I've always liked Volvos... One of my first words was Volvo

But if I was to give reasons to my madness I would probably say that Volvo in the past have set many new standards interms of car safety and have always been very distinctive. Volvos are well built and if cared for last forever, the Turbo models are faster than most people imagine, I like the 740 onwards interiors too (not too keen on the 240s). The 850s engine sounds fantastic too :) Volvo had the guts to enter an Estate in the BTCC... But as you might have gathered I like nearly every aspect  except the base models are underpowered and all of them are a bit thirsty.

I'm also unsure whether I like the newer models, Volvo might now be more attractive to the general public but I'm afraid there losing there distinctiveness and they are becoming Fords... Anyone else notice how 'safety concious' the Ford adverts have been since the takeover of Volvo? ;)

I disagree - if you want to see a company that's losing its distinctiveness, look no further than Saab.

Volvo's keeping its traditions - Ford's doing a great job managing Volvo, Land Rover, and Aston-Martin. The problem is they can't seem to keep Lincoln and Mercury in the same order...

I guess you could say I'm a bit of a volvo fan :D

PuTTe_TuTTe, you should join the Volvo Club. The link is in my sig.

Anyway, here is the latest volvo in my family (my moms):

Volvo Sugga

It's my favorate. :D
This page has many good images. I wish I could read all that (I think it's Finnish?).

The 780 is also pretty cool:

Edit: new Sugga image, the last one broke.

I own a 1988 740 Turbo Intercooler. Honestly, I prefer turbo Volvos because they are the ultimate "sleeper" cars, but any Volvo will do just fine (except the new V8 XC90 which I hope becomes a marketing flop).

Turbo Volvos are safe, fun to drive, unassuming, cheap to insure, cheap to operate (except when it comes to the business of refueling as you MUST use premium fuel), and in wagon form, quite capacious.

Thats true, I think the bigger Saabs now use Opel/Vauxhall Vectra (And probably some cars in the US) chassis and of course the Saabaru.

Volvos keeping its traditions in some ways, but the Ford Focus chassis in the S40s and new C70 don't exactly fill me with confidence even if it is supposed to be good. Yes Volvos always had the less 'Volvo-like' smaller cars, but I'm afraid it might spread into the bigger cars. I'm not that up too date on the newer Volvos but it doesn't seem to me Volvo is quite the frontrunner in terms of safety it once was. Companies such as Renault are doing well in the safety department, although personally I'd still feel safer in a Volvo

I'd love a 780, but being left hand drive would be a bit of a pain for overtaking. Hmm maybe set up a series of mirrors that face forwards ;)

now I'm a member of the coolest club ever ;)

Volvo 240 is a very popular drift car in Sweden ;)

 hehe... sorry for just posting 240 pics but i cant get enough! will try to find some cool volvo ''action'' pics later though

this is pretty cool 240 turbo i think, 500+hp  ´

I finally had my boost controller and aftermarket boost gauge installed today on my 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo. Stock was a little over 7 psi of boost and it's now maxed out at about 9 psi (maybe a bit more, but definitely less than 10 psi). I want 13 psi total -- I'll have to make the necessary adjustments tomorrow.

Thanks! Actually, I see a lot of Volvos in New York. On my block alone there are at least 4 (including mine). I have yet to see, in person, a tuned Volvo except for a 2000 or 2001 Volvo S40 with a modified turbo wastegate that allowed for increased boost pressure.

niiiice 👍

My 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo wagon (with aftermarket boost gauge and boost controller) hit a maximum 16 psi of boost (stock = 7 psi)! :scared: I hope I didn't break anything...:dopey:

Well you should probably start saving for when you do need a new turbo  Not sure how much difference turning up the boost will make but I'd imagine it would make a sizeable difference. I think the general rule of thumb for the high pressure turbos is as standard they last about 150,000 miles whereas the low pressures may last up to 300,000. Obviously these are based on general driving and are purely figures I've collated in my head, although the low pressure one is probably wrong as I was more concerned about the HPTs! ;)

So yours might only last 70,000 miles, although to be fair with that much boost increase, that would be good going.

The turbo in my car has been replaced and is only 2 years old (~8k miles). I'm not sure if the older Volvos made a distinction between low pressure and high pressure turbos like they do now. I guess it would be considered a high pressure turbo because the Turbo plus kits available for the 700 series turbos increased boost up to around 10 psi of boost (from the factory!). So although 16 is a bit high, lately it has been maxing out at 13-14 psi. Since I only drive about 10,000 miles per year, even if the turbo will last another 60,000 miles that still equates to 6 years -- I probably won't have the car in 6 years time. :dopey:

PuTTe. The S60R is just fast:p i like it because its 4WD powerful etc. But, the C70 is thee best.

Yep I think all of the turbos in the 700s were high pressure (although maybe not for the diesel, I don't know or care!). It was only really the 900s onwards that had low/high pressure turbos. And yeah if it did last 6 years, I wouldn't complain :)

Exactly. That's why the early 700s with the Garrett turbo had massive turbo lag (but could handle tons of boost), the mid-to-late 700s with the Mitsubishi turbo had some turbo lag (and could handle a decent amount of boost), and the 900s with the "tiny" Mitsubishi turbo had very little turbo lag (but probably couldn't handle too much boost.

And yeah if it did last 6 years, I wouldn't complain :)

:) Precisely. Actually, now the car is running closer to 13 psi max... the 16 psi was a one-time event. :indiff: Oh well -- it's still very quick! :dopey:

I like Volvo because they're so utilitarian and unpretencious. They make no bones about being safe and a little bit sensible.

And as T5R's signature says "Volvo, what other car can you overtake a Porsche with a Wardrobe in the back?"

Although, granted the Volvo would become unstuck in the twisty bits :)
