junk yard, using it on his rig.

Its really nice congrats.
With a brake and a gas pedal only the center post is no fail at all... now if your pedal set had a clutch, a center brake pedal and a gas pedal it would get a bit in the way... but you will probably be able to modify it if you upgrade your wheel

Thank you, I figure once I do upgrade to pedals that use a clutch, I will see how it feels, and if I get the urge, I can just make the simple dual post frame at work and attach it, when the ol' scrap pile fills back up, hahaha.

EDIT: My DFGT left side clamp just broke, the little hook came out and the threaded bit was in 3 pieces... I need to figure out how to hard mount it.

A while ago I opened my DFP and found two screw threads where the plastic clamp 'screws' sit, as in the metal plates they rest on have screw threads in the middle of them. If you were willing to drill holes in the case you could use those, if the DFGT still has them, they're threaded for M4 screws. Hang on a minute and I'll upload a photo.

Here you go:

That small hole in the middle of the silver plate under the screw is the threaded one, but as I said, the DFGT might not have them.
