Ok, I bought a used PS2 from my friend. It has one controller and a LAN adapter. I have GT4 and it runs great. (Just need to buy a memory card and I'll be all set.)
Now for the question:
When I remove the LAN adapter I see an IDE port and a drive power connector on it. There is a drive bay in the machine. Is the PS2 compatable with HDs? What if I plug one in?

There's going to be a big BOOOM... No seriously, the HD is probably going to work, but it needs to be format and I think the PS2 got to be chipped or something.

The useful thing of a HD is that you can add your games into it and they load faster than the cds. :)

Why shouldn't you be able to play GT4 in HD from the harddisk? I can...

Anyway ... yes, you can plug a standard IDE harddisk in there. Your PS2 doesn't need to be modified or anything, you just need a software that will format and access the disk, such as this.

Hey I'm curious, what is the average storage size a PS2 game takes ??? Because I'm thinking about getting a HD myself :)

GT4 is the biggest I've seen so far with 6 GB, other games usually are somewhere betreen 1 and 3 GB.

So a 20GB would hold like 5 games ??? Sounds fair to me :)

I only got 4 games I play (GT4, SCCT, NHL06, GTASA).

I definitly got to check to that ;)

I actually just picked up HDA (see link above) on Monday. The minimum HD size supported is 40GB. I have a 160 connected and so far everything is working perfect (so far 11 games loaded). There are a few issues with some games, but about 95% work off of the HD, including GT4, TT, and GTA.

Can I use it to save memory cards?
Not that I am aware of. You can pick up a max drive to put the info on a computer, though.

Ok well, a 40GB... It just cost like 2-3 bucks more... lol

You can save data from games (like on memory card) with the official PS2 HDD but it's not on sale anymore.

You actually can exchange data between your MemCard and your hdd with a software called "Memory Card Manager". For this however, you've got to get at least a bit into how this all works, because you can't just run every program off the hdd.

If you're lucky enough to find the FFXI combo it is. But that is a rare find.

Agree. Anyway, the network adapter's not on sale anymore either so I'm gonna have to surf EB Games or some gaming forums to buy a used one.

or Ebay.

Hey, can I put my photomode pics on there just like the memory card?
You mean on the harddrive, right? Hmmm, good question. I guess you can, but you can't access them from there, cause GT4 does not officially support hdd access. And you shouldn't save Photomode pics on the MemCard anyway, as they are being reduced in quality automatially. Use a USB storage device instead.

Ay, no wonder my pics look kinda crappy on my computer when I transfer 'em over!

Are there any USB HDs compatable?

i use my dv cam as a small hardrive to put my pics on my computer and the quality is great.

I plan on getting a flip top and a hdd loader so i can play burned games and imported games.
