Just how many Skylines and Mazda roadsters do we need?

I don't see any problem with all the skylines and stuff, just they shouldn't count it as 1000 cars, same with RM it's the same car. If I made the game I'd just have one base model for each car, that can be modified into any variation of the car. They are missing a few skylines too it's just the ones they would have to do more work to include, like the 4 doors.
Some people seem to think that their car is missing from the game because of skylines and roadsters, but it has nothing to do with it.
Also where's the cefiros? Cefiro is far more common than the skyline, I've seen them all over Asia.

I have a Japanese friend who was a semi-professional racer, and we have always had fun playing racing games (be it Forza or GT). When I showed him GT's enormous car list, he was impressed by the number but thought that Kazunori was "lazy" to put out so many reiteration of the same models with minimal or simple livery changes. He thought that was a pretty cheap way to boost up the car count.

I'd have to agree. As much as I enjoy the game, the numerous Mazdas and Skylines (not to mention the different livery SuperGTs and Nascars) are a disappointment.

This game is marketed as having over 1000 cars, when really its like 800, plus 200 duplicate Skylines and Miatas.

The advert does not say: "1000 cars, all of which are very distinctive and different, which are equally 33% Japanese, 33% European and 33% American"

Marketing/advertisements are always designed to fool you. Better to know that sooner than later.

@ Luminis: The basis 240Z of your link is in the game, but that "Battle S30Z" is awsome.

But I can live with the amount of models.
I rather have 100 Skylines then only 5 and no other 95cars. Because there is no replacement for it (and if you are aware of that it is easy to life with the "Skyline/MX5/RX7-Situation).

If PD would have replacements they would be in the Game ;)

Before asking why have these cars, try asking why not have them?
Because an awfully pathetic number of the duplicate cars are modeled incorrectly compared to how they are in real life, which brings the quality of the game down. It does make the game look bad when you see a car labeled as a Lexus GS300 and it doesn't have remotely correct specifications or performance, simply because PD were so lazy in padding the car count that they wouldn't even change the specifications table.
Treating those cars as separate models in the game car count, while shifty, isn't that much of a problem if care was made to make sure they were done properly. For example, USDM versions of JDM cars usually aren't identical in construction to the JDM version. But with the exception of the Acuras and Inifinitis, GT5 treats all non-JDM cars as being identical to JDM versions.

So, yes, if PD were to remove the duplicates the game would be much better. Not only would the car count be more honest, but the consistency in quality for the cars would be drastically increased.

It really does not take much to take a GTR and turn it into a GTR Nur, or a GTR M or whatever. Once you have a base model car done, which can take months of work, you can have another 10 variants done in a day or two. A small texture change here, a slight change of stats in a database and you are done.
That isn't the problem that GT5 suffers from. You are describing something else entirely, in fact. Making model variations is a perfectly acceptable thing to do, so long as care is made to make sure they are accurate. This is why GT4 didn't actually have that many car duplicates (because, outside of JGTC cars, there were only truly a couple of them), but GT5 has what is likely well over 100 of them.

But why only do that with Skylines and Miatas? They could have easily taken (-for example-) the BMW 330i and turn it into a 335d, 325Xi and 335i to give you an example. All have quite different drivetrains and engine characteristics within the same body. But somehow a Miata with a different kind of leather upholstery is important enough to warrant a separate car in the list?

I don't buy it. Literally :)

What's worse than all the skylines, is the cars like the Lexus IS 200 and Nissan 180sx, because they just renamed them for different markets and used the exact same car model, even though the Japanese model was never released in other countries. For example, I saw a 240sx with SR20DET that was never released in the US and with the body style from a Japanese model that was never released in the US too.

They are missing quite a few miatas that I personally would love in the game. Mazdaspeed, nb coupe, 10ae, prht nc miata just to name a few.

where exactly does it state how long it took PD to model these cars?

Are the numbers spouted just guesses??
The math dictates that to model 200 premiums in 6 years gives 2.75 months per car. I highly doubt that PD was modeling up til release day. That makes the numbers stated here just complete gibberish.
Kaz has said that the inclusion/exclusion of the cars in the game are due to licensing. It would not suprise me in the least if PD was required to purchase licenses per model. Or possibly per volume. ie... Miata, Suzuki, skyline all had to be licensed seperately so using that lisence to make many variations makes sense.

Or perhaps Mazda licensed say 25 cars total. Being that there are not really that many notable Mazda's out there making variations makes sense in order to use up the license quota.

Even most frustrating is the fact that most "duplicates" do not even have leather upholstery differences.

They are completely IDENTICAL except for the year label of the car and the colour which you can always change in GT auto anyway.
